From American Tea Room

This exquisite oolong is a high-elevation Chinese Ti Kwan Yin (“Iron Goddess of Mercy”) variation that was hand-processed with six unique methods to create a one-of-a-kind flavor. It is made in small batches and is extremely limited.

The beautiful leaves are blue-green, tightly rolled and lightly oxidized, but their appearance gives no indication of the flavors they generate. Despite the fact that the leaves contain no actual milk, their aroma is similar to the milky sweetness of Chinese milk candies (like White Rabbit). They brew into a clear, pale, canary-yellow infusion with the unmistakable aroma of pure lactose sugar. Astounding notes of evaporated milk, dulce de leche and vanilla-infused cream fade into a lingering, sweet-green aftertaste, a bit like a lightly spiced Kashmiri Chai.

Like other tightly rolled oolongs (such as our Dong Ding, for example), our Milk Oolong withstands multiple infusions. The second infusion is more verdant and less sweet than the first, with an intriguing mineral complexity.

At American Tea Room, David (our CEO) and Roshni (in sales) consider Milk Oolong to be one of their very favorite teas.

So wonderful, this tea! Dry leaf aroma: pleasantly fruity, something akin to passionfruit, plus yummy creaminess. Wet leaf aroma was similar. The brew was fairly light, leaves unfurling very quickly, and tasted very close to the scent of the leaves. Love the creamy flavor, and slight fruitiness that does not overpower at all, adding to the sweetness of the tea. So delicious I’m tempted to try brewing just a touch longer next time, to see if I can increase the flavors slightly without overbrewing.

Having this again out of my sample. First steep was 2.5min, 1 tsp to 16oz 175F water. Definitely a more mineral taste. Second steep was 3min. Sweeter, less mineral, but I’m just absent-mindedly sipping it and not getting any “ooh this is nice tea” feelings. Glad I only ordered a sample. I also don’t get any creamy/milkiness in the sip.

This steep is different from the first but just as good. It’s more vegetal, almost like a green, and the mineral notes are stronger, but there’s a slight milky sweetness at the end that was present in the first cup. So far it really resteeps well.

I think I was spoiled by the Capital Teas version. You other milk oolong fans know just how special this tea can be, but this one didn’t quite live up to it – but to be fair, it is FAR better than many I’ve tried. This is still quite good. It’s a tough order to describe it, but to compare with Capital’s, this was just less flavorful overall.

I love this so much, but it’s so expensive. It doesn’t seem to keep as well as my other ATR teas too :( Not as creamy now. Great to make butter tea with.
