I was one of the lucky ones that received a generous horde of various teas from iTeaworld. This was among the pile.

I find most common dianhongs to be really heavy and tannic. I’ve learned to usually eat something with the tea, for it can cause some heavy stomach irritation. This was not the case with this brew! The leaves carried the popular malt, oak, and vanilla scent from red teas; the broth was quite similar. I brewed this outside with a thick-walled shibo with boiling water and about 15sec steeps. The tea was perfect for the cooler morning! I was greeted with smooth warm laps of sweet tea with a dry hardwood finish. There was plenty of softer notes mixed in the background… malt, vanilla, and maple. I was able to pull about 3 pleasant steeps from the leaves. Very nice and great way to start the day.

The sweet acid aroma of dry leaves reminded me apricots and wild flowers honey. Very elegantly twisted brown ang gold leaves and buds. The wood aroma and taste are present on the liquor, as well as some cacao hint (very dark chocolate 80+%). I perceived a pleasant freshness that takes all your mouth, even being a robust and full of body malty tea. Almost imperceptible bitterness after several cups, with the chocolate aroma present to the last sip.

The dry aroma is lovely. Sweetness of honey, and light plum with sweet woody notes. The leaf is a dusty dark chocolate color with hints of golden buds; beautifully twisted. A hint of chocolate lingers in the bag. The liquor color is so beautiful. A nice amber coloring. The taste is full of different woody notes. Desert wood, old house wood, some varnish (you’ll experience this all in higher amounts as you steep it longer). The wet leaf aroma is a bit bready with hints of raisins.

Gongfu Sipdown (2351)!

Like many of my other tea friends here and on IG, I was also reached out to by iteaworld to try some of their teas!! This morning, I decided to kick off my sampling with their Yunnan Black alongside some sweet Niagara grapes as a bit of a “breakfast” tea session. To me, the standout tasting note of the session was a warm, inviting golden note of baked or roasted yams. Though I didn’t find this tea to necessarily be sweet, the mix of these starchier flavours with supporting notes of cocoa, pecan, and malt combined in a way that was not unlike a sweet potato pie. Subtle undertones of raisins were made sweeter and more focal through the complimentary pairing of grapes!

Overall, I found this black tea very smooth and approachable with a medium to heavy body erring closer to the heavier side. It was a very nice intro to iteaworld, and it makes me excited for my next few sessions as I explore this sample pack!!
