From 52teas

Tea of the Week for March 7, 2022!

A HUGE thank you to one of my favorite tea drinkers for the idea for this tea! I was trying to think of a cranberry tea that I could blend for spring. Most of my cranberry blends tend to be a bit more holiday-ish & I wanted to blend a cranberry tea now – not six or seven months from now. So, my tea buddy Kelly came through for me & suggested a blend with cranberries & blueberries, perhaps with a green rooibos base. So, here it is!

I also added a little lemongrass as it looks a little like straw & I thought “nest” – but even more importantly, the lemongrass adds a light lemon-y note to the cup that enhances the blueberry notes. This tastes so fresh, light & fruity – a little bit sweet, a little bit tart & very refreshing. A nice, naturally caffeine-free cuppa that’s also organic, vegan, gluten-free, allergen-free & all natural! Delicious!

This one didn’t turn out as light and delicate as I prefer in my green rooibos blends. The main thing I taste is slightly tart fruit. It has possibly too many different flavors going on, so it didn’t combine as smoothly as I would have liked. Underleafing may help. It was still enjoyable cold, just not as great as these blends usually are.

Cold Brew!

One of my favourite “styles” of tea in the world are the ones that are blended not so much to recreate a specific flavour but to story tell. For that reason I love everything about this blend: the cranberry pieces for the robin’s red breast, the blueberry to nod to the blue shell of a robin’s egg, and the lemongrass to look like the pieces of straw that make a nest!

The taste is light, fresh and playful with a pleasant citrusy top note to compliment th berry flavours that make up most of the body of the tea. I think the fact it’s got an almost “breezy” sort of quality combined with the playfulness of the flavours makes it soooo perfect for this time of year where we’ve transitioned from Spring into more of a proper summer. Plus, I steeped this one up for the end of my work day to drink during my commute home and since Montreal is in a bit of a heatwave right now the refreshing and cold tea was EXACTLY what I needed to beat that heat.

I totally agree! I appreciate Graveyard Mist for the same reason.

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 272)

I liked this one, though not as much as the lemon coconut custard tea. Nice berry flavour and some lemony notes from the lemongrass.

Speaking of robin’s eggs, we had some robins nesting in our carport (again!) and we think that two of the eggs failed to germinate, and mommy bird has just abandoned them. There were two babies that flew out of the nest at one point, hopefully they survived. But now these eggs are just sitting there…. should we just leave them? This is the first time it has ever happened.

I am not ornithologically trained, but I would say if your eggs are still there after a day or so, Mama is not coming back after them.

P.S. (The tea sounds lovely!)

Kittenna

So, odd update – nest definitely seemed abandoned, but all of a sudden mama bird is back. Possibly for a second round, possibly trying to incubate the two almost certainly non-viable eggs. (I haven’t managed to get a look to see if she’s laid more.) Adventures!

Mastress Alita

I’ve seen birds roll infertile/non-viable eggs out of the nest, letting them break on the ground.

Crowkettle

They’ll reuse the nest (or parts of it) and try again right after a failed attempt sometimes. I’ve heard that American Robins can have up to 4-5 nests per season!

I get mostly cranberry and lemon in this one with a bit of blueberry. It’s super refreshing on a dreary day like today and I was pleasantly surprised how much I like this one. I’ll decide if I’m going to order a larger bag after having a few more cups, because I drank my first cup so quickly that I need to try it again!

Another tea that I finished off in record time. My pouch sipdown was actually on Easter Sunday (as a fridge cold brew) — so memory is hazy now. I remember it being super refreshing, with lovely red and blue (tart and sweet) berry notes. It was festive and aesthetically pleasing.
