From DAVIDsTEA

Mumbai’s the word

They’re colourful. They’re over the top. In a word, they’re epic. Nothing can quite compare to the sheer energy of Bollywood films. But we’ve tried to at least do them justice with this lively, colourful chai. It’s a delicately sweet black tea blend with all the warm, comforting flavour of a fresh spice cake. Not to mention the fun, vibrant pop of candy-coated fennel seeds, a classic Indian breath freshener. It’ll have you singing and dancing with the Bollywood greats in no time.

Ingredients: Black tea, fennel candy, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, pink peppercorns, natural ginger, vanilla and cinnamon flavouring*.

Mmm nice, light chai with sugar and milk. Great to sip in the evening.

Lowering my rating slightly, since I’ve sampled so many other awesome chai blends recently.

Grabbed a tiny bag of this when I was sick at the recommendation of the staffer. While ill, I found this really comforting and spicy. When I had a cup of it yesterday, I found it overly sweet and a bit cloying. Will have to try it again, as I have another few cups left to play with.

I drank this earlier and never got a chance to log it. This is one i was curious about and it come to me via the awesome Roswell Strange. Unfortunately, this only further proved how much I dislike chai teas. Seriously, this was a whole lot of fennel and spice and none of it was particularly pleasant. I tried adding milk but the only thing I liked in the sip was the milk itself and not the tea. Ultimately, the cup got dumped because I just couldn’t get through it. Well, now I know so I am grateful to Roswell Strange for the chance to try this tea.

Did you eat any of the straight candied fennel? To me that was the best part.

VariaTEA

I did not. Perhaps that is what I will do with the rest of the leaf :P

Mmmm candied fennel. I haven’t had this tea but I do love that.

Yum! This tea smells amazing, is very pretty, and tastes great!

It contains tiny fennel seed candies, which are fun and add sweetness. I’d eat the candies alone! The pink peppercorns can also clearly be smelled and tasted.

I steeped this for 5 min using boiling water. I didn’t add sugar or milk, but may try that next time. I really liked this as-is. I didn’t taste any bitterness.

I was opening a can of coconut milk to make a latte for my wife with Perfect Carlos, so I decided to make a latte as well. When I think latte, I think chai, so I grabbed for this tea and got the double whammy of a sipdown!

So this is…okay. The chai is overpowered by the coconut milk, which is sad. I may have messed this up, but I won’t be buying more to try and figure it out.

It’s definitely chai weather here today with these flurries out of nowhere (come back, mid 40’s weather). I couldn’t really figure out what I wanted when I got home from work today, I literally stared at my tea cabinet waiting for a sign or some tin to shout out “you want me”. I almost went for my favorite earl grey when I saw this little guy hiding out in the back. This one has a very dry leaf nose to it, which is usually not my favorite but the ginger and peppery kick made me keep sipping along. There are also these cute colorful pieces of fennel candy throughout that give it this very slight hint of sweetness. Overall, a very satisfying chai.

For fun, and because I’m making this in my little two-cupper, I’m trying this two ways. First, I’ll have a cup clear, and then doctored up the way I usually do chai. Yes, the second cup will be oversteeped, but it will have milk in it, so I assume that it’s a pretty fair trade.

The clear cup is not bad actually. Mild, sweet, and spiced. The fennel, while it doesn’t make me think of traditional chai, adds a nice flavour (and makes me think a little of pastry for some reason). The creaminess almost works parallel to the flavours with milk added, rather than completely blending. It’s an interesting sensation, but I thick I enjoy it. Really, it’s not bad either way.

A slightly sweet chai due to the fennel candies in the tea. Had it as a lattea in store to, but next time less agave syrup.

I am used to drink the Maharaja Chai/Samurai Chai blend from Teavana but I couldn’t get used to the idea of paying 18$ for 50g of tea. This is why I started a quest of finding a chai tasting mostly the same, but at a more reasonable price.

I was not looking for a chai where the cinnamon and the cloves are overwhelming (like those tea bags you buy at the grocery store), but a more «round taste» tea where all the flavors blend together. I smelled a lot of teas, and couldn’t find one that was satisfying me by the smell…until I found Bollywood Chai! And when I tasted it, It tasted heavenly good (my nose wasn’t wrong) ;)

This chai tea is just the perfect one for me! Not too sweet and not too spicy, but still has that warmth to it. It is highly comparable to the blend from Teavana, but less sweet, which I find is a good thing!

So if you’re looking for a chai where all the spices are well blended and where you can find a little sweetness (maybe the vanilla + candied fennels?), I definitely recommend this one :)
