Youle Ancient Tree Pu-erh Tea Cake (国艳攸乐古树青饼珍藏品)

Mengyang Guoyan Tea Factory is not our favorite tea maker anymore (another one, Mengku Tea Factory is off our radar also, ever since I learnt they ‘baked’, not sun-dried the tea leaves for many of their massive production), but some of their offerings are still pretty good.

Guoyan Tea factory sits in Mengyang county, Jinghong, it is near the Youle tea area. We consider that this tea cake is a very good representative of Youle teas, and it was made prior to 2007, a time every tea makers went nuts, so as to have made some questionable products. Since this one was made in 2006, you bet it was good when Ms. Dong Guoyan was trying to make a name for herself, and good raw materials were still abundant.

This tea as part of a one brew sized sample does not come off as too impressive at the moment. It is not bitter or harsh to say but it comes off as tasting a bit flat. I’m do not know enough about sheng puerh to know if this is the normal awkward stage between young sheng and aged sheng where it needs to be set aside to age more or if it is just a bad tea that sat around for 6 years.

Have you tried any of the puerhs from Mandala tea? i like their offerings…

John Grebe

Amy I never ordered from Mandala tea, this was a free sample from Puerh Shop. I have looked over Mandala tea’s puerh selection and I might place an order from them in the future but I just placed a large puerh order with Puerh Shop so I will not be needing any more puerh for some time.
