From Rishi Tea

Ingredients: Organic pu-erh tea, organic hibiscus flowers, organic orange peel, essential orange, grapefruit, and blood orange oils.

Pu-erh Blood Orange- Based on an ancient and popular digestive tonic of Pu-erh aged with citrus and Asian grapefruit, we put together this succulent and soothing blend of blood orange and organic roots, fruits and spices. This has a heavy body, sweet and tart flavor with a crisp and refreshing citrus bite. The aroma and flavor of blood orange and grapefruit are in perfect balance with the rich-bodied Pu-erh.

I ordered a nice little package of this in my most recent shipment from Rishi. Although I like pu-erh a lot, I also like it mixed with other things sometimes.

I was a little worried about this because there is hibiscus in it. It seems Rishi is mad for hibiscus since it finds its way into so many of their blends.

This is VERY citrusy. When you open the bag it practically knocks you down with an intense fruit smell. I liked this, a lot. Mostly the flavor is of orange and grapefruit so it’s kinda hard to taste the pu-erh in here. I believe the pu-erh is grounding the tartness of the citrus with some earthy dark flavors, kind of like orange chocolate. I am finding it refreshing and delicious.

This is an organic and fair trade tea which is also a plus as far as I am concerned. I only wish I had purchased a bigger bag!

Would you think less of me if I confessed to you that I’m pu-erh shy? Would this one be a good pu-erh to get me started?

TeaBrat

@Jenn, the orange here very much obliterated the pu-erh. I have some of these little guys which are mild. I’ll send you one. http://www.rishi-tea.com/store/ancient-shu-pu-erh-tuo-cha-organic-fair-trade-pu-erh-tea.html

Not sure why, but I can taste more pu-erh in this today than I could before. The scent of the dry leaves it still to die for; I had planned to drink another black tea once I got to work, but I opened my bag and the smell of this screamed “drink me!” I like that the citrus is a bit more muted this time.

Haha, exact same thing happened to me with my Vanilla Mint Pu-erh. The first day it was incredibly minty / sweet. A few days later I was craving it for some reason and I was hit with pu-erh instead.

Still scares me…

Wow. I didn’t think I’d drink up this sample so fast. Apparently I liked it more than I thought. I still want more orange from the tea, but it’s a nice blend with the pu-erh. :)

Pu-erh with orange in it is just SO addicting! I don’t know how I even managed to function before I tried it…

TeaBrat

wow I thought it was mostly orange and no pu-erh – amazing how people’s tastebuds can be so different!

Before sipping, I noticed that this tea smells like a decaying and possibly haunted house.

I guess that’s the pu’erh?

The taste is very strongly orange rind. It’s like very citrusy & acidic. If you miss halftime orange slices at childhood sports events, this will take you there.

This tea is o-kay, but it’s a bit one-dimensional. Aaaaaaaand it makes my burps taste like orange rind. So there’s that.

I’ll have to revisit this one. I do remember it being very orange-y. I don’t remember the haunted house. Maybe they crammed a dead orange in the flavor essence and now it haunts the tea. Like, “Ooooorange yoooouu pithed oooffff that yoooou triiieedd thiiss? Looook ooouuut. I’m riiiight be-riiind yooou.”

Super Starling!

Oh my god I am dying right now at this comment.

The smooth, rich and nuanced flavor of shu pu-erh is balanced with fruity and tart hibiscus, sweet orange peel, and a refreshing array of citrus to produce a unique and refreshing pu-erh tea.
