From American Tea Room

This exquisite oolong is a high-elevation Chinese Ti Kwan Yin (“Iron Goddess of Mercy”) variation that was hand-processed with six unique methods to create a one-of-a-kind flavor. It is made in small batches and is extremely limited.

The beautiful leaves are blue-green, tightly rolled and lightly oxidized, but their appearance gives no indication of the flavors they generate. Despite the fact that the leaves contain no actual milk, their aroma is similar to the milky sweetness of Chinese milk candies (like White Rabbit). They brew into a clear, pale, canary-yellow infusion with the unmistakable aroma of pure lactose sugar. Astounding notes of evaporated milk, dulce de leche and vanilla-infused cream fade into a lingering, sweet-green aftertaste, a bit like a lightly spiced Kashmiri Chai.

Like other tightly rolled oolongs (such as our Dong Ding, for example), our Milk Oolong withstands multiple infusions. The second infusion is more verdant and less sweet than the first, with an intriguing mineral complexity.

At American Tea Room, David (our CEO) and Roshni (in sales) consider Milk Oolong to be one of their very favorite teas.

This is my first time writing comments on Steepster. I ordered this tea online based on the great reviews here and this tea lives up to them. Delightfully creamy and rich – I was able to get six steeping from a single serving. Not the cheapest of teas but if you factor in how many great cups you can get it is really reasonably priced.

I just did a blind taste test between a sample I got of this Milk Oolong from American Tea room, with “Milk Oolong Full-Leaf” from republic of tea. I brewed both following the instructions that came with the American Tea room tea (2 min @ 175). A while ago I felt like they had very similar flavors and indeed when I did the blind test (with the help of my fiancee) my two favorites out of 4 cups from the two teas were one from each! I do like this tea quite a bit, but since the republic of tea version is so similar, and $13 for 3.5oz rather than $39 for 2oz, I’ll stick with the republic of tea version!

I have tried a few of these and it always sounds good, but I never really like Milk Oolong. I keep thinking that I just haven’t found the right one, so I tried this one after reading such good reviews, but honestly I’m still not liking it. It has a milky flavor, but it really tastes like spoiled milk to me. Am I the only one that feels that way?

American Tea Room

Did you get this tea directly from us? It is a shame you cannot appreciate this tea. As you can see by the vast majority of other reviews found this to be a delightful tea, but then again it is not for everyone – especially if your tastes run more toward flavored teas or herbal infusions. If you did get this directly from us we are more than happy to send you something that might be more to your liking.

That’s really cool of you. I got it from a friend of mine who wasn’t crazy about it either. It’s probably just us because I see other people like it.

The much talked about milk oolong has brought intrigue and conversation to my work place. Brought in by one individual who stumbled upon it, has caused many others to scramble at the end of the season to purchase lump sum before the next season. It’s smooth, creamy, buttery aroma was equally matched by the familiar taste, that most equated to sweented condensed milk – but with soft subtle overtures. LOVE!

I’ve never had a Milk Oolong before but I think I’m hooked! It’s milky, creamy, smooth, ahhhhhhhh love it. I steeped it according to the instructions on the package, then steeped it 2 more times, each time adding an extra minute. It really does smell like rabbit candy!

This oolong’s a lot milkier than the Della Terra Creme de la Creme. First impression is I like this one more, or at least, it’s much easier for an oolong newbie like me to take—it’s got less mysterious funky saltiness, just a clean, milky, sweet but not decayed aroma and taste, and a smoother vegetal note at the end.

Really lovely. Subtle green tea taste. Peaches and cream scent – not so much of a butter smell. Much smoother than others I’ve tried.

Sipdown no. 10 of 2019 (no. 498 total). A sample.

I made two big pitchers of cold tea at the same time. One was the Premium Steap Milk Oolong only, the other was about half Premium Steap Milk Oolong and the rest a couple of samples including this one.

There were only two spoons full of this left in the sample packet, but its influence is very, very apparent in the flavor of the cold tea. The batch made with this is much more buttery, and in a sort of bothersome way that makes me wonder if it had its flavor enhanced (I can’t remember who the helpful person was who commented on one of my notes about this).

In any case, though it was a small amount, its impact on the overall flavor of the cold brew was mighty. And not in a particularly positive way.

The company had a mega sale, so I took advantage to finally try a few blends I’ve wanted to for a while. They were incredibly generous this time and actually granted me a sample of this from request. It would have costed $10 for a sample otherwise.

The high reviews from a few key people perked my interest, and since this milk oolong used Tie Guan Yin for the base, I was naturally intrigued. Brewing it up at 2 minutes, it was creamy and floral. The natural orchid florals of the oolong blended fairly naturally with the buttery cream flavor. It has a light and well rounded balance of savory and crispness overall. So think flower creamer leaning towards condensed milk, though it is not as sweet as other milk oolongs. It definitely is far from fake.

I got three brews out of it with the third leaning more on its Tie Guan Yin qualities. I would normally rate this tea between a 85-90 because it definitely suits my preferences, but the megalithic price is the main thing that I hold against this tea. Great quality, yes, but I’ve had other Tie Guan Yin’s that had some of the complexities this had for much cheaper. It was actually comparable to What-Cha’s Winter Tie Guan Yin which was fairly creamy on its own, though a step less creamy then this. I do love the cream flavor combo for this tea and I am very glad to have tried it, but I cannot justify the price for this tea which is why I rate this one lower. I doubt that the profile would change too much gong fu.
