From DAVIDsTEA

Pie in the sky

When it comes to dreaming up new teas, sometimes inspiration just randomly strikes. It usually happens in the middle of a really great dessert. So you can probably imagine how this decadent flavour came to be. We’ll give you a hint: it involved a chocolate banana cream pie. We tried out dozens of blends before we found the perfect one – a rich, chocolatey black tea blend with pieces of ripe banana and creamy white chocolate. It tastes like a dream come true.

Ingredients: Black tea, cocoa nibs, banana pieces, white chocolate, cocoa powder.

Price: $7.00 per 50g

I got this as a sample sometime last year, and am only having it now. Dry, the sweet dry banana smell is prominent, but steeped, this is very chocolatey! Perfect for a cool windy winter morning. Very enjoyable.

Thanks to Stephanie for sending me a sample!

The leaves (dry and wet) smelled of banana and a bit of chocolate – like banana dipped in melted chocolate. Surprisingly, the flavor of the liquor was bitter, and the banana was weaker than I anticipated. Even when I brewed another first infusion with a lower steeping time (about a minute less) the tea was still bitter. The second infusion tasted better: I let the leaves steep for a bit longer than the recommended alloted time for the first infusion (for compensation), and the flavor was less bitter and the banana and chocolate stood out more. Even then it was only alright at best.

I had high expectations because I love banana/chocolate teas, but this one isn’t for me unfortunately.

Stephanie

Bummer that you didn’t like it. This is why we sample though, at least you didn’t purchase it and then dislike it! :)

KiwiDelight

I really wanted to! Hope the same thing doesn’t happen with Watermelon Xylophone – sounds too awesome.

Stephanie

You won’t get any bitterness from the Watermelon, I’m sure! Funny how everyone’s palates are a little bit different.

KiwiDelight

Tea is more interesting this way :D

Another sample from ozli, who has done a great job doubling my tea collection with all the samples she has sent me!

I used the entire package to make a 12oz cup but I wish I had held a little back to experiment with. I love the banana chocolate aroma. I really like how it tastes too, but it’s just slightly astringent and I’m not sure if a shorter steep time or a splash of cream is all I need to make this 90+.

Maybe I’ll try it again if they bring it back next winter!

I had four perfect cups of this when I only had a sample amount. My tin has been lackluster so far, however. I’m extremely disappointed with the discrepancy. Maybe I had more chocolate and banana in the sample bag..

Ozli

It’s a winter-only one, too?? At least I ordered a tin of Cocomint. :D

TeaLady441

It’s part of the winter collection so they may pull it from stores in the spring, but I think you can still buy those ones online!

This is ok, I am not the biggest fan if banana in tea. I will certainly have no problem finishing off my sample size, but I don’t think I would purchase more. Rate in the low 80s somewhere. My phone won’t let me make selections for rating, time, or temp which is annoying

I got a sample of this from Aimee in a swap…thank you Aimee!!

When I first started getting into tea I would peruse David’s site and always saw this particular tea, but I would never remember to buy it. I am so pleased that I finally got to try it!

I brewed it up according to direction on packet. 5 minutes near boiling.

I usually try to drink my tea’s without any additions, to try to see if I like it without anything else. This tea, on the first sip I got watery chocolate. So I thought, I need to bump it up with additions. Which is ok…I prefer not to do that, but some tea’s require it.

I added creamer and sugar. AAAAhhhhh…much better. I don’t get much of the banana flavour, but that’s ok. What I got from this tea was a light chocolate flavour. I don’[t usually like chocolate tea’s due to the weak taste, but after the addition of cream and sugar, it was pretty tasty.

Nxtdoor

Too bad. I love banana flavoured things. Maybe now I can stop fantasizing about it!

I love banana too!! Artificial or natural…I read other reviews on this one and they got banana, sadly :(( I didn’t.

Aimee Popovacki

lol i always steep it for a reallly long time, and usually add a little almond milk.. it is quite weak ..

Thank you to Stephanie for including this little sample in our swap. I was really tempted to try this as I love anything banana and seeing as chocolate banana is my favorite combination. Sadly… I was not a big fan of it. I am glad I got to try this though. The smell was definitely that of chocolate banana, the taste however was weak and tasted mostly of old banana:/. I did add sugar after and then milk after a few more sips…only masked the banana flavor and brought out the white chocolate. I have a serving left of this maybe ill go nuts a try it as an iced latte. Now that sounds intriguing. :D

Stephanie

Oh well, probably for the best you didn’t love it since it is discontinued and all!

BrewTEAlly Sweet

ha ha maybe it was a sign. Because if i did end up loving it, i would have been let down knowing I could not buy it. ha ha. Thank you for the sample!

Stephanie

No prob. Hope you find some of the other selections more enjoyable :)

This was one of the free samples from my David’s tea order.

Steep notes: 2 tsp. leaf, 1 cup water, no additives, below parameters.

I definitely get chocolate- maybe banana if I look really hard, but it is not as strong as the chocolate in the scent. The taste is the same – all I get is a chocolate tea, maybe some creaminess from the banana.

Eh – not enough complexity, or enough banana, for me.

That is really interesting! I got no chocolate! Only banana!!!

JoonSusanna

So weird – I’m wondering if maybe it just depends on how much chocolate is in the sample? And if there were any banana pieces – I’m not really remembering seeing a whole lot of those, now that I think about it…

Not a bad tea, but why did they have to add the chocolate? My dream pie definitely is more whipped cream and less chocolate based. The banana notes are lovely and as a latte it blends up well, but I’m not going to be restocking. I’m kind of getting tired of most chocolate teas, especially those from Davids, and this one isn’t anywhere near as good as Read My Lips or Cookie Dough. So farewell, my dream pie. I hope to meet you in earnest one day.

Plunkybug

I will never get tired of chocolate teas. :P

Sipdown 3!

After drinking this, I really want to try more banana teas. I’m not a huge chocolate tea fan, but the combination of banana and chocolate definitely works for me. The scent of the dry leaves reminded me of dessert. It smelled like the overripe bananas I use for banana bread with a hint of chocolate.

The banana flavor did not disappoint and the chocolate was subtle enough for me to still enjoy it. I wasn’t so crazy about the base, and I thought it lacked the creaminess of banana cream pie. I think dairy would pair really well with this blend,. I’d love to try it as a latte, especially with a touch of cinnamon.

Thanks to Marcel Duchamp for sharing!

This is one of the teas I had my cousin pick up for me. I didn’t think I let it steep more than 3 mins, but there is quite a bit of astringency.
Just behind that astringency is a delicious ripe banana taste, with a touch of chocolate & creamyness.
This is really good, I added a touch of rock sugar to kill the astringency & it did without sweetening the tea.
Another one to add to my purchase list.
