A stunning experimental white tea from our friend Mr. Tang’s small ocean-side family tea farm.

In the spring of 2016, Mr. Tang visited tea forager Hunter in the wild mountains of Zhenghe, Fujian, where white teas originated from. He was inspired by the pureness of white teas and when he returned home, he decided to experiment with making white teas from his small family tea farm. Fresh leaves are handpicked in October and are then crafted following traditional methods of natural withering and sun-dried for 48-60 hours.

The exquisitely beautiful tea blossoms are meticulously harvested by hand from a small grove of semi-wild tea trees in November, when the tea trees come into bloom. Each year, only a very limited amount of tea blossoms are harvested and crafted into this amazing white tea.

White tea is the most “natural” tea – no direct heat is applied to the fresh tea leaves during processing, thus preserving as much of the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and living compounds in the tea leaves as possible. As white tea ages, its medicinal benefits increases; as the saying goes in the old days, “three years a medicine, seven years a treasure”.

This tea is sweet, earthy and gentle with hints of honey and green plums.

A really interesting blend with lightly floral notes and some light vegetal white tea flavour (like bai mu dan and other delicately vegetal whites). Very smooth. the brew is very light but is aromatic and smells slightly of honey, flowers, and green tea.

Decided to start with this one because it was the closest and sounded interesting. Tea blossoms are something I don’t think I have tried before. A slightly spicy flavor. Slight black pepper. But mainly very earthy. Green wood. A fresh plank of wood. Slight mulch, the plain kind that was delivered yesterday. Or maybe a few days ago. The aroma is a bit of barnyard, a bit of composting leaves, and a bit of a slightly sweet mystery note. The mouthfeel is smooth. While the leaves steep they appear to be freshly plucked off the tree and laid in my cup. It is pliable but not easily broken like the majority of tea one drinks.

Preparation: Gongfu
Tasting Note: First off, this is a really pretty wet leafed tea. I didn’t steep it in a clear vessel but I should have, the tea blossoms and brown leaves have a beautiful contrast.

Actual tasting note: I have never had a Laoshan white before but it reminds me of another tea I have had maybe Gong Mei? This tea is also herbaceous and a little sweeter than that. There are some faint floral and earthy notes as well. I will admit this is only the first steep so I will probably edit this as the steeps progress.
Second steep got a little more mineral-y I think.
Ran out of time to steep more.
