Welcome to British Columbia, where the weather is soggy but the flavours are oh so sweet. Inspired by the regional dessert, this tea is like biting into a mouth-coating custard topped with toasted coconut and rich chocolate ganache.
What makes it great
Nanaimo bars are named for their city of origin: Nanaimo, BC. They’re now considered one of Canada’s most iconic treats.

Soooo, I got a little derailed from all this tea stuff again, but with good reason: I’m expecting my second child! Haha. Although I’ve still been drinking tea, I’ve been struggling with fatigue and nausea and all of the fun pregnancy things, and recording teas has simply not been anywhere near the top of my list. However, tonight I’ve fooled myself into thinking I have time to try and organize some of my teas (because I’ve still been purchasing – DavidsTea has had some great sales, especially on some of my family’s favourite iced teas, and I couldn’t resist) so I’m also trying to record some of my recent tea consumption and put some stuff away.
Anyhow, this tea. I’m a sucker for anything chocolate/coconut, and we actually even have nanaimo bars in the freezer right now due to an early pregnancy desire for them. So, I like nanaimo bars a decent amount. Dry, this tea smells deliciously like the sweet treat, complete with the creamy custardy inner layer, but when steeped up it fell a bit flat. However, it’s possible that that was because I had it after dessert, so my tastebuds might have been compromised. Luckily (?!) I have a whole 50g bag to play with to see whether or not I actually love it or not.

Thanks everyone! We’re very excited, and I’m also very much hoping that the nausea passes soon – I keep thinking it’s gone and then am wrong. I’m glad that I’m still enjoying tea, though! Just cutting back on the caffeinated ones… a bit.

Show of hands – how many people here on Steepster know what a Nanaimo Bar is!?
This is the final new tea from the recent collection drop – thought it’s a Super Steeper exclusive for the time being. I remember getting into several long conversations with coworkers about this tea during the development of it. In Saskatchewan, where I’m from, Nanaimo Bars are huge – must cafes with homebaked goods will carry Nanaimo Bars and you absolutely cannot go to a potluck, Church dinner, family gathering or really any type of communal gathering over shared food without at least someone bringing Nanaimo Bars. They’re rich and custardy bars of sheer decadent delight.
Then I went and moved to Quebec where apparently, no one knows what the hell a Nanaimo Bar is. Sure, they’ll eat pies that are literally just fudge with pie crust – but a Nanaimo Bar!? Oh, that’s far too crazy and out there!! So there was a lot of back and forth about whether or not people would “get” this tea and understand what it’s meant to be. I have faith, though, that the reach of Nanaimo Bars is far greater than what people might expect. It’s a Canadian classic, and deserves to tried!
So what does the tea taste like!? Well, like its inspiration, it’s definitely rich! The chocolate is certain stage but it’s supported by a mixture of creamy custard, coconut, and nuttier notes with just a faint hint of roast from the yerba mate in the blend. I do think it’s a bit less custardy in flavour than an actual Nanaimo Bar, and a bit more nutty – with a distinct almond note that sometimes pops up in the sip. However, it’s spiritually right on the mark – and I think fans of this Canadian treat will appreciate this interpretation.
