1 Tasting Note View all

“Another day, another tasting. I opened this bag planning to enjoy a rich floral sweetness like the 2009 spring version I’d bought before, and this didn’t disappoint. It might not be quite as rich...” Read full tasting note

Description

The name of this particular tea cultivar is Huang Jin Gui, which roughly translates to “Royal Golden Turtle,” although many people refer to this particular tea varietal as “Golden Osmanthus” in English. It is one of the “Se Zhong” category of oolong varietals that have their origins in Fujian’s Anxi county, including the culivars/varietals known as Tie Guan Yin, Mao Xie, Ben Shan etc.

Huang Jin Gui has a distinctive smoothness and a slightly nutty or perhaps buttery element to the aftertaste. It possesses lovely & distinct floral overtones, but this tea is less overtly “Lilac-flowery” & bittersweet than the high grade Tie Guan Yin oolong that we offer. Huang Jin Gui is a great value green-style oolong tea because it is not as well known as Tie Guan Yin. In other words, the quality is very high while the price stays low because it is less in demand than Tie Guan Yin, which is the most famous of the Anxi “Se Zhong” oolong varietals.
