From Hawa Matcha

Meet Hawa Matcha’s Ceremonial Uji Blend. This is a rare opportunity to try matcha from an emerging producer. After working many years with renowned tea makers, Inoueさん established his own brand in 2020 and quickly gained recognition, winning gold at the 2023 Leafies Awards in the House Blend category. This matcha demonstrates his skill at blending premium teas to create something greater than the sum of its parts. The result is remarkably creamy—even as usucha, it has the texture of frothed milk when freshly whisked.

Origin Uji, Kyoto
Cultivar Asahi, Uji Hikari, Samidori
Matcha Harvest Spring (First Harvest Leaves)
Tasting Notes Dark Chocolate, Black Sesame, Sweet Cream
Weight 20g

First time trying this matcha without anything added to it, and it was absolutely delightfully smooth and creamy both in terms of taste and texture. Virtually no bitterness, and just a really sweet and milky profile. Obviously not this sweet, but it did make me think a bit of White Rabbit candies which have such a lovely lightly caramelized “cooked milk” profile.

I paired it with a purple sweet potato lava mooncake, which had a very strong nutty and starchy profile that really complimented the matcha. It was a very peaceful moment enjoyed tucked away in a little alcove outdoors.

(Did I pick this song because the cover art is a white rabbit? Maybe.)
