I received this as a sample with my first RiverTea order. I’ve had two cups so far, with a third remaining in the bag, so a pretty generous sample! I did actually think about adding 50g of this to my order, but I decided against it at last minute. Based on the sample, that was probably the right decision for me. It’s nice, but it’s not quite as punchy as I’d hoped.

The dry leaf contains huge pieces of cinnamon stick, and equally huge whole chamomile blossoms. The chamomile blossom actually unfurled while brewing, and it was pretty to watch all of the petals folding back. I was slightly concerned that the cinnamon would overpower everything else, but it didn’t. I gave 1 tsp of leaf approximately three minutes in boiling water and added a splash of milk.

First sip didn’t taste of much to me — the honey-like sweetness of chamomile, a swirl of spice, generic black tea. I left it to cool a while, and when I returned to it the flavours I was looking for really came through. There’s definitely mango, and there’s also quite a lot of banana. I wasn’t expecting to be able to taste the banana at all, so it was a pleasant surprise! The vanilla adds a touch of creaminess and a sweetness to the overall cup, but it’s very much a background flavour. There’s a lot going on in terms of flavour…maybe a little too much at times. I do wish the mango was a little stronger and jucier, but it’s a pretty nice cup as it stands. I’m definitely glad to have had the opportunity to try it! A good first experience with RiverTea — on the strength of this one alone I’m looking forward to trying the rest of my order!

TheTeaFairy sent me a sample of this one and I have to say I was quite skeptical. Giant pieces of Cinammon sticks in there, and then I read about chamomile which I most definitely do not enjoy. But made it anyway because there’s talk of mango and vanilla and there is dry fruit throughout the leaf.

Hot it was a little strong. Not astringent so much as just strong base. Just as I finished making the tea the people here wanted to go for a walk (I’m at the cottage) and I left the mason jar on the table. Had it upon my return, cooled off, and it is much more fruity than when piping hot. I cannot really distinguish the different fruit but it was ok. I probably wouldn’t buy it but it was enjoyable. I have 1 tsp left that I considered cold brewing but I am not sure I want to bother for just 250 ml. Thanks, TheTeaFairy , thanks very much. My first RiverTea

Dunno, not sure but I don’t think I’m a fan of this either…

I’ve found that of the River Teas I’ve tried, they all sound lovely in theory but they haven’t really rung my bell. Not that there’s anything bad with their blending – just that the flavours aren’t working for me. I think the only one of theirs I really would consider restocking is their Crazy Mint.

I finally got to try the sample of it a few days ago. Perhaps I overleafed it, as it came out really strong and with not much detectable flavor to it other than the stroooong base tea. I mean, I could definitely notice some hint of fruitiness but it was mostly “unidentified tropical flavors” with no complexity to them.

I think I should have been more careful steeping this one because I feel like it was mainly my fault this tea didn’t come out right. And that’s why I am not rating it.

I think part of the problem with this is the add-ins are REALLY big. I had a few big chunks of cinnamon stick in mine which meant some cups had OMG!Cinnamon and others had none at all. Hopefully they get better at decreasing the add-in sizes as they go as that is the only complaint I have with Rivertea.

Kat_Maria

Yeah, I see what you mean. I think there’s a preconception that the bigger the chunks the better the tea. And it sure looks cute. But that doesn’t necessarily translate well to the overall steep. Bigger is not always better :D

Roswell Strange

I got 50g of it in my freebie RiverTea pack and I agree about the large chunks – but after parceling samples out to the people who wanted to try it, I just went through and broke all the chunks into smaller pieces so they could be better dispersed. This really holds its own a cold brew though; perhaps because using more leaf lets you get more chunk variety in there.

Kat_Maria

Roswell Strange, that definitely makes sense about the cold brew! Hopefully one day I will get to try this again because the description sounds like this has the potential of being delicious.

It’s not as good as Dolce Vita though.

Just finished this tea today and sadly, dropped my rating a bit.
It’s a good tea, but it’s inconsistent. The flavouring chunks are so big they don’t disperse evenly so some cups are amazeballs and others are just ok.

lovely use of the word “amazeballs” ;)

juliebeth

amazeballs. :)
