From Nina's Paris

The smoothness of Keemun together with the freshness of bergamot. An ancient recipe that was handed down by a high dignitary of China to Earl Charles Grey. A classic that definitely shouldn’t be missed.

Thank you Laurent for sending me samples to try!

This is a SOLID earl grey if you are looking for a good one. The black base is bold, but smooth and not astringent. The bergamot is adequately citrusy but not bitter. I am drinking it straight but I imagine it would take cream and sugar very well. Another well balanced blend from Nina’s!

The smell of the dry tea had me a bit nervous because I didn’t really smell any bergamot. It smelled much more like Eve by Nina’s Paris.

The brewed tea smelled of delicious malty keemun. The tea taste like smooth malty keemun with a very light bergamot flavour. It tastes like a medium strength black tea. There is also an orange citrus flavour, and a slight natural sweetness to the tea. It tastes like there is a mild fruit flavour underneath the base of the tea.

The is not a bergamot-lovers Earl Grey, but it is a very smooth and delicate Earl Grey. Very delicious. I recommend to anyone unsure of Earl Grey as the bergamot is not too scary.

Got this free when I bought a tea and had tea at Nina’s in Paris. We did a day trip, one day to to roam the city and another for Disneyland Paris. It was a great experience and I would recommend it. We got to try the cake Marie Antoinette ate and they had some replicas of her shoes and nice portraits. Overall its a decent Earl Grey. I enjoyed it. Not my fave but top three.

This tea used to be my absolute favorite Earl Grey when they used a Keemun base. It was exquisite. Then they switched to Ceylon. sobs

Roxy King

Ooh that sounds better for sure! I wonder if thats why they were giving it away, they gave a tin to everyone that bought tea or sat in. Ill have to keep my eye out for an Earl Grey with Keemum.

ashmanra

Fortnum & Mason uses Keemun for their base. I think there are some other companies that do as well, but I can’t recall which ones right off hand!

Roxy King

Thank you! I will definitely be on the lookout since it’s one of my faves :)

Backlog:

The bergamot aroma was very faint and I found that to be a tad disappointing because that’s one of the things that I love about Earl Grey … that immediate recognition of the strong bergamot aroma.

Fortunately, the bergamot is present in the taste! And this is a really, really good Earl Grey!

I love the Keemun base. Strong black tea with a zesty bergamot flavor shining through. I love the way the wine-like notes meld with the bergamot.

A top-notch Earl Grey. Read more about my tasting of this tea here: http://sororiteasisters.com/2014/07/23/earl-grey-black-tea-from-ninas-paris/

Sipdown (110)!

Well, finished this one off. I have to say, this wasn’t the best cup to end on but it’s totally my fault. I was steeping it alongside two herbals, and because of that I got sloppy with the steep time and this oversteeped. As a result, it was fairly astringent and bitter – though I felt that was less exaggerated as it cooled so I was able to actually finish the cup. It’s a shame, though.

And now I’ve got this super cute, teeny tiny little lime green Nina’s Paris tin since VariaTEA was so generous and sent this to me in the tin. I cleaned out the tin, but I’m not sure what I should be putting inside of it. It doesn’t have the room for anything in large quantity, but it feels like it’d be a waste to just shove it back in the closet and forget about it, or just keep it on display in the living room with nothing in it.

Tins are meant to hold things!

ashmanra

Green? I have pink and red but no green! Cool!

VariaTEA

Aww, their tins are really cute so I agree it should be used. Maybe put teas you want to sip down into it because you might be more inclined to reach for a not-so-exciting blend if it is in a fun little green tin.

Thank you Laurent for this sample! This unfortunately isn’t the Earl Grey for me. I love a lot of bergamot and I found this tea was black tea with hint of bergamot.. Out of curiosity I tasted it hot and then let it cool down and tried it iced. Not bad either way but not a full blown Earl Grey.

I was contacted by Dorian Roque Community Manager and Business Developer at Nina’s Paris USA and was sent two shipments of samples one from Dorian and another from Laurent Caravel who runs the online stores for the US Market.

Nina’s Teas USA description of their Earl Grey: Bergamot from Sicily. The smoothness of Keemun together with the freshness of bergamot. An ancient recipe that was handed down by a high dignitary of China to Earl Charles Grey. A classic that definitely shouldn’t be missed.

“Nina’s began in 1672 when Pierre Diaz created ‘La Distillerie Frères’. It was the first company to distill lavender essential oils in France and became renowned for their art of creating fragrances.” Today they follow the traditions handed down from Diaz to create flavored teas. “Nina’s company name is in homage to Mrs. Nina Diaz, a strong and passionate woman who loved roses.”

Although they have nearly 350 years in the European market, Nina’s Paris Tea is still relatively new on the American market. Currently you can visit Nina’s Paris Tea Store, 4582 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami Design District. The online options are Amazon and Nina’s Etsy store. You should also check out their Facebook page for specials and the latest news from Paris.

Ninas Paris Tea Earl Grey is black tea scented with bergamot oil that is extracted from a pear-shaped Mediterranean citrus. The tea brews up a deep amber cup with a light citrus flavor and fragrance. The tea leaves in traditional Earl Grey are black teas of Chinese or Indian origin. Nina’s uses the Chinese Keemun (Qimen red tea harvested in Spring 2013) a black Chinese tea with a soft wine/fruit flavor. The choice of using Keemun creates a softer cup of Earl Grey than is expected, but to true tea lovers it isn’t a surprise as Keemun is used as the base for many English Breakfast tea blends. The natural Sicilian Bergamot perks up the deeper notes of the Keemun but not with the powerful punch that bergamot has the reputation. I would actually call this tea, soft.

The tea is good and can take a long brew time and still not get bitter. I brewed one teaspoon of leaves in 6 ounces of water 190-200 degrees Fahrenheit. Nina’s recommends 212 degrees (boiling point). The cup yielded was deep caramel colored, and even at the 3rd brewing still yielded a deep color. On the first sip I was impressed with the clear note of bergamot that lingered on my palate. I actually felt a bit of cooling on the roof of my mouth that I normally associate with a mint tea, but none of the mint flavor. It is my impression that the light fruity flavor of the Keemun is why this blend has a more muted bergamot flavor. I enjoyed 4 separately brewed cups. Each one brewed true to color but the bergamot did soften with each cup. By the 4th cup the bergamot was not present.

All-in-all I would highly recommend this tea. However, if you are looking for a bergamot that stands up and announces itself, then this tea will not fit the bill. Nina’s Paris, Earl Grey is an excellent cup of softer bergamot that is flavorful and good at all temperatures, even as we do down South, on ice.

This was another sample from Sil.
I don’t have much to say about it. It’s a nice EG, without too much “blergamot” and I liked it.

Sil

:) technically that’s one of your teas from our order haha i randomyl divided them up after giving you that one as the extra one

It looks like they were really generous with the samples. I was smelling them as I added everything to my cupboard and it got me planning future orders.

AHAHAHAHAH. Like I need to think about FUTURE ORDERS yet!

I received a sample of this in my swap with Marcel Duchamp. Thank you!

This to me tasted like a Ceylon. I was actually wondering if this by chance was labeled incorrectly. It was a nice tea base with a fruity honey flavor. I actually added honey to the cup this morning just like I would a cup of Ceylon. This was a nice cup. Thank you!

Thank you Laurent and Sophie for the generous sample. However, I am just not a lover of bergamot and this cup has lots of it. It is smooth and floral but just not for me. Though I can see this being enjoyable for those who like Earl Grey.
