So there’s something in this that I just don’t care for. I can’t put my finger on it. It’s also the same flavour I noticed in Butiki’s Raspberry Truffle, and that I think was also in her Rhubarb Vanilla Ale or Ruby Pie. (one of them). It’s dark, a little bitter and … salty, for lack of a better word.
If I can ignore it, this tea is fine. If I can’t, it’s not so great. I’ll resort to a dash of milk then.
Still. I wish I could figure out what it is. Am I just sensitive to some random flavour? :P

This sample was an excellent opportunity to try it out… even though really, I should try everything I’ve purchased! :$
There are a lot of rose petals in this tea, which is what initially turned me off. Having said that, the ingredient listing is fantastic, so I thought I’d try it just to see. Out of the bag it smells strongly of cherry, and a chemical one at that. Aie…
It smells more like black forest cake brewed however, and I’m VERY pleasantly surprised with the taste. Hot, there’s a stronger floral quality to it, and cold it’s more of a cherry cake. With a tiny bit of pure Stevia, this is really quite delicious!
You and your Stevia! Every time I read the name in your tasting notes my tongue shrivels up a little! :) I do wish I could enjoy that sweetener.
I’m nervous about the floral notes on this one, and wondering if I pick out the rose petals, if that will help.
Are you allergic Dustin? If not, I strongly suggest trying pure stevia, which is super-concentrated; I use less than 1/16th of a teaspoon per cup. I also (and hate saying this) suggest non-organic stevia, because the extraction process for organic makes stevia, to me, really bitter. It’s the additives in stevia that make it taste ‘off’, or unlike a normal sweetener. Use it as-is and sparingly, and you’ll think it’s sugar.
Amariel, I hate roses in my tea, and I loved this. The 50g bag of this specific tea that I have has sat for about a month now because of my same fear. Sometimes, it just works.
You know, Amoda didn’t list rose petals in the ingredients. I’m getting to the point where I want to box these companies metaphorical ears.
Most recently I tried the Trader Joe’s stevia. Maybe I have been adding too much, but I seem to remember trying it in canned drinks and not liking the taste then either. I’ll try it again and see if adding only a little changes anything.
Most stevia on the market, including items with stevia already in them, have extra additives to make them equal sugar 1:1. Trader Joe’s is cut with lactose of all things, and I found it ridiculously bitter and unpalatable. This is what I use (again, less than 1/16th of a teaspoon per cup of tea to match 1 tsp of most other sweeteners), and one bag will last me about a year: http://www.nuts.com/cookingbaking/powders/stevia.html The brand of stevia as well as what’s added makes all the difference, I’ve found.. I’ve tried at least eight different brands now.
OMG I know, right? It was listed on the 50g package I bought, and the only way I knew it was in it. Mind you, I could see the petals in the Amoda box, but still. If I had an allergy to them…
I get headaches from rose…so it is an issue.
Oh. Well if I have a reaction to a tea ingredient, picking it out makes zero difference – I still have a reaction. The oils, flavors and smells are already imbued in the tea. I’m avoiding the green in this month’s Amoda box completely and just passing it along for the same reasons, personally.
For me it is the smell. If I can’t smell it, it is ok, but if I can…I need to keep some Tylenol Migraine nearby. I might make it in the morning and if I can’t deal with it, I’ll dump it and get a tea at Starbucks.

I’m not a big fan of maraschino/candied cherries (which are the types of cherries I associate with black forest cake), but I’m not quite sure it tasted like that… anyhow, I’ll have to give it another shot and pay a bit more attention! At the very least, I remember it being ok? Haha.
This was good, a little subtle in terms of not being overly sweet, and I loved the true flavor of the cherry, how it really was the specific cherry in a black forest cake smell. That said, something felt missing. I don’t know what though. I had it last night (I’ve developed a habit of trying new teas at night but not reviewing them until the next day which makes for shoddier notes I reckon but is worth it to be able to focus on reading and Buffy) and I can’t remember if I had any guesses then…perhaps body? Not quite thick or silky enough? Hm. Not sure.
100th Tasting Note!
I had a cup of this yesterday and was a little disappointed. I know I underleafed because I wanted to make sure I got a few cups out of the sample, but the flavour was very weak. I tried it again today and made sure I put in the correct amount of tea, and what a difference! I really enjoyed this. The cherry flavour is stronger than the chocolate but I think that is a good thing. I find cherry teas are fairly uncommon and it was nice to have a cherry black as opposed to a green. I don’t know if I would buy this again, but I might down the road if I’m craving a cherry black.
What’s this? Two days in a row? Don’t expect a sudden Commitment. I still have a blog post to write. When I checked out they had some even tinier sample pouches (2g) for free at the till, so I grabbed this and Chocolate Mint Black.
Smell is that same ovaltine chocolate, with a faint overtone of cherry and rose. Taste is definitely more rose. It’s pretty mild, but it was also a little sample pouch and sometimes those end up being a bit more stale.
Very mild, floral rose with a smooth milk chocolate taste. As I sip it I basically lose any semblance of cherry I thought I’d tasted before.
Whoa. The dry leaf smells just like black cherry soda! Brewed, the scent is a rich, creamy, chocolate with a sheen of Maraschino cherry. But the flavor doesn’t quite live up to the scent. There’s no chocolate! There’s dryness and a heavy mouthfeel, but no particular taste until a lingering Maraschino cherry note comes in at the end. When the tea cools, it just tastes like flat black cherry soda. I have real black cherry soda in the fridge, thank you very much (Dr. Brown’s, of course). Although… maybe this would be a good candidate for a tea soda. Not an impressive showing so far.
dexter sent this one my way…this one was a straight up miss for me. It didn’t remind me of black forest cake or taste even remotely like it. It was just sort of there…hanging out. oh well! can’t win them all and i love trying ALL THE TEAS! except for that blergamot one that james is threatening to make and send me… ick.
