From DAVIDsTEA

Maté with a twist

Need a little help getting up in the morning? So did we – until we tried waking up to this sunny maté blend, with lemongrass, lemon myrtle, lemon zest and pretty yellow calendula petals. It’s light, smooth and refreshingly citrusy, with a welcome energy boost from green yerba maté. So steep yourself a little sunshine – it might just make you a morning person.

Organic: green maté, lemongrass, lemon myrtle, lemon peel, calendula flowers.

This one has a strong lemongrass flavour with a little bit of citrus. I can’t really taste the orange flavour. I love lemongrass in food, but maybe not so much in tea. I used this tea to add flavour to a soup broth for an asiatic taste, it was good!

I think I may have steeped this one too long or used too much. I filled my 16oz with 4 “regular” tsp, hot water, and steeped for 6 minutes (the recommendation is 4-7 minutes). It tastes horrid! I’m going to try and choke it down but it really tastes like drinking lemon peel …bleh. I wish I had some sweetener:( I’ll adjust my rating down the road b/c the previous time I’ve had this it hasn’t been that bad.

Simply The Zest wasn’t quite the best!

This was my second mate tea, and having only Cocoa Canela to compare it to it was hard for Simply The Zest to come out on top, I mean not only do I have a sweet tooth but I am addicted to chocolate! Now this doesn’t mean Simply The Zest is a bad tea, it’s acutally a really delicious tea, even more so if you like lemon.

Dry the tea leaves are a vast rainbow of colours and sizes and on the nose it smells like lemon for sure, I hear people talking about the scent of the Mate coming through, but this is something I can’t distinguish I hate to admit it but I do not know what plain old Mate smells like. While steeping the tea has an aroma that strangely reminds of neo-citron, glad it certainly doesn’t have a similar taste!

The final beverage is a nice light golden tea, with a delightful lemon scent to it, for me it required two teaspoons of sugars, as I like citrus but I am not a fan the overly tartness of heavy citrus, especially lemon. Once it got the green light from my taste buds I thoroughly enjoy this tea, perfect morning pick me up for those that do not indulge in coffee. Stay far AWAY if overly citrus drinks are not up your alley as this one will be too much for you.

Umm…how should I put this. I don’t mind lemon as a fruit. However, when it is combined with tea, it taste strange. The lemon flavor jumps in front of every other ingredients. Makes me feels like just drinking lemon water.

This one is no different. And the second steep was terrible.

If you like lemon and all other things related to lemon, this is a tea for you.

I enjoyed this, it was a little bitter and a little tart but that may have been the steep time.

I tried this out for 2 reasons – the citrus flavour, and the fact that mate was touted as a possible caffeine alternative. The blend smells lemony and refreshing, however the tea itself is quite bland and does not have a whole lot of flavour on its own. I felt a bit more refreshed after drinking it but not for very long, which I attribute more to the psychologial boost from my partial-ness to lemon rather than to the mate caffeine content itself.

I had this today at a friend’s house with lemon in it. It was super citrusy, with maybe a hint of mate earthiness peeking out.

Okay. This is where I should start off by admitting I was up far too late last night, and although I was able to fall asleep quickly, it was not the most sound of sleeps. (Pleasant enough, just not solid.) As a result, I am tired, and consequentially in the mood for a high caffeine pick me up.

I will also admit that, as I’m finishing up a package of this tea, I used a bit (1/2 tsp?) of plain mate to boost it up to a full tbsp for my little tea pot, so this may colour my experience a bit. The lemon, however, came through very well despite that. My issue is more that although the lemon is pleasant, mate may be better suited for a bolder flavour than lemon.

I have a feeling that, according to the song the title may be rated on, the tea is meant to be better than all the rest. (Either that, or I just think too much in song. Both are equally likely, in all honesty.) I’m not sure if I quite agree with that, but it’s not bad for what it is, either.

Again, another lemon tea for me to try… I’m not sure if I liked this or Main Squeeze better. The lemon taste is very strong and it definitely perked me up!
