From DAVIDsTEA

Some say that spring isn’t really here until you taste your first strawberry. Others say it officially starts when you have your first picnic. But this all natural, berries-and-cream tea has everything you need to jump-start the season – rich black tea, juicy berries and a decadent hint of creaminess. What better way to celebrate the best time of the year? If you’re feeling adventurous, try brewing an extra-strong shot and adding it to your next smoothie, milkshake or pancake batter.

I am slowly working my way through the new spring tea collection from David’s. This tea was an immediate draw for me, I adore most strawberry teas and had high hopes for this one too. I have tried it several times so far and had mixed results. I think it has the potential to be a really nice tea, but I also think it can be a very finicky tea to brew. I find that it needs a bit of sweetening, but not too much sugar. I also think the base has the tendency to get a bitter if not steeped perfectly. The first time I steeped this I was pretty haphazard, and it didn’t go well for me. The next time I watched my steep time like a hawk, tossed in a bit of sugar and had a beautiful cup of black tea.

I do find that the strawberry is a sweeter strawberry, more akin to the old Sweet Strawberry flavour they used to have as a white. So this was a comforting, sweet berry more than a tart, refreshing berry note. (The cream flavouring may be adding to this as well though…)

i picked this one up to try yesterday as well without looking at any reviews. The verdict? this is one of the worst strawberry blacks that i’ve ever had. Seriously. it smelled amazing and tasted like nothing you’d want to try. artificial and weird. gross.

Sakura Sushi

Oh, no! That’s too bad – I love strawberry blacks and was planning on picking some up. Guess I shouldn’t bother.

Maddy Barone

Oh, no. I just ordered 50 grams. Hope I like it better than you did. :(

Sil

i hope it works for you Maddy!

VariaTEA

I definitely felt the same. This got dumped :(

TeaLady441

Wow. That bad? Ok, then pass!

leaf in hot water

good to know to steer clear of this one!

Maddy Barone

Since I don’t have a sense of smell, maybe I won’t taste the artificialness.

Having this cold brewed certainly did improve the taste. The artificial taste of the strawberry was toned down, though I still wouldn’t consider it at all natural tasting. I also found the various flavours blended together much better resulting in a more uniform sip. Despite the improvement, I would still say my feelings towards this tea are neutral at best. At least I know I’ll be able to get through what I have left of this relatively painlessly. My stock of teas I only really enjoy iced seems to be rapidly growing so hopefully I won’t get tired of iced tea anytime soon.

Yay, glad you thought it was better too. Cold brewing i also a good way to quickly get rid of teas that you don’t like haha.

Fay

Yeah, I think I’ll be cold brewing away most of the spring collection, except Berry Poppins and Melon Drop. Lesson learned for ignoring my instinct when smelling them and just buying them all. Haha.

Sipdown. This is much better as a cold brew. Not as artificial, but still moderately so. The creaminess has woken up a bit more and the black base is stronger, which is good because it covers up that obnoxiously fake strawberry flavour. I’d still never buy more but this is an easier way to finish up the 10g I purchased.

leaf in hot water

good to know!

TeaLady441

That sucks about it being so artificial. Maybe I"ll hold off before I buy anything!

M

I will try the cold brew. Maybe I wouldn’t mind the artificial taste so much in a cold drink.

Maddy Barone

My DAVID’s order arrived yesterday. Haven’t tried any of them yet. I will soon. I have to say, I wish I would have read reviews before I ordered this one. I guess I’ll cold brew a pot of it later this week and see what I think.

Fjellrev

Totally give the cold brewing a shot! Perhaps the cold numbs the palate a bit and makes the artificial notes more tolerable too haha.

This tea smells so good but tastes so artificial. The cream element of this combined with the base is just weirdly thick and sticks to your tongue and it’s just not pleasant. It really does smell awesome though. Perhaps as a latte this might be better??

OMGsrsly

That’s sad. I was excited about a possible strawberry black tea of goodness!

VariaTEA

I know. I like HI’s strawberry tea but will absolutely NOT order from them given their customer service. This smelled quite similar so I hoped for the best but it just did not work.

OMGsrsly

I couldn’t do their base tea! :) So I’m still on the lookout. And Zen Tea has the strawberry cream but it’s just not… it’s not it.

Starfevre

I liked Zen Tea’s Strawberry and Cream, though admittedly I had the herbal version and not the black tea one.

Dry Leaf Nose: A sweet and creamy aroma of a strawberry milkshake

Liquor: A rich red brown liquor

Flavour: The black tea is enhanced with the sweet flavour of fresh strawberries and cream. It’s very similar to strawberry ice cream, but is lighter and fresher.
