From Bitterleaf Teas

Made using the huang pian from our 2016 WMD ancient tree raw puer, Alter Ego is arguably one of the best bang-for-your-buck teas out there. This tea retains all of the best qualities of our WMD raw puer: Complexity, depth, sweetness, high fragrance, and of course an immediate cha qi/energy.

Huang pian material consists of the larger and older yellow leaves that are sorted out when processing raw puer. The result of pressing these leaves is often a tea that is somewhat softer and sweeter, not to mention considerably more affordable than its fresh-growth counterpart. While this tea can be considered a reflection of our WMD, it is still a powerful and full-flavoured raw puer in its own right – absolutely not your typical huang pian.

This curious little parcel inhabits the uncanny valley of the tea spectrum. It’s a huangpian, but it does not have the relaxing nature of 24K, being a punchier example of the style. However, it doesn’t quite have the full spectrum of nuances that a normal leaf tea would (hopefully) entail.

The result is a very fine drink that I have no idea when I would choose to reach for. 24K could be splwndid when wanting tea in a late session, as at least to me it’s very soothing and unlikely to keep me up. A tea as robust as Alter Ego would be better during the day – but it just doesn’t have the flair I want from my limited availability of full-on gongfu sessions.

I may try this Western (gasp!) as a work tea… but being a brick, it’ll require prep ahead of time, which doesn’t generally fit the nature of my work day tea sessions.

A fine brew… but a square peg to my proverbial round hole.

I promise never to refer to my round hole henceforth. My apologies.

Bitterleaf

This could be a tea that’s worth boiling or dropping in a thermos in your case. It takes a little tinkering to find the right leaf ratio, but holds up well through endured heat.

Cwyn

I was gonna suggest accompaniment to porn, but maybe you should send the rest to me.

Rasseru

Lol Cwyn. I didnt get the joke at first

For a key to my rating scale, check out my bio.

Amazing value ($0.10/g) and surprising complexity. Because it’s made with the 黄片 or older leaves of the tea plant, it’s less punchy with more sweetness and viscosity. Overall very sweet and aromatic but with some notes of moss, cedar, oak, menthol, etc. to keep things interesting. Highly recommend.

I was blown away at the quality of this tea, especially for the price. These bricks weigh 250g, and for the price of the brick its one hell of a steal. If anything, this tea is probably one of the best values of tea that I’ve seen all year. Sometimes with tea, you sacrifice quality for price. However, Bitter Leaf Tea’s did an amazing job at sourcing a tea that doesn’t sacrifice anything. Yet again this is another offering from Bitter Leaf Teas that won’t leave you disappointed.
