Compagnie & Co Day 15

I must have had speculoos at some point. Either way, a cookie butter tea sounds wonderful! I steeped the 2 g sachet in 250 ml of 190F water for 3, 5, and 7 minutes.

The dry aroma reminds me of cookies, with pastry, molasses, and spices. Smelling the steeped tea, I know I’ve had speculoos before and that this is a good match. I get notes of cookie, butter, molasses, and spices, cut with some malt and tannins from the black tea. The next steep is even more buttery and cookie-like. The final steep has some tannins, but is still pleasant.

This was a decadent way to wind down yesterday evening. The flavour can get cloying at times, but it’s a good imitation of spiced cookies and is perfect for the season.

Sipdown (3038)!

This tea is Speculoos (aka “cookie butter”) flavoured and is very interesting, although I don’t know that I would call it very good. Sorta just fine. Weirdly, it starts off very bland tasting in a way that it kind of shocking for a tea blend. It’s a fleeting moment of thinking “Oh, did I just drink hot water” before then being hit with a mellow combination of warming spices and an almost almond-y flour/pastry sort of note. Because I have cookie butter in my head already it’s easy to interpret the combination of ginger and cinnamon and cookie/biscuit-like. However, I’m not sure mentally I would close that gap without knowing the context of the blend prior.

The most interesting part for me is the finish, which is quite peppery. To be fair, there is pepper in Speculoos so I don’t exactly feel like it’s off base for the profile. It’s just quite distinct, and it’s not exactly common to taste pepper so clearly in more decadent and dessert-leaning tea profiles such as this one.

Mixed feelings on this one overall, but happy to have tried it since cookie butter is one of those flavours that’s everywhere right now in the cafe/quick service space. Very trendy.

Pepper is an interesting note and ingredient, although for a speculoos cookie tea I would’ve expected cardamom to fare better!

Roswell Strange

The spices/ratios definitely change depending on the brand, but typically cookie butter contains cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, white pepper, cardamom, and clove. Occasionally you’ll see people describe speculoos as having an almost citrusy note to it, and that’s actually often the cardamom people are picking up on ;)

2024 sipdown no. 55 | This also works for September 22 – Fall Equinox: drink a tea for the new season. :)

This tea is strongly scented (S&V still beats it out though), and the scent comes across really clear in taste. There’s some cookie-ness, cinnamon, and hints of brown sugar. This is a tasty tea that doesn’t come across cloyingly, and it resteeps fairly well. For some reason, I found myself thinking of Brioche while drinking this — it seems to be at that level of quality.

Thanks for the opportunity to try another great tea Cameron!

ashmanra

Which S&V tea does it remind you of? I haven’t had very many of theirs and there are several that look worthy of trying.

Cameron B.

I have a lot more if you would like it, ha ha!

Courtney

ashmanra whoops — just how strongly scented this one is reminds me of all S&V teas (and how they must be aired out prior to being put into a cupboard) :P

Ah, okay! I understand!

Sipdown! (17 | 120)

This was a speculoos-flavored black tea, but most of the time it reminded me more of Almond Sugar Cookie from S&V. Buttery cookie with toasted flaked almond notes and just a touch of spice. There were a couple of times when the stars aligned and it was pure speculoos in a mug, but alas, this last cup is not one of those.

Still tasty, but would’ve liked it to be consistently speculoos!

Oooh, what is a speculoos, he asked himself. And then he asked uncle Google. And now he wants to bake speculoos, per the YT video from ATK. (Jeopardy music plays here).

Cameron B.

Ha ha, Biscoff is the common brand that you may have had!

Good speculoos are fantastic treat… but hard to get :D

TeaEarleGreyHot

Getting the right sugar was going to be tricky for me. But then I found speculoos for sale at Aldi and grabbed ’em. Yum! And, they taste of “Buttery cookie with toasted flaked almond notes and just a touch of spice” exactly like the tea Cameron describes LoL with a little caramel flavor, too. I luv crunchy cookies! Dunno if they’re up to Martin’s standard of goodness, but good enough for me! ;-)

TeaEarleGreyHot

Although, these chocolate layered Butter Keks are pretty stellar, too. Same store. =:)

Martin Bednář

Well, Aldi is German store if I am not mistaken. And I would not be surprised if they import European goodies for people across the pond :) .

ashmanra

You are correct, Martin! Aldi and Lidl are German and sell us delightful cookies over here! I need to make a trip to Aldi soon und viele Kekse kaufen!

TeaEarleGreyHot

The package of speculoos says its from the Netherlands! Yes, @Martin, the Aldi here in the US are a discount grocery, owned by the Aldi Sud company, just like in CZ. The other company, Aldi Nord, owns another chain in the US called Trader Joes, which is rather a premium grocery. @Ashmanra, its cool that you’ve got access to a Lidl store; I have never been inside one and their US expansion hasn’t yet reached my area.

Having drunk this I can see why it has become a classic at Compagnie Coloniale. It is pretty successful at coming off as a spiced butter cookie with a hint of nut which has been my experience of Speculoos cookies when I have had them. The flavouring is not overhanded and some may find it subtle. Do not overleaf it or the fruitiness in the base tea can hide the subtleties in the flavouring. The base does provide a nice sense of biscuits breadiness which highlights the flavouring. The flavour notes start with caramelized butter cookie and vanilla, the stone fruit of the base tea, spice which is well mixed with nutmeg and cinnamon a bit more up front with a bit of ginger, and a coolness afterwards suggesting Cloves and cardamom without a strong sense of flavour. The base tea does not become bitter or overly astringent if you over steep it but the fruitiness can overpower the butter cookie notes. This company uses a steaming process to scent their black teas and the result is a leaf that is pretty shiny and a little wet looking. I’ve found that these teas tend to keep their flavouring well if you don’t get through them quickly from my small sample size of two that I have had from them before. There is a touch of toasted almond as well. The tea resteeps well and I am finding that the flavour notes often become more distinct in the second steep of this company’s teas. A nice warming tea for fall and winter that pulls off its flavouring well.

As a side note shipping from France was very quick and my order was posted within a day of submission. The refill packaging is not very scent concealing and if only buying a few teas it is probably worth it to buy tins which are double lidded and quite nice.

Yummm I love speculoos. I’ll have to add this to the wishlist to check out later!
