Numi changed the name of this tea what looks like a bit of a long time ago. You can get like 100 of the bags with the old Ginger Sun name for $20 on their site! But ehhhh.

I’m not a fan of decaf greens at all. They just have that off taste no matter what other strong flavors are in there. I also added some honey to try to cover it, but it did not do that. It’s not even very strongly flavored, I was hoping for a bit more of a lemon taste with lemongrass and lemon in here.

Feeling 0/2 on this box so far.

I’ve been over caffeinating myself with all this wonderful tea, so I thought I’d seek out a good decaf and maybe sleep a little better at night — so I could wake up refreshed and ready to drink more wonderful tea! This is my second decaf attempt and neither has been what I’d call overly successful. The results have been choices that are serviceable but not very inspiring.

This one has ingredients similar to the Tazo Green Ginger, of which I’m not much of a fan, minus the pear. (Green Ginger has lemongrass in it, though it doesn’t claim a lemon flavor in its description of itself.) I like Ginger Sun better than Green Ginger, mostly because the ginger is milder and tastes more natural to me in Ginger Sun. There’s more sense of balance to it as well, though the green tea is a shadow of itself compared to some other Numi green bagged teas I have tried. You can tell it has been de- somethinged, which is my basic beef with most decaf’d drinks.

So the search continues.

Do you not care for rooibos or honeybush? They’re naturally caffeine free. I know because, like you, I am trying to compile a list of decaf or caffeine-free tea since I seem to have some sensitivity to caffeine impeding sleep time.

I do like them, though sometimes they’re a little too sweet for what I’m thirsty for, so I am going for a variety of options. :-)

So far, rooibos & honeybush are pretty much my only caf-free staples (other than some herbals like lemongrass), so I can’t wait for your posts & suggestions on other decaf/caf-free teas!

I approach decaf teas warily, after reading so many less than stellar reviews here of both black and green decafs. Sometimes I don’t want the caffeine though, so besides having a stash of rooibos on the side for such occasions, I’m also on the lookout for a green or black decaf that can win me over. I picked up this bag as a sample recently, so it’s time to give it a try.

The scent from this bag is moderately strong, and features a little bit more lemon than ginger. As it steeps I can see the quite small chunks of ginger floating around with the other ingredients in the bag, but am still getting only a light scent from the cup. In three minutes I’ve got a medium-hued yellow-green liquor. One sip tells me to put the bag back in for another minute, as there’s not a whole lot of flavor there yet.

I’m taking it out after four minutes to avoid bitterness from the green tea. I can’t call this one a super successful blend for my taste – I can get the lemongrass and a light background wash of ginger, along with just a bit of astringency from the green tea, but it’s not really working well together for me. It’s just a tad too medicinal tasting and does not offer the kind of rich flavor I’m looking for.

Not a bad tea, but not great either. It had the grassy taste of green tea, but some sugar and a teaspoon of acacia honey brought out the lemongrass and ginger flavors. The lemon was the stronger flavor of the two; the ginger lurked in the background, so I added a pinch of ground ginger, which I felt improved the tea and balanced the flavors. I just don’t feel that a tea should need this much doctoring to taste good. It did feel good, however, on my throat, which is still hoarse from a cold.

(Note, my tea bag just says “Ginger Lemon Decaf Green” – no “sun”)
Tea bags of this one were in the freebie bin at Whole Foods, so I thought “what the heck”. I often like a little ginger tea after eating, and this is decaf so a good choice for after-dinner. This one won’t disappoint ginger lovers, as it has a really nice bite to it. It honestly reminds me of a tisane though, because the green tea can’t hold up to the ginger taste (still, nice to have it there for the health benefits). If there’s lemon in here, the ginger scared it away.

Ho-hum. Unfortunately, this tea just isn’t very exciting.

As it cools I can taste the green a little bit, but it’s still mostly ginger.

If this were offered to me at a hotel breakfast, or among the teas at a meeting I’d be thrilled, but I’m not so interested by this as to buy a box.

Bought this on sale at the grocery store and keep it at the office where tea bags are much more convenient. I keep the brew time on this moderate and drink it warm. It has a strong flavor of ginger and lemon, which I like. The decaf green tea, while not astringent, is sort of bitter. The good is that all the flavoring is authentic and not artificial tasting. The aftertaste is brisk and clean with no off-taste. It would probably make a refreshing iced tea. It’s not a favorite though. I’d like to cut back on caffeine, but I really prefer the taste of non-decaffeinated teas.

Got this in the library today. It wasn’t too bad. It was a little like the loose leaf tea I had had earlier in the day, but with more ginger. It was kind of nice in that respect, but I couldn’t really taste too much of the tea, or the lemon. It would have added a lot more depth to the tea if those flavors were present, but it wasn’t the worst thing I could have had at the time.

I don’t usually choose decafe teas, but since this was what the multi-pack offered, this is what I chose. All I can say is, WOW! I like Green teas, but I’ve never tasted one with this much zing! Even without the caffeine, I found this to be a refreshing and invigorating tea! As usual, just a bit of sugar to sweeten (though, perhaps I should look into this “Truvia” stuff). The ginger is very apparent in this tea, which is where I suspect I’m getting that delightful kick from. And The undertones of the lemongrass add a certain I don’t know what, but it’s a good thing. I will certainly have to look for this one in the grocery. This is another illustration as to why I love sample packages of tea. Absolute win!

Up date (1/18/2011): So I looked into that Truvia stuff. It’s rubbish. I’m donating it to the teachers lounge at the elementary school my mother works at. Hope they can enjoy it.

Backlogging:

When I was making a cup of English Breakfast my boy decided to make himself a cup of this. I had a few mouthfuls and it wasn’t that bad. It didn’t taste as strong as it could have because he had a big glass of water for one little teabag. This was my first time tasting ginger tea so I’m surprised that the ginger wasn’t that strong.

I’m not sure what my impression is on this one. I would try it again but I would want to make it over at my house where I don’t have to use water from an instant coffee maker.
