From Harney & Sons

The tea company has certainly grown since 1983, and we’ve become involved in so many wonderful projects. PH Nargeolet, one of the divers with the French exploratory group at Woods Hole in Massachusetts when the Titanic was found, encouraged John to do a commemorative tea to honor the 100th Anniversary of those who perished when the Titanic sank. As a tribute to the tragedy and heroism of “A Night to Remember”, John has created a tea blend which reflects the quality of tea that was served on the Titanic.
There is Chinese Keemun, one of the last teas British still consumed in 1912. The British had mostly switched to black teas from Assam, India and Ceylon. Also there is Formosa Oolong, which was popularized in both the UK and the US by an enterprising Brit. So this blend would have been recognizable to tea lovers a hundred years ago.

A portion of the sales of our RMS Titanic Tea will go to The Ocean Conservancy, the dedicated organization committed to preserving one of the Earth’s most valuable resources, our Oceans. We hope you will enjoy this tea, and “Remember".

This tea was what sold me on my last Harney & Sons order. When I was a kid, I saw a documentary on the Titanic and became instantly fascinated. I read every National Geographic article on it I could get my hands on, and my dad even took us to see a display of the items recovered from the wreck. Fascinating and tragic stuff.

Anyway, I expected this to be some sort of English breakfast deal, and I was right. The leaves are very short, dark, and fine. My teaspoon scooped up what looks like a lot, so I tried to use a little less leaf than I normally would. Though it brews up very deep reddish brown, the flavor is milder than I expected. It tastes mostly like an assam, but I am also getting notes of Chinese black teas. There’s also apparently oolong mixed in, too? I can’t really detect that over the keemun. It’s mostly just a malty, bready black blend. There’s also a pleasant bitterness that reminds me of dark chocolate in a way.

This is a perfect blend for work, I think. High caffeine and a hearty flavor without being too astringent.

I’ve had this on my list for quite a while. It sounds nice!

It’s definitely worth getting a sample to try!

Isnt Titanic the exact same blend as Palm Court? It actually came with a second label once when it first came out and I think that’s what it was. Big Red Sun is Royal English Breakfast.

Granted, it’s a tourist trap, but a Titanic reconstruction/museum is just a couple hours from us and I’d love to walk through it. Love the era, fascinated with the story, and I can always remember the date of its demise—same as my birthday. Month and day, not year. I’m a geezer, but not quite that geezerly.

As others have noted, there is a leathery flavor to this tea, but it’s not overpowering. It kind of reminds me of Teavivre’s Fengqing Dragon Pearls, though this is not nearly as strong or nuanced as the pearls. It’s like their mild second cousin. Overall an interesting blend and I’m happy to finish off the sample, but I don’t think I need to stock this.

This blend is wonderful. My student who’s obsessed with the Titanic wanted something “Titanic-y” for his birthday. I asked his mother (he’s six, so a black tea blend isn’t ideal for a young child his age) if she likes tea, but she doesn’t; therefore, I bought the tea, but gave him the tin—which is very cool.

The tea is magical. When looking for a good black/oolong tea blend, this is what I want. It’s rich, yet earthy. I like it as is (which is rare), but my wife thinks that it pairs well with a touch of sugar and cream.

(Side Note: I bought this tea prior to Christmas, and drank a few cups within a week. I just now finished it while eating an anise & almond pizzelle that my mother made for us, and it was the proper thing to have with it. The anise helped enrich the blend, and actually enhanced the flavor of the pizzelle. I will definitely buy this again soon!)

Thanks for the sample Marzipan

Well, this isn’t offensive in any way, but it is pretty flat and boring compared to all the delicious Yunnan Sourcing and Butiki black teas I’ve been drinking lately! I’m pretty spoiled ;)

Tin is pretty though

I admit, I was influenced a little bit by the cute tin, so it was a little disappointing to find that it’s a black tin with a Titanic sticker on it. Oh well. It’s a black tea blend and those are always welcome here!

For the past few nights I have picked this up, realized it had caffeine and put it back, vowing to remember to drink it the next morning. Today I actually remembered.

The tin recommends a 5 minute steep, and since it’s a bag I did that. My initial impression was that it tasted sort of thin and one note. But as it cooled a little, it tasted more full and robust. I liked it. Next time I might try it with a bit of milk and see what that does.

It’s nice to have some decent bags around for portability.

Glad to know I’m not the only one wowed by those tins!

Wanted a rich flavorful black tea this morning and this seems to be my go-to for that category currently. I was not at all disappointed. I think I tasted a bit of the citrus others have talked about, this time. I think I might go for a second steep on this one today… stay tuned.

Edit: Second steep was pleasant, but didn’t have nearly the punch of the first. Definitely not as complex tasting on the second steep.
