From Butiki Teas

Wait a minute, what is a CTC (cut tear curl) tea doing at Butiki Teas? This particular CTC is malty, brisk, and delivers a lot of flavor. Our Grandpa’s Anytime Tea was named after Arthur Njuguna Komo, the oldest tea farmer in the world, who is now 113 years old. This black tea originates from the Kamunyaka settlement in the Thika District in Kenya. The rich red liquor of this tea produces chocolate, baked bread, banana, oak, and grapefruit notes, has a weighty mouth feel, and is lightly astringent. We recommend following steeping directions carefully as this tea can become very strong quickly. Grandpa’s Anytime Tea is best served piping hot.

Recommended Brew Time: 1 minute
Recommended Amount: 1 level teaspoon of tea for 8oz of water
Recommended Temperature: 212 F

Still working on Butiki sipdowns…

This sample comes from Stephanie and is from around Christmas! Shame on me for not getting to it more efficiently; ironically I just kept finding that it wasn’t the right time to brew it up, despite the name…

If I’ve learned anything from class though it’s that a CTC can really surprise you and even though they’re less complex/nuanced they can still have good flavor. In particular, the Kenyan CTC I tried this last week really gave me the motivation to finally try this one – which also happens to be a Kenyan CTC; so I have high hopes! About 90% of tea Kenya produces is cut, tear, curl for commercial use – and if Stacy thought this one was worthy of being sold at Butiki I need to check my snobbery at the door and give it a taste.

Honestly…

I think I prefer the one we tasted in class more; it was a little more fruity with very nice raisin/lemon peel notes. This isn’t bad though – it’s got a bit of a medium astringency, though it’s not very lingering so I’d call that aspect really pleasant. The flavor is mostly malt, with a little bit of a citrus-like note. Quite brassy, and full bodied. To be fair, I’m drinking it lukewarm though and I think this would be greatly improved with a higher temperature.

Reserving my rating until I get a chance to try it “properly”.

Possibly not the smartest choice at this time of night, but I’m thinking it’ll be tasty.

EGGNOG TEA LATTE. I REPEAT, EGGNOG TEA LATTE.

Mmm…

You have caught my attention :P

LOL. You KEEP on POSTING about eggnog lattes and so I’m trying them all now! Blueberry Rooibos now, Apple Custard next… So much milk, though. I should have bought the almond or soy nog.

Fjellrev

Off-topic, but are the almond or soy dogs actually good?

OMGsrsly

I haven’t tried the almond, and the soy is better with rum in it. I find it’s not as flavoured as the dairy ones. Definitely a different texture.

I really appreciated them when I couldn’t have any dairy, but I do prefer regular milk.

Fjellrev

Stupid autocorrect. I can see the spices go well with almond milk. I keep meaning to try it, but I always end up grabbing the dairy.

OMGsrsly

(This didn’t post) “Not as flavoured” = not as much vanilla-nutmeg-cream flavour. You know, that eggnoggy flavour.

A soft drizzle has been falling all morning…the horse, goats, chickens, cats (even the neighbors cats and the local ferals) have been tended to….now it’s my turn. The grey misty rain requires a familiar tea this morning, like the favorite sweatshirt I have on. Butiki has been sold out of this tea for quite some time, but it was one of my initial “frenzy” teas….you know…where you taste a tea, fall in lust with it and immediately buy a boatload of it because you’re afraid it will be unavailable when you run out of it. Usually that’s not how it goes, because you find something super similar or a bit better……USUALLY. This tea, like crimson horizon, has been irreplaceable for me. I don’t think I’ve met a more round mouthfeel, perfect balance of astringency and strength and malty/grainy baked bread goodness. I never got the banana or grapefruit note from this tea as mentioned in the description, but no matter. It doesn’t need it. This insanely delicious CTC needs only a 1 minutes steep for something close to perfection on a gorgeous dreary day when what is in your cup is the only sunshine you’ll get……or need. Luckily, I have a boatload of it.

this was a pleasant surprise that immediately brews up strong and dark, and smells enough like a standard black with the dry leaf having a lightly fresh kick. mix some of this with Butiki’s Premium Taiwanese Assam and you could have Tazo’s Awake! the flavor is even better than the aroma lets on.

the mouthfeel is in a word: THICK!

unlike anything i’ve experienced in a tea before. and it warms you right up! i’ve had this twice already and have gotten the same revitalizing burst of energy each time.

i really enjoy the texture and strength. while not necessarily looking to be catapulted into hyperfocus at 8pm, this Kenyan CTC decided i should be. if you choose to drink this straight, i applaud your audacity! of course, i am not that brave. my additives were 2 tsps of brown sugar (was it 2 or 1?), a dash of cinnamon sugar (which i normally put in my coffee) & plenty of Silk soy milk to round out the flavor. the resultant color is a luscious, creamy caramel.

this is the tea for coffee drinkers most definitely (and i am one). even the look of it is like finely ground coffee!! which is a very comforting thing for me.
