From Adagio Custom Blends, Amy Zen

Floral, light and sweet tasting with a bit of nuance in the rose flavour, this is my own personal favourite of my Firefly teas. Perfect hot and mixed with just a small amount of sugar, or iced and drunk on a warm summer day. Seriously, this tea is delicious, you can’t go wrong with it.

Inspired by Joss Whedon’s Firefly.

Created by: Amy Zen

Ingredients: black tea, green tea, rose petals, rose flavor, natural vanilla flavor, orange peels, natural bergamot flavor, blue cornflowers, marigold flowers

Steeping Instructions: Steep at 205° for 3 minutes.

This was one of the first teas from Adagio that I got, and honestly, my geekiness begged me to get this one. River is one of my favorite characters although they did not develop her as fully as some of the others. There were facets of her personality that I could connect with oddly enough, and I admit that I enjoyed the crap out of how she fought the Reavers in Serenity.
Anyway, I got it last year as a sample for while I was up at school. I have had green and black blends before, and they are a hit or miss for me. Blending black and green normally result in a really mellowed out tasting black tea with the crisp green in the back ground, sometimes being too weak, or nicely balanced out. This one I had to be careful with because the black base is a cream Earl Grey, so I made sure to have the exact same amount of green tea, black tea, and rose petals in every cup. It turned out to be one of the nicer green and black blends after all. I am also really glad that distributed the rose petals in the detail that I did, because I would have not otherwise tasted them as a complimentary accent.

With that said, it’s a good tea, but not great. I am glad that I sampled this instead of getting a full tin. The tin for this specific one is also a delight to have, which is also one of the reasons why Adagio is so expensive: it’s for the dang tins. Worth a try, but not something I highly recommend. I honestly couldn’t imagine what the other adagios taste like: thank heavens I was picky and chose the blended ones.

VariaTEA is awesome and let me try all the firefly blends. i haven’t had a chance to dig most of them out of the box of fun that i have in terms of samples but since today is SIPDOWN DAY! i figured i’d start with this one…because BLERGAMOT blech River is most certainly not full of blerg. says me. because i love river…hell i love them all and this is not her. because i don’t like it lol.

this is just not only blerg like but very floral to me. I appreciate the share a ton though because firefly is awesome. and fan blends are fun!

K S

River kicks butt and leaves the name taking to others. Bergamot kicks butt and doesn’t care about names. I don’t know, sounds like a match to me. lol

Sil

haha oh KS…you and i will never agree on blergamot ;)

Sipdown (160/166)!

I might be done watching Firefly, but I still have some Firefly teas to get to because I break out Serenitea to drink alongside Serenity! So I made this one up last night; honestly I wasn’t looking forward to it – mostly because of the Rose and the green tea in the blend. These last few blends I have left seem like the least promising ones to me.

But this wasn’t bad; it just tasted like a straight up Cream Earl Grey to me. No Rose, no Green tea – just smooth EG. I can get behind that and I enjoyed the cup, but honestly it wasn’t at all special so I wouldn’t order it just because of the character name – especially when, if I’m being honest, I didn’t really like River that much.

It wasn’t so much that I disliked her; I just felt like her character didn’t progress or develop at all: there were no significant signs that she was getting better at all and it was harder to relate to her over many of the other characters. However, the sad truth is probably just that Firefly probably just never got the chance to explore her more and to show any real progress of her getting better because it was cut short.

It’s a shame.

Anyway, thanks VariaTEA for the sample. This was a nice EG to wind down with, if nothing else.

I was surprised by this one as well. It was not one that appealed to me but when given the choice, it was the one my friend picked so we tried it out. I still have so many of the Firefly blends to taste.

I’m making today a Firefly/Dammann Freres day primarily because I still have a few Firefly teas to finish off, and a whole bunch of DF samples I haven’t got to but would like to try out sooner than later (because of Anna’s kind offer). I just finished Jayne – and I think Mal/Zoe are up next. But taking a short break to watch some GoT because I just got up and am really tired still.

Another Adagio sample from Cavo, through VariaTEA by the looks of it!

I actually really enjoyed this one. I didn’t think I loved floral teas but perhaps rose is the exception (between this and Fauchon’s Naissance which I haven’t reviewed here yet)

I have to admit, I hang my head in shame because though I consider myself a Joss Whedon fan girl, I’ve never watched Firefly. I tried watching Serenity once but wasn’t feeling it. Probably because I hadn’t watched the show first.

Maybe this fall I will watch it!

And this is a tea I’d order if I ever put one through to Adagio, if so, it will be near Christmastime, likely.

Thanks to Cavocorax and VariaTEA for passing this along! :)

Kaylee

Easily half of Serenity’s awesomeness comes from familiarity with Firefly. Watch the show first. It’s on Netflix!

VariaTEA

You’re welcome. And don’t worry about not watching Firefly as I only watched it earlier this year. In fact, I started watching the first episode a few times and just couldn’t get into it until one day my friends forced me to watch and I just got hooked. Serenity was okay but nothing compared to the show.

VariaTEA

Oh and as for the rose tea, I have a tasty one called Des Roses et Des Bonbons that I would be happy to share if you were interested.

OMGsrsly

Des Roses et Des Bonbons is so good! :)

Roswell Strange

Des Roses et Des Bonbons is absolutely amazing! “Thirding” that you should try it, especially if you also like cherries.

Sil

Serenity was awful! Awful! For reasons I cannot fully discuss since there are people who haven’t washed it yet.

Emilie

I have second the thing about difficulty getting through the first episode. I started it at least four times, then FINALLY made it through and loved it

ohfancythat

Des roses et des bonbons sounds delish! I would love to try a cup :)

I will watch Firefly once I’m done with Hannibal s2 and I only have 3 episodes left!! :/

VariaTEA

And Sil I think I know why you didn’t like Serenity and I feel the same. Sometimes I like to pretend it didn’t happen.

VariaTEA

And whatshesaid, feel free to send me your address and I can pass some along

I’m with you guys – Firefly was the best. Serentity was just a patched on ending since the tv show was cancelled and it’s as rushed as you’d expect when you can’t spend seasons on characters. Some people really enjoyed it, but I prefer Firefly.

So I went to a friends place this evening and I know she is a Firefly fan so I took my tins and have her the choice of which she wanted to drink. We ended up splitting a pot of this tea and tbh, I wasn’t looking forward to it. Of course, when I actually did enjoy it, I was quite surprised. First thing I noticed was a great vanilla taste but then as I paid a bit more attention to the cup, I picked up of notes of floral bergamot and sweet rose which are both flavors I am typically wary of but they worked perfectly in this tea. I was pleasantly surprised by River but then again, she is full of surprises :)

Sil

YAAAAY River!

If I liked rose just a little bit more, this blend would be amazing. Sweet rose, bergamot, vanilla… it’s light and floral and not as simple as it appears. I like it! I just wish it were a little less rose and a bit more vanilla.

Thanks VariaTEA! (204, +50 at Sils?)
