From Harney & Sons

Our Decaffeinated Earl Grey starts with our Decaffeinated Ceylon. This is then scented with the natural Oil of Bergamot as with the traditional Earl Grey blend.

Backlog from last night

A big thank you to Nicole for this sample! I have to say there are a few earl grey’s in my cupboard but I don’t think I’ve had any of them or likely not many of them. I’m still not convinced they’re a type of tea that I enjoy but it’s possible that flavoured earl grey’s may be my thing.

I pulled this one out last night because I’m trying to get through as many of my samples as possible before my swaps and last remaining orders arrive this month. Plus it was late at night, so i figured decaf would be the way to go.

I don’t think that i’m a fan of bergamot. I’m fairly certain that’s the underlying taste that i’m not loving. Otherwise it’s a fairly smooth tasting brew. I’m going to hold off rating this for now as well because i’d like to try this with a bit of milk and sugar. Overall not a bad tea, just nothing i need to keep around necessarily.

Appreciate the Sample as always Nicole!

I knew you’d see the light ;P

Thank you Nicole for this sample!

Earl grey wafting in the air….sniff….smells delightful. This is a nice and light EG with nice bergamot flavouring. A little more lemon than most EGs probably. I actually like that this is decaf because I love black tea but don’t always need that caffeine kick.

I also think this would be great as an iced tea.

Tea #28 from Traveling Tea Box C

More Earl Grey!

This one is better balanced than the Teavana tea, to be sure. And I think the Bergamot flavor is better done. It’s also a softer flavored cup, lacking the punch I expected in an EG.

For decaf, though, this is pretty outstanding.

Tea #14 from the traveling tea box.

Ah, Earl Grey how I love you, you’ve always been my favorite. This is a pretty mild Earl Grey compared to the Rishi Earl Grey that I normally drink. I like that it is decaf and still manages to have a nice flavor, even if it isn’t as strong as I would like.

Wow. I put it in the box because it was too strong for me. You like a mean Earl Grey.

Short Sorceress

I really do and Rishi makes one that fits the bill perfectly :)

First and foremost, I would like to thank Nicole for sending me this tea! :)

I brewed the Decaf Earl Grey to boiling temperature. I steeped it for approximately five minutes. The aroma is a wonderful scent of bergamot. I personally love Earl Grey blends. The fact that this is decaf allows me to drink it without worrying about consuming too much caffeine. I think that it’s the right blend. It has the essence of what makes a “Earl Grey” blend.

Not a favorite. I have been spoiled by Earl Grey Supreme from Harney and Sons! I had a kidney stone a week ago and I am not allowed to have caffeine until I stop the meds for it, so I tried this one. It just didn’t scratch the itch, though! The bergamot oil was too strong in this one for me.

Sorry about the stone. I hear they are painful. Yikes.

ashmanra

Thanks, and yes, they are painful! Glad it is gone, and I will be so happy when I can drink my tea with abandon again!

I went on a bit of a sampling kick and ordered 2 of the boxed Harney samplers, so I was able to compare Decaf to straight Earl Grey. On the whole I prefer Decaf. It’s significantly lighter than Harney’s Earl Grey. I haven’t tried a Lady Grey, but I’m suspicious it may fall into that category as it’s a heck of a lot lighter than Earl Grey. I thought it was lovely and it might end up being my new Earl Grey.

Sipping a bagged version today—needed something to warm my frozen office toes, but did not need to add caffeine jitters to other jitters (juggling a lot at work/home and dropping most of it ). EG fans probably wouldn’t have a lot to say in its favor, because both the base and flavoring are quite light, but for me, that’s a plus.

ashmanra

This is one I haven’t tried. I like Decaf Paris pretty well. This might be similar.

gmathis

Another review said more lemony that bergamotty. I agree.

ashmanra

Oooooooo interesting. I like lemony black (and green and white) tea.

This has arrived!

I steeped this up at 3 minutes because the tin said 5, and I told myself that I couldn’t possibly steep it for 5 minutes. I mean, why would 5 minutes even be necessary? Well, 3 minutes wasn’t quite enough. XD But I do think 4 minutes might be the sweet spot.

I put a little bit of simple syrup and frothed almond milk in here and it’s quite tasty. I don’t know why I’m craving these Earl Grey lattes, but I’ll just enjoy it while it lasts!

It is helping my productivity, at least. I’ve got a paper outline and I’m officially started in on the first section. What a Friday!

I love London Fogs too, but I never seem to make them… I have the vanilla syrup and everything!

Courtney

I have always had my tea without anything in them until about 2 weeks ago! Now I can’t seem to get enough! I’m super lazy about how I make them, but they taste good and that’s what counts.

Cameron B.

I can definitely understand the craving as the weather gets colder. I’ve been hitting the cocoa pretty hard lately! :P

Courtney

Exactlyyyy! Is it cold where you are?

Cameron B.

No, LOL! I’m in Austin, TX. We did have a few days of around 7° C a week or two ago, but generally it’s more like 24-25° C… XD

Courtney

Hahah, well 7° C is cool enough! I wish it was regularly in the 20’s here!

Cameron B.

Honestly I was so sad when the temperature went back up. I’m ready for cooler weather and cozy sweaters and boots!

Courtney

That’s fair — cozy sweaters are so nice! Summer and fall are my favs. Winter I could do without. XD

Silent Kettle

So glad this tea helped your productivity! I am so curious to try Harney & Sons. I keep hearing wondering things about them.

Courtney

I really enjoy H&S. I used to have a lot more of their teas, but that was when it was more accessible to travel to the US and pick them up! I’ve been looking at ordering again! You can also find them a few other places for sale too!

Cameron B.

Honestly I should try more teas from Harney, they have nice little sample sizes available for most things!

Courtney

They do! I was on their website just last week haha. I should really make a list of the companies I want to order from so I don’t lose the run of myself.

Cameron B.

I’ve started kind of doing that, mostly because Black Friday and Cyber Monday will be coming this month and maybe there will be good sales at some places. :P

Courtney

I am the worst for forgetting about Black Friday/Cyber Monday haha. But the Teavivre was a good idea — I think it was ashmanra that mentioned I should wait for that one. I’m not sure where else I absolutely need to order from right now. I was looking at a couple teahouses in BC last night. We are contemplating picking up a TV for Black Friday this year, so that may be most of the budget. :)

Cameron B.

I’ve been wanting to order some Holiday teas from Simpson & Vail since they don’t seem to offer an advent this year, so I’m hoping they may take part. :)

Courtney

Oooh, good idea. I have my entire cart set for them, and I’ve already emailed them about different shipping options to Canada. Maybe if they take part, the price will be right!

AJRimmer

S&V usually has a spend $50, get $10 off the first week in November, but they didn’t have it this year. For Black Friday, I think they usually decrease the free shipping barrier to $35 and that’s it.

I’m always looking for a great decaf earl grey. I have four ounces of this one, so I certainly hope I like it! Hmm it’s a pretty light earl grey. I tend to prefer them a bit stronger since I make them into lattes. Not strong enough for a second steep, though I find that decaf black teas usually aren’t. I suppose I’m a bit disappointed, but it’s good enough to keep drinking.

Also I had a wonderful Thai tea at a restaurant that reminded me that I have some loose leaf Thai tea at home that I haven’t made in a while.
