From Golden Moon Tea

For Sinharaja we use rich, dark loose leaf tea leaves that are nourished by fertile rain forest streams in the hills of Ceylon. It has a toasty, molasses-like character with ripe berry notes and a caramelized finish. Serve with a touch of raw sugar and cream for a taste that is smooth, full-bodied and warming.

Our owner, Marcus Stout, drinks a lot of tea. He actually drinks so much that sometimes we think he may start sprouting leaves! And no matter what day it is, he always starts his morning with Sinharaja. This rich black tea is not only one of Marcus’ favorites, but it was also named the #1 tea by the food critics at Gayot. Sinharaja has everything you want in a strong black tea. It is smooth, rich, complex, and can stand up to milk. In fact, that is how Marcus drinks this tea. With 2% milk and a dollop of honey.

Ingredients
Pure Black Tea Grown Bordering the Sinharaja Rainforest.

Preparation
1) Bring fresh, filtered water to a boil
2) Pour over your tea leaves in a teapot
(1 spoonful of tea per serving)
3) Steep 4 minutes
4) Stir, strain, and enjoy!

This is excellent. A nice, dark, flavorful tea with such a smooth taste.

The dry leaves smell sweet, which a “bready” quality. They actually remind me a little of banana bread for some reason. These are nice, long, full dried leaves that expand and unfurl to release some great flavors.

The tea tastes nice without any sweetener, but since I prefer my black teas to be on the sweet side, I added just a touch of sugar. The dark tea has a raisin-like taste, but without being particularly fruity. After a few sips it gets sweeter (maybe it’s because the tea is cooling), with a taste like the burnt sugar crust on creme brulee. And it does this all without being overly sweet.

I’m sad I only have a sample. After I finish all my Golden Moon samples, I’ll probably order 3 pr 4 of my favorites. This is definitely on my short list.

My wife was given this tea as a gift. She got it as loose leaf tea. I must say, it is one of the best black teas I have had. I concur with the cocoa and berry notes. I like to sample the aroma of the tea before I infuse. The aroma was a good anticipation of the flavor.

Hello Thursday! The day of throwbacks, and more importantly, D&D! Tonight I will finally be unveiling my newly painted druid miniature, which is very excited. Sadly I am still having a hard time finding various animals and such since she is shapeshifter, so alas, sometimes my druid is played by a d20.

It is time for a #TBT tea review, rumaging through my old notebooks for long neglected tea notes, and that neglected tea is none other than Golden Moon Tea’s Sinharaja, a Black Tea from Ceylon, grown bordering the Sinharaja Rain forest. Of course by Ceylon I mean Sri Lanka, old habits die hard, not that I am from a century ago or anything. The aroma of the dark leaves is very rich, strong notes of molasses and malt, caramelized sugar, and a tiny bit of nuttiness arise from the now sniffed leaves. After it has been thoroughly warmed by my nose I also got some honey and cocoa at the finish, fun!

Into the steeping basket the leaves went, for their nice sauna visit. Sometimes I envy tea, and then I remember how many hot baths I take, and realized that was silly. The leaves are woody, the aroma reminds me of tree bark, specifically walnut tree, with an addition of molasses and a touch of honey. the liquid is still quite woody, but with an addition of caramelized sugar and molasses with just a touch of yam.

Moment of truth, tasting time! Ok, the actual tasting happened a while ago, but the notes make it seem like yesterday! The taste is very rich, starting off with strong notes of oak and walnut wood and molasses, mixes richness with briskness, waking up the mouth. It then moves on to cocoa, malt, and a touch of honey, with a finish of caramel at the finish. I decided to add cream and sugar, haven’t done that in a while, mostly because I tend to always be out of cream when I want to go all tea additive happy! Adding the cream and sugar brings out the malt and molasses notes and makes them foremost, all of the brisk notes are removed, honestly did not need much in the way of sugar since it was already subtly sweet. Overall this tea is quite solid, a good example of a quality Ceylon tea.

Okay, I needed to follow the directions, I guess. I was a little nervous about steeping a Ceylon type of tea for 4-5 minutes. But at 3 minutes I get a pretty standard, unremarkable tea with none of the notes that other reviewers have noticed. Gonna have to try it again. Longer time, maybe more leaf.

The wonderful and generous DigniTea sent me this tea as part of a swap, and the only label on the bag was “Golden Moon Tea Sinharaja”. I’ve never heard of Golden Moon Tea, or of Sinharaja before, so when I looked at the medium length, black tightly twisted leaves, I had no idea what I was up for.
But then I opened the bag.
Do you know the wonderful smell a really good Ceylon has? Of juicy plums, and sweet, sweet raisins? This tea has it, abundantly.
So, first for the Ceylon haters among you – yes, it is astringent. But it is a very, very mild astringency – something that you oftentimes get with Assams, Nilgiris, Kenyans or other non-Chinese black teas.
And now for the Ceylon lovers – how is it?
Silky smooth, with a juicy sweetness to it that has a slightly darker twist on the Ceylon flavour profile than more sparkling Ceylons and Ceylon blends have. This is like a Ceylon grown up – no longer playing the trumpet, but taking on a baritone saxophone instead. So there isn’t the bass of an Assam, or the super smoothness of the Nilgiri, but it is leaning in that direction.
An interesting and excellent Ceylon that is probably a must buy if you like Ceylons, and a “yes, you should certainly give this a go” for people who don’t normally go for the Ceylon flavour.
P.S. I wouldn’t couple this with milk, although if the astringency bothers you, sugar will take what little edge there is off.
P.S. 2 – Sipdown!

As I sit here lovingly sipping my third cup of this today I wonder why I originally rated this a 92. Changed the rating to a 99 because this is now my favorite tea. I drink 2-3 cups every morning and love it so much that when I traveled to my sister’s this past wknd it is the one I had to take with me. The caramel/molasses flavors in this tea make it wonderfully sweet all on it’s own. Adding just a touch of milk to it gives it a creaminess that makes it just perfect.

Two of my nieces turned out to be big tea drinkers-something I never knew before I really got “into” tea because it had really never come up. One of them totally fell for this tea and is now interested in loose leaf teas as well. The other….well, she’s still on her Bigelow bag tea that she has been downing as a pregnancy craving…lol.

In any case, I will NEVER be without this tea unless they stop selling it. It is so good I can’t even “hoard” it and “save it for special occasions” like I usually do when I find a really good one I love. I am addicted to it so if I run out I’ll just get more. LOL.

This tea brews up to a nice classic copper orange colour and smells of plum tinted with cherry, cinnamon, and malt with brown sugar. There is a hint of sweet potato as it cools and the spice becomes slightly floral reminding me of clover nectar.

It taste very smooth with sweet sugary fruit notes up front, strong ripe plum is evident sprinkled with brown sugar, followed by a soft floral note that is slightly powdery and finished with malt. The texture is almost creamy. Hidden in the malt is a bit of cocoa and sweet potato. There is a slight grain note like barley present. The flavour is rich but the tea seems to be too thin to add milk to. The aftertaste is a mix of bitter malt and sugared fruit. A very nice mix of fruit, spice, floral notes and malt.

Thank you so much Dexter3657 for sharing this sample for me. It is quite a nice Ceylon.

Delicious cup this early AM. Sweet with a subtle honey flavor. Decided to try to enhance the flavor with a bit of cream and sugar – sweet, creamy decadence! Just what I was looking for…….
