Wahoo! I’m the first to review this matcha!!
And whew, what a matcha it is. When I opened the package, my head went immediately to CANDY CANES. Yup, that is exactly what it smells like. Then I whipped some up and is it ever strong! I got a small with robust flavouring and basic grade and it is perfect. I did add half a teaspoon of sugar hoping to cut down the intensity and it seems to have done the trick.
Next time, I’ll try distinctive but I suspect that this is only a hair stronger than I’d like, so the lower flavouring level may be too light for my preferences. YUP!! There WILL be a next time. Oh man, I cannot wait to try this in all sorts of ways. Peppermint and strawberry, or caramel, or cheesecake! Or in a latte. Hey maybe I can mix it with chocolate sauce and milk for a low cal minty “hot chocolate”!! better yet, with a dash of vodka on those cold winter nights. (sighs!)
I have a feeling that this will be gone long before Christmas heh :P
Rating: 90 ish
Anyhow, if you want to buy some for yourself, you can get it here: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/peppermint-matcha.html
Oh and do yourself a favour and buy a tin. They are the perfect size!

What a perfect tea to mark my 750th review :D

ashmanra

You could buy a distinctive and mix it with your robust! :)

Indigobloom

Ashmanra, that is a good idea!! thx!

Sil

Mmmmm I wanted this one. We so need to have our matcha party lol

Azzrian

Sounds so good.

LiberTEAS

I was going to suggest what Ashmanra did. That way, you might get the perfect amount of peppermint.

LiberTEAS

OH… and congrats on reaching 750!

Indigobloom

Sil- YES!! are you free next weekend at all?

Indigobloom

Azzrian- it is amazing! a little toothpaste-ish but I actually like that lol

Indigobloom

LiberTeas- I think I’ll try that, or maybe mix it with some regular matcha.
Thanks, I can’t believe I’ve been here that long!

Veronica

Congratulations on 750! That is impressive.

Indigobloom

thanks Veronica!! I dunno why but I assumed I’d tire of it long before now. My obsession has only grown :P

Ninavampi

Indigobloom

Whoa. I’m not sure what flavoring level this is, but I’d bet it’s at least robust. This is so peppermint-y that it burns my nostrils and not in a good way. Oh boy.

First sip is pure liquid peppermint with a weird aftertaste. I know it’s the matcha base trying to come through. But it kind of tastes like strong peppermint followed by earwax. Either earwax or maybe a dandelion. Not entirely pleasant either way.

I suspect it could be great if used in baking. But when it comes to drinking straight matcha, I think I’d enjoy this one more with the delicate flavoring. Thanks to Indigobloom for the sample! This isn’t my cup of tea, but other samples have definitely been winners. :)

Lighter flavouring on the peppermint. Good to know. I am extremely wary around peppermint lately, though.

Indigobloom

LOL earwax and dandelion!
Sorry this didn’t work out. C’est la vie :)

CHAroma

Those were the closest taste profiles I could think of (and yes, I really have eaten earwax and dandelions…can’t say I recommend it, LOL!).

Auggy

Mmmm, earwax! Hehe!

I ordered this as part of the 4 for 3 deal. I love peppermint, however I got it at the flavouring level “There’s matcha in there?” BIG mistake! While it still tastes wonderful, it’s sooo darn peppermint-y it’s like drinking a glass of scotch mints. My husband loves it, I feel like it would make a great addition to a cup of hot chocolate or blended into another flavour. I will definitely order it again, once this runs out, but I’ll ease up on the flavouring.
When I first opened the package I was in love, it was the first one of the order I opened and the one I was most excited about. The smell reminded me of Sunday drives with my late Grandpa. He always had a big bag of peppermints in his car and my cousin and I would eat them as we drove through the city, stopping at yard sales. This was also the first matcha I ever sifted. to me it seemed silly to think that could make a difference. Boy does it! This little baby frothed up like a champ! I made it as a latte and even tried it with a little agave nectar. I will buy again but probably at distinctive level.

I’ve been wanting to explore some of Red Leaf Tea’s different matcha flavors, and decided that peppermint would be a fun one to try. After much deliberation on what level of flavor intensity to get, I settled on the distinct.

Upon opening the package this afternoon, I was bombarded with the intense smell of authentic peppermint. So far so good. I whipped up a hot latte and added some sugar, since I thought the sweetness might brighten up the peppermint.

Wow! This is incredibly silky, decadent, and savory. The peppermint flavoring tastes like liquid candy canes. Seriously, an incredibly yummy treat. I would give this matcha a higher rating, but I am having one slight issue. Although I do absolutely adore peppermint anything, I don’t necessarily love it blended with the matcha here, because of the way it’s affecting the overall flavor. CHAroma likened the matcha taste to that of a dandelion, and I have to agree. Blegh.

This has definitely been a fun tea to try out, but I am slightly disappointed with the peppermint not blending as well as I had imagined. I guess I will just try to incorporate this into some sort of baking project, since I can’t seem to get past drinking a peppermint-dandelion tea. (unless someone wants to try this in a swap, it may taste better blended with another matcha?) Someone please tell me that the rest of Red leaf’s flavored matcha’s aren’t this odd tasting!

thank you VariaTEA i added this to some milk today, since when you’re trying to drink the world, why not throw in some matcha as well lol this one is actually pretty tasty. It’s like liquid candy cane in my cup haha. I’m sort of in the same boat as OMGsrsly – in that i’ve gone off of flavoured matcha. however, since i haven’t had any in a while this was a nice treat :)

VariaTEA

Glad you enjoyed it. It came to me via Roswell Strange :)

And I got it from akgrowngirl :)

The mint is strong with this one! I made a chocolate peppermint smoothie and it is tasty but a touch too minty for my tastes. However the mint is quite cooling and delicious :). It reminds me of the Laura Secord chocolate mints. Yum! Thank you Roswell Strange!

So I finally got around to having this in milk! And to summarize the experience in one word: “nope”.

It was so weird and unpleasant: like if someone had taken a bottle of those pasty mint flavoured Tums and crushed them all up then mixed the chalky slurry with a cup of ice cold water. Ew, right!?

But it’s ok: maybe it’s good that this is one I don’t like in milk: afterall with how much matcha I have it’s going to take quite a lot of milk to finish it up and having a variety of ways to enjoy it is a plus. So I’ve got Club Soda + Pear or Bananas & Cream and this one in straight up cold water, and the others in milk…

Works for me.

TeaNecromancer

ewww or like those mint flavored bottles of Mylanta? Blech!

Marzipan

I have a bit of pear and would like to make a soda from it. My daughter is really into matcha but so far we have only tried lattes. I’m not sure she would like it unsweetened, have you tried sweetening yours at all? What is your preferred method, do you mix it into a bit of hot water first?
