First off, a few things.
One, I love citrus. The colors, the smells, the flavors.
Second, I sweeten my teas. I grew up in the south. Get over it.

This is an orange and grapefruit tea. And, I loved it. I drank the cup very quickly just because I loved tasting it. It is definitely citrus, and almost had a lime flavor to it. Very bright but well balanced. This isn’t bold enough to be a morning tea for me, but I can see it becoming a favorite afternoon tea.

The dry tea scent reminds me of sweet tarts, tart and sugary with that tone that separates them from rockets. Brewed on the other hand this smells like my grapefruit puerh that I got from big-active ( a polish company). It has dry tangy scent from dried orange rind, something that’s a little bit earthy and gamey and a spicy sharp citrus tone underneath. The base tea smells fruity, with malt and biscuit. The fact that I can usually discern the base tea underneath the flavouring is one thing I’ve always appreciated about Nina’s teas.

After a three minute brew, there is a nice balance between the base and the flavouring and the tea is a deep orangey red.

I taste dried grapefruit rind over top a warmer sweeter fruitier tone that ranges towards the red grapefruit flavour mixed with a plum note from the base. A biscuit note from the base binds the fruit note to the malt lying underneath. Despite the citrus tones the tea remains smooth and mellow when steeped around 92°C, with only a mild astringent note. Altogether a pleasant tea that was warmer and richer than I was expecting. Thanks ’Laurent and Nina’s for the sample!

Thank you so much Laurent and Sophie for so graciously sending me samples from Nina’s Paris.

I’ve read such glowing reviews, so I was really excited to get into these!

This cup has definite grapefruit and orange rind components, though neither veers into bitterness or is too bold. There’s almost a spicy peppery element to the cup that I really enjoyed as well. Despite being bright flavors, the overall vibe I get from this is far more mellow, and more for a quiet summer’s night or something — it’s a nice change from a lot of citrus teas out there.

Overall, I’m really thrilled with my first Nina’s sample and really look forward to the other two!

Easter Weekend Sipdown 6/8!

Many thanks to Laurent for including this as a sample with my Nina’s order. This came in a plastic sealed packet with a single teabag inside, which is just perfect for my sipdown purposes.

When I first opened the bag, the strongest smell was of the grapefruit – phew! A minute or so later, it softened so that I could smell the orange as well.

However, when brewed, the base seemed the strongest taste, with the citrus fruits becoming noticeable only at the end of the sip or in the aftertaste. I still haven’t quite figured out the magical steeping parameters for Nina’s Paris teas yet, but I hope I will soon.

I love this one. So incredibly lovely. And I’m having some cantaloupe at my desk, so I’m in heaven. (I made this recipe for cantaloupe salsa and it was delicious: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2009/07/cantaloupe-salsa/)

I didn’t read Dune last night (!!!) but instead watched the season premiere of TeWo… which managed to include a HUGE fanfic trope that I have never seen done in canon before. Bravo, you silly show.

OMGsrsly

“Huge fanfic trope” = … Coffee shop AU? Yeah, I’m hopeful. Probably isn’t gonna happen tho.

oddree

Coffee shop AU! I’d like to see that too. And it actually is WAY more realistic than the one they did… which was SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS that they took a main character and deaged him. Like, kept everyone else the same and just made him a 15 year old with no memory of what had happened since. I was trying to remember if I’d seen that in canon before, and I can’t think of a case. It’s kind of hilarious. And a good way of getting around an unavailable actor, which I’m assuming is why.

OMGsrsly

A main character. I’m gonna assume it wasn’t any of the 16 year olds. ;) Yeah, waking up in a coffee shop AU sounds like it would be way more fun.

OMGsrsly

Possibly a little happier, too!

oddree

Hey, they’re 17 now! Ha. Yeah I’m hoping it’s all AUs and fandom tropes from here on out. This character will wake up a deaged pregnant genderswapped wolf with partial ownership of a coffee shop and secretly tattooed with her true love’s name. The end.

OMGsrsly

YES. Awesome.

Ahhh, today very much feels like spring. I woke up to birds chirping outside and it’s nice and sunny outside. This is a perfect spring-like tea for this beautiful morning. It’s much lighter than I originally thought, which is a good thing. Somehow when I think of citrus fruits (especially grapefruit) I immediately think of a harsh, tart flavor. This is so not that. It’s almost creamy flavored in it’s citrusy softness. Thank you, VariaTEA, for this one!

-Dry blend has medium black tea leaves and twigs with small yellow petals.
-Dry leaves smell lightly citrusy. Tea liquor aroma is of creamy citrus fruits.
-Tea liquor is a clear medium yellow brown color.
-Light sweet orange flavor and finish. Muted citrus grapefruit aftertaste.
-Best with sweetener. Milk optional.
-Good tea. A lightly zesty and almost creamy cup. Very soft citrus flavors of orange and grapefruit.
