IT’S ACTUALLY BLUE!

The Ice Cave Blue Tea has the Made in Alaska seal of approval. Drink in the rainforest with its wonderful local bounty and celebrate the ice caves with its blue color. This in-house herbal blend created by Janice McCann is unique to Juneau, Alaska and we are delighted to have this herbal tea be a part of the Juneau Food Tour.

BUTTERFLY PEA FLOWER

This flower is the reason that the tea is blue and is used as a natural food coloring. It ranges in color from blue, green, pink and purple depending on the other ingredients. Within traditional Chinese medicine, the plant has been ascribed properties affecting female libido.

DEVIL’S CLUB

Devil’s club, also called devil’s walking stick, is a perennial shrub that occurs naturally in the damp woodlands of the Pacific Northwest. It is particularly at home in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest and plays an important role both spiritually and medicinally in Native American tribe societies such as Haida and Tlingit. The herb is a member of the ivy family and related to American ginseng, the latter fact giving rise to the nickname “Alaskan ginseng.” Devil’s club is challenging to harvest because the entire plant is covered with relentless thorns, but once the root and root bark are obtained it can be made into a tea and used to produce ointments and salves, traditionally used for pain relief and skin conditions.

I’ve had this once before, I think, but I cannot remember whether I liked it. I don’t drink many herbals, or at least I don’t drink herbals often, so I’m trying to remedy that. Having this one today as a latte with coconut milk and honey. The flavor reminds me of marshmallows, or maybe it’s the texture. I couldn’t say whether that’s the flavor of the tea coming through or the coconut milk. Probably the coconut milk. I really love it though. I don’t see a reason to drink this any other way after trying it like this.

STTB Tea

I thought I would like this one because I love oatstraw and dried grass in herbals. This one tastes like licorice root, celery seed, and some spices from your grandma’s spice cabinet. Despite the pretty colour, I can’t really get into this blend. The fruit is faint, the metallic overly sweet licorice root doesn’t go at all, and the blend doesn’t have any lavender from what I can taste. It was a neat experience to taste this, however I don’t see myself wanting to have this again. I think I associate the savoury herbs with medicinal stuff and it doesn’t make me enjoy the cup as much.

Samurai Travelling Tea Box – Tea #19

Cold Brew! Thanks again Shae for including this one for me!

This is quite a unique profile compared to the many other butterfly pea flower blends I’ve tried; mellow and refreshing honey and nutty notes from all of the oat straw with a subtle warming ginger, whisper of blueberry, and lingering back of the throat sweetness from the licorice!!

I found it refreshing, but I honestly couldn’t decide by the end of the brew if I actually liked the flavour or not. It wasn’t bad or anything, but it was just sort of so different that I threw me off and I couldn’t see it having a larger place in my cupboard.

Adding it back to the box – I really want to see other people’s thoughts on it!
