From DAVIDsTEA

We’re pretty strict about certain holiday traditions. Especially the delicious ones. So it should come as no surprise that we insist on sipping eggnog at every festive occasion. All things considered, it’s almost crazy that it took us thing long to find the perfect eggnog tea. But trust us, this rich and creamy rooibos blend was definitely worth the wait. With white chocolate, mini meringues and a hint of nutmeg, it’s a brand new tradition we can’t believe we ever went without.

Price: $8.50 per 50g

Sipdown (111)!

The “Eggnong” problem from last year returns…

Well, finished this off last night while waiting for my taxi home. I prepared it in a timolino with a couple splashes of milk and I think the milk certainly helped a lot with making this feel less thin, although it still wasn’t as rich as I’d have liked it to be flavour-wise (mouthfeel; check!). Definitely creamy white chocolate, and a little nutmeg to add a bit of depth.

If I had more I’d try it again with double the amount of leaf, but as is I’m out and I doubt I’ll be repurchasing it again just on a hunch that might taste more flavourful.

I made this last night in a DT latte mug (more like soup bowl) and I had trouble brewing it. When I’ve had it in a normal size mug I love it, but it’s a tricky tea for me because of the creaminess of the chocolate chips. I’ve found this one doesn’t travel in a travel mug well either, its very picky about what you brew it in.

Best Eggnog I ever had. I had a splitting headache all day, and then I drank a cup of this and it went away immediately. Apparently Rooibos tea promotes water retention.

yep. this is enough. no more of this one…today the oiliness on the top of the cup made me want to gag. I couldn’t actually finish this cup, so off it goes

mrs.stenhouse12

I feel you on this one lol, the oily gunk totally turned my stomach :(

Kittenna

I feel like I either must have been in a really good tea-mood when I tried this, or my batch was tastier than others… I’ll have to try it again, since I’ve seen so many very underwhelmed reviews since.

Sil

slimey, oily gross looking

Kittenna

Mine oddly wasn’t, and I was looking for sliminess. shrug

I bought a cup of this at the mall while I was walking around with my cute little baby.

Then when I went back, I decided to buy some, because I was pretty impressed with it.
I love eggnog. I thought DT did about the best job you could possibly do in translating something like eggnog to tea form. Considering what tea is – flavoured water.

I wonder if it would have been better as a black tea, something you could add milk to to get more of a creamy note?

But as someone who HATES LOATHES DESPISES normal rooibos, I am pleased to say green rooibos is not so bad. I didn’t notice this at all. Thankfully, no gross hay taste.

Just spices, a creamy note, the white chocolate helps.

I bought 50g and I will enjoy this as a caffeine free holiday treat!

I prefer green rooibos over the red as well. I don’t hate red rooibos, though, as I’ve found several different blends that I actually quite enjoy. But I’d prefer the green over the red … and honeybush over either one of those.

I can’ wait to try this!
And speaking of cute babies, mine is grabbing my hand so I can only type with the other. She wants to draw on my tablet and doesn’t understand why I won’t let her. :P

MissSholia

You can add milk to it, why not?

ohfancythat

I had this again last night, just as delicious.

I find the idea of adding milk weird though, it would just make it white, it doesn’t seem like a substantial enough tea to add milk to!

Cavo -Awww! Yeah my baby is constantly after my phone and iPad.

I stopped by my local DT for this tea and Santa’s Secret. This one didn’t smell like much to me in the store, but the concept seems awesome for the upcoming holiday season, so I got 25g to try.

At home, the dry smell is very much eggnog, complete with nutmeg and everything! So far quite promising. I brewed for 5 minutes with boiling water. Now, this is where it started to fall apart for me…sure, it smells like eggnog when brewed, but there is also a weird scent that is marring with the eggnog..it could be the green rooibos, or just a flavoring..it’s strong and a tad artificial. A bit stomach turning to me.

As for the flavor…yeah. It’s not you, tea, it’s me. The first sip was GAH overpowering weirdly hot eggnog-but-not-quite-eggnog flavor. Creamy and kind of spicy. I think what the problem is is that I tried it when it was quite hot. Eggnog isn’t generally served hot lol.

As the cup cools, the flavors mellow out to being a creamy cup of green rooibos with some strange spicing, nutmeg like. It does improve immensely as it cools in my opinion, but I’m still not sold on this. Creamy kind of artificial green rooibos is not quite my forte. I am a bit disappointed, because I usually LOVE green rooibos blends. But this one currently isn’t doing it for me.

Overall, not my favorite cup of tea. I will see if I can finish off the bag, if I get past that initial strong flavor it is better, but still not a favorite yet. I’ll have to see if it grows on me. No rating, as this is entirely personal taste interfering with the tea. Great concept, just not the right blend for me. Happy to have satisfied my curiosity though!

Ahhh, the Winter teas box has arrived from DT! First up, Eggnog. I absolutely fell in love with this tea at first smell. It has all the nutmeg and creamy vanilla flavor I was hoping for. I also may add that I had this in the new candy cane color change mug DT put out, so I’m sure that added to my excitement.

Oh nooooooo.. don’t tell me this. I am an eggnog freak and may need to order this even though I just ordered pumpkin chai a week or two ago. :P

lindsayb

haha I literally did that. I ordered Pumpkin Chai like 2 weeks ago (it was all I ordered) and here I got a huge box of stuff today. This is so worth it. I put a touch of whole milk in and put frothed milk on the top and made it a latte….so, so, so yummy

ladiesandthestamp

Hey I made it over to steepster see what you did to me? Now make sure you bring some eggnog home for me to try please<3

This just tastes like green rooibos with white chocolate chips.

That’s it.

Not terribly impressed, because it’s not eggnog, but it’s not bad for a white chocolate rooibos.

But the smell! Could you smell the eggnog?! That’s what got me.

OMGsrsly

Not really? IDK. It’s in the bag that’s going to Sil’s, so you can have it if you like.

Kittenna

Well, I have noticed inconsistency between batches from DT. Maybe yours was less deliciously spiced to begin with. I do agree that the flavour isn’t as good, though.

Aroma-wise, this tea is pretty much perfect – in fact, it smells more like eggnog than some eggnog I recently picked up. SO GOOD. Brewed up, it’s a bit weak, and the green rooibos base interferes a bit with the flavour (I think it would be better on a light green base like dragonwell), but it’s so nice to breathe in that delicious aroma from the hot cup. This might be a 25g purchase for me, just to have some around, but because it’s such a season-specific flavour, I don’t think I’d crave it overly often. (Besides, I have plenty of creamy teas, and I also picked up some Spiced Nog from Butiki, which might be more perfect. Also, I believe I got a bit of throat scratchiness from the rooibos and/or flavourings, which is not overly enjoyable.)

The chocolate left this cup quite cloudy so I feared that would translate into a thick, oily/scummy mouthfeel but luckily it did not. Instead this tea is creamy and rich and has a tasty dash of nutmeg to make it unique.

I took what is left of my sample and split it in half, half for a cold brew and half for a tea latte later. This review is for the cold brew.

I was hoping that maybe it was just because it was hot and I don’t tend to drink hot eggnog, maybe that was why I didn’t like it.

Cold, the green rooibos takes over. The white chocolate didn’t melt at all and you really just cannot taste anything but the rooibos. It’s a touch creamier, but that may just be the vanilla agave I sweetened it with. This tea is still a resounding no for me and it still isn’t any closer to being eggnog.

Kittenna

Because of the white chocolate, I don’t think this would work terribly well cold. It would probably just result in white floaters even if you did a chilled hot brew.
