From Mandala Tea

This young tea hits a sweet spot for us. It’s got enough assertive potency to be excellent for aging while still being very graceful and enjoyable to drink now. Cang Jia is sometimes spelled more like it sounds, “Chang Jia”. The village lies about half way between Kunming and Lincang in the Wuliang area of Yunnan Province. This 2015 spring-picked tea was tested free of pesticide residues. The flavors are rich – buttery, pepper, lemon with some tang that dances in the back corners of the mouth. It flexes its muscles in the early infusions with a bit of drying and cooling sensations. Popcorn-eque grain flavors and delicate sweetness develop later. – See more at: http://shopmandalatea.com/raw-pu-er-tea/2015-cang-jia-shuffle.html#sthash.OMZk6chK.dpuf

Clearly this tea comes with a pedigree. When tea masters and discriminating connoisseurs Redford and SkyBlu immortalise your tea in song, you know you’ve made it. Well done Mandala.

I am not yet at the level of these esteemed sommaliers of Chinese tea, however, as I do not believe I have the capacity to enjoy this tea every day, as they have reported doing. It is a remarkably smooth drinker, yet with enough punchiness to retain interest, it’s true. But their refined palates must be grasping nuances beyond the ken of a beginner such as myself, to lead them to imbibe this on the daily. I do not think it could hold my interest at that frequency, though the fault is surely mine.

Yes, I will just come out and admit it. At best, I’d be shufflin’ monthly.

From the first moment I cracked the bag, I knew I was going to like this tea. It smells sweet, floral and fruity. Tasting the first steep I got just a hint of cloves and lemon, with a buttery slightly sweet finish! The second and third steepings have more fresh, green flavors but retain their buttery goodness. There is a clean tannic finish that comes out especially in the second steeping.
