From Harney & Sons

Our Irish Breakfast tea is 100% Assam, and like most traditional Irish blends, this is a great way to begin your morning. In contrast to other versions of Irish Breakfast tea, you could say ours is a little more sophisticated. It tastes great on its own or takes milk and sugar well.

Ingredients: Black tea.

Details: The Harneys have been out of Ireland for sometime, so our Irish Breakfast is an older version. This tea recalls a time when the teas came from Assam, not Africa; and were small broken leaves, not CTC pellets. So this is a simple tea that can handle milk and sugar well.
Dry Leaves: Dark brown leaves.
Liquor: A medium-dark brown liquor.
Aroma: This has some of the malty aromas found in other Assams. However, since it is a smaller tea and there are no tips, the aromas seem to be muted.
Caffeine Level: Caffeinated
Body: This has very good body. It is usually served with milk. Of course, the Irish would have it no other way.
Flavors: This is usually served with milk and sugar, so the flavors harmonize well with them. There are subtle notes of roast malt.
Brewing Time: 4 to 5 minutes
Brewing Temp: 212° Fº

Nice mild, malty tea for when you don’t want something bold and astringent.

The lovely Shae surprised me with the sweetest tea package last week (including AQTT’s Sticky Toffee Bread Pudding, which I am over the moon about!) and this was one of the samples she included. I have to say, I think Harney & Sons nailed the quintessential Irish Breakfast blend with this one. It’s bold, strong, and malty, has tons of flavor even with milk added, and wakes you right up! I’ll be keeping this one in mind next time I order from H&S.

You know, as much as I love my unleaded malt first thing in the morning, I believe I have neglected to try this one! (Anybody know if this is one of the flavors H&S sells retail?)

Inkling

“Unleaded malt”…that is an awesome tea description. :D Hope you’re able to track some down!

Erin Go Brah!

This is the tea of today. There is a very nice malty scent, with some honey notes. The flavour is richly malt, and lightly sweet. A very good morning tea.

I got a sample of this from Ost. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a breakfast tea, but they’re nice to have occasionally. I’m not too familiar with the right words to describe a black tea, but this tastes kind of similar to golden monkey teas I’ve had in the past. My steep time was a little shorter than usual to avoid bitterness. It tasted nice alone, but I added milk and sugar because that’s my preferred way to consume black teas. I don’t usually want this much caffeine at a time, so I won’t restock, but it tastes good if this is the sort of thing you want.

Not bad…I had this on the stronger side with a little milk. Its a nice morning time tea. Currently wondering why the heck I would sign up for 5 classes at one time. Ugh, can’t I just read the books and do the Q&A ? Why oh why must there be so many projects and essays? (gripe, vent, gripe) I much too old for this. At least this will be it for me – I will have reached the highest level/salary scale for my job and/or future pension if there is one to be had here in Illinois. And yet…I am thankful I have tea to see me through it.

I know ashmanra is not on anyone’s payroll, but she is making a lot of tea vendors happy. Shortly after sampling Queen Catherine, I got an email from Harney offering discounts on their breakfast teas. A fan of black tea – I ordered. Several.

Harney’s Irish Breakfast is a brisk, malty Assam blend bursting with both flavor and aroma. Methinks there may be an “Irish Lunch” somewhere in my future…

A favorite of my youngest!

AuntTea

I will second this description. I have tried many Irish Breakfast teas. Harney’s is the smoothest and most interesting I have found.

I will be ordering this one again. :)

This a good, solid tea. Great for starting the day with. As with all the Harney’s I’ve tried so far, no bitterness. Full bodied traditional red. The only possible negative is that it seems the flavor comes through the best when made as a pot, as opposed to a single cup.

Have you tried Big Red Sun yet? It is the same tea as Royal English Breakfast in sachets in the Historic Royal Palaces tin but loose leaf. I think you would like it.

cuddlesmom

I haven’t tried Big Sun yet but it’s on the list. Right now I have the Royal Palace blend in the pretty turquoise and white canister on order. Those canisters get me every time :) Thanks for the recommendation. I will let you know what I think of it.

It’s malty; it’s tannic. It’s not a bad tea, but I have sipped from the Fountain of Knowledge that is Yunnan black tea, and now I can’t return. This tastes pretty one-dimensional to me now. I find it better than Twinings, but that’s about all I can say for it.

I might still enjoy it oversteeped with some milk and sugar.

Well this is a nice slap in the face this morning. Damn that has a kick. I have learned as an adult to get up when the body tells you to get up, that maybe an hour before your alarm clock goes off, it maybe 30 mins. Never ever go back to sleep b/c you have an hour before your alarm will go off. This morning I ignored that tried and true logic. I am paying dearly. Waking up mid sleep cylce is pretty much like trying to start a car in -1000 degree weather. This cup is doing a great job of jumping starting the engine. Its got a kick but this is one of those cups where I think a little milk would make it a better cup. Not a love but a great cup.
