From Bitterleaf Teas

Considered the highest point in Xishuangbanna (滑竹/huazhu = smooth bamboo, 梁子/liangzi = ridge), we initially took note of this area when passing by enroute to Naka in 2021, driving under a long, dreamy canopy of towering bamboo. Already behind schedule due to some navigational issues, we weren’t able to stop and explore on that day, but we committed to making this one of our stops for 2022. This year we were not disappointed at all.

This tea is a continuation of our love for all things Mengsong-area. Born from an environment similar to our Plum Beauty, this unsurprisingly tea has a lot in common with its aforementioned neighbors of Naka and Mengsong, which includes a nice balance of mineral sweetness, kuwei/pleasant bitterness, and notes of stone fruit. If we were to get even more specific, a slight peach quality can be picked up, at least in its fresh state. There is a delicate and smooth texture, making this an enjoyable tea on multiple levels.

As with several other teas we’ve offered, this one highlights the impact and importance of a clean, natural environment and offers an excellent experience for both new and experienced drinkers.

Picking period: Pre-April 10

An interesting pu-erh! I got these dragon balls as samples from my recent BLT order, and while this tea lacks in some areas, it makes up in others. Beautiful leaves and vibrant liquor with a holy truck load finish where the astringency in the mouth lets way to a tsunami of juiciness. Decent aftertaste with decent cha-qi as well. The flavour however was a bit lacking in complexity and strength, and the aroma had the same problem too. Slightly thin texture with a subpar longevity and average character makes this tea decent but not something to rave about.

Gongfu!

Steeped up a session of 2022 Natural Habitat raw puer last night! Wasn’t sure what to expect from this sheng as it’s from an area that I’m less versed in, but in the first two or three steeps I was met with a thick liquor absent of astringency with a prominent note of the sweet syrup from canned cocktail peaches. Not cloying though. Just saturated. In fact, this distinct stonefruit note was actually swiftly followed with just enough bitterness to pull the sweetness back and balance out the profile. Never unpleasantly bitter though; it really just felt like a very good “checks and balances” system for the profile of those early steeps. From there I felt like the session got a lot less interesting, but it was still a pleasant puer and something I fully steeped out over the rest of the night.
