My first pu-ehr experience. I can see now why people describe it as “peaty” or “earthy.” I’m not sure what’s up with the other review – I’m not getting “dull muddiness” at all. It isn’t smoky, though. This tea is more like the smell of dirt after a rainstorm. I’m not sure this will become a favorite, but I probably will come back to it again and I’m glad I tried it!

I read a little to find steeping instructions, but ended up with very conflicting information (15-30 seconds at 95 degrees C vs 2-5 minutes at boiling). So, I just went the easy way – 2 minutes with boiling water. I’d say that worked out pretty well, but I am open to suggestions.

Haha and I do a combo of the 2 methods:) This is what I do:
1g leaf/1oz of water
Boil water and pour it over the leaves and steep for 20 seconds.
Throw out this infusion
Reboil more water and do another 20 sec steep.
This is your 1st drinkable steep.
Continue steeping at 20 sec til you find the flavor too weak for your preferences
Increase steeping by 10 sec and continue steeping til it becomes too weak, then increase to 40 sec… repeat this pattern.

Interesting. So, why throw out the first infusion?

Man, huge disappointment. I used to drink pu’erh very regularly, and tried a few of Upton Tea Import’s versions, all of which I enjoy very much. If I hadn’t double-checked the name on the bag, I would never have known this was pu’erh. It has none of the smokey peatiness/earthiness that I like in Upton’s pu’erhs. It really doesn’t have much tea flavor at all, actually. Just a dull muddiness. Blech. I bought this with a gift certificate at least, and I may throw the rest of it away. Not good at all.
