From Lupicia

A special blend only using summer-plucked Darjeeling, often called “the Champagne of teas.” Fruity and fresh, yet the mouthfeel is crisp and concentrated.

Fruity, strong enough to cut through spicy spaghetti sauce and still be able to taste the tea. 3 min- strong and malty

I’ve had this twice so far and I’m not sure what to think about it.

On one hand, the first try was actually pretty decent from what I remember – nice and fruity and grapey.

But when I had it again yesterday, it tasted bitter like coffee. I’m going to blame that on the fact that I drank it at work and used the water there. But since I’m spending far more prime tea-drinking hours at work than at home, I should get used to it, I think.

I decided to try the Darjeeling The Second Flush back to back with the Darjeeling First Flush. Taste wise The Second Flush is a heavier (but still light) than the First Flush, and has a mild roasted flavor. However, it’s also more astringent, which isn’t to my liking.

For a black tea, this is quite green tasting. The base is fairly smooth but there is a floral quality to it that just comes off drying. It’s not horrible but it’s also not for me.

I have only tried Darjeeling teas once or twice in the past, and from those experiences learned that they could be quite sensitive to water temperature and steep time. So I was quite careful to not oversteep this sample from Lupicia today! The dry aroma is unlike any tea I’ve smelled before—it’s very intense and pleasant, and reminds me of shortbread or some other type of sweet, dense pastry. The aroma of the brewed tea is more complex, with dark floral and what I just term “black tea fragrance” notes. The taste of this tea is not as intense as I expected from the aroma. It almost seems to float on the tongue—maybe a little floral, and definitely light, but mostly it’s something that I have no experience with tasting or describing before. Complex, and certainly unique. Fortunately, with the careful infusion, there was no bitterness as had occurred last time I tried a Darjeeling, so this is more like how it’s supposed to be appreciated. It’s hard for me to decide how I really feel about it, given that it’s not comparable to anything else I’ve tried, and that is a problem that can only be solved by experiencing more teas!

This was nice in that it had a beautifully light floral aroma, paired with a woody and slightly nutty undertone (like dark chocolate).
The tea is drying to the palette even with the addition of milk to mitigate, but it’s lovely all the same.

I’m going to have to remember this one in future.

I don’t mind a cup of darjeeling once in awhile, but they just don’t knock my socks off. I do prefer 2nd flush to 1st, and this isn’t a bad little cup of tea, a little floral, a little woody. Not particularly exciting, but it is another *Sil*pdown! ;)
