We love this tea. If you enjoy brawny, sweet sheng with a nice smokey flavor this one is for you. The cakes are spring harvested 2007 material pressed at the Haiwan factory. Purple tea shows areas of red and purple colors on the leaves because of the hightened anthocyanin content. This compound serves as a natural defence against UV rays for the plant and provides the drinker with an antioxidant boost.
The dry leaves in a warmed gaiwan gave us an obvious camphor and smoke aroma with some mysterious forest floor in the background. This tea isn’t a baby anymore and gives the impression of something a little more mature than it is. Perhaps the oxidation is somewhat more advanced due to the loose compression. After a rinse, the tea also gave up the first clues of some fruit and dark, carmel like sweetness.
Early infusions yield a surprisingly low amount of sourness and the promised sweet wood smoke remains up front. In the many later infusions, we found more fruit and camphor. It’s such a treat to observe the flavors left in the mouth well after drinking these raw pu’ers. The lasting sweetness is easy to observe by pulling in breath around the tongue.

I think I gave a pretty good description the last time I had a session with it, so I won’t go into any long winded detailed account of each steeping. Right now the cup is sweet, like a light nectar, with just a hint of smoke & a camphor after-glow. My brain is lit up like a lightbulb, & I feel very relaxed & present. This is a crystal clear sheng, & I’m really enjoying it!
I had a challenging day at work. Came home, looked at my tea stash and thought – I don’t want to make a decision. So I reached into my sample box and randomly pulled one out. When I saw this, my first reaction was ugggggg, and my second was – at least it came from Garret. For those that don’t really know me, let me explain. I want to like sheng, really I do. I keep buying samples, and I keep trying but it seems that the more I fall in love with shou the more I dislike sheng. The vast majority of the ones that I’ve tried have fallen into two categories – really green and bitter or dirty stagnant swamp water. And then I run into one like this……. if all sheng were like this I would drink more of it.
This is fantastic!!!!!!!!! It tastes like sheng…whatever that taste is….. a little green, a little smokey, a little earthy, clean. This one is darker than most I’ve had. It’s pretty sweet, it’s really good. If anyone out there is like me…..not liking the bitter greenness of sheng, I encourage you to try this.

Good ole Haiwan, Lao Tong Zhi. The man in charge of this tea company worked for the Menghai Factory for over 40 years. He has a good base for tea. The shou’s are nice with about 5 years age on them.
LOL. Dirty stagnant swamp water. Yeah, that’s bad. I do like the bitter greenness, in moderations.

This is the smokiest sheng I’ve ever had! But in a totally pleasant way. It tastes like camping somewhere exotic. Very woodsy and mysterious with a nice shengy twang :)

This Purple Leaf Raw has been the gateway into sheng pu’er countless times here in our shop! We’ve got so many customers turning into sheng tea heads because of the experience they have with this tea. It’s like a potato chip. You can’t have just one sip. You keep coming back for more :)

I really like that sheng,it was one of the first I ever purchased….I have a few put away,ive been contemplating breaking into one as its so good…yum..
I only got a small quantity of it to sample, but I am really enjoying it. I think I can drink it a couple more times. I’m trying to get myself under control & stick with smaller quantities like this, as I always want to buy whole cakes of everything, LOL, & then I store them in my bedroom on the 3rd floor away from the kitchen aromas. Right now I probably already have enough tea up there to drink for the rest of my life…
I know exactly where you’re coming from…there’s no way I could ever drink all of what I have…my son will be the recipient of my tea collection,he will have an appreciation for it as he loves tea too..
Yeah, when I pass away & my kids are going through my stuff, it will be like a bad reality show: hidden boxes of tea everywhere, Journals that date back to college (actually, my daughters will love reading those), not to mention all the sheet music, instruments, & other music related stuff.
