Tea of the Week for December 28, 2020!

Also featured as the 12th Tea of Christmas in our holiday box for 2020!

The inspiration behind this blend is simple – good, old-fashioned gingerbread. The freshly baked, spice-laden cake that tastes (& smells!) of ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg & allspice as well as a hint of vanilla & a caramel-y, molasses-y sweetness. The kind of holiday treat that you’d want to enjoy a hot cuppa tea with.

This blend combines the best of both – bringing together a rich, smooth black tea base of organic Assam, Ceylon & Yunnan teas with the spices & vanilla & caramel notes of a sweet, cake-y gingerbread. So warm & inviting. A perfect cuppa to enjoy this holiday season.

Oh & it’s organic, VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free too!

organic ingredients: black teas, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, calendula petals, vanilla bean & natural flavors

O is for… Old-Fashioned Gingerbread!

Not bad; I think it would have been better with a smidge of sweetener. It kind of tasted like a ginger-forward chai. Not really a favourite.

A teaxperience in four acts:

Act I: Regular steep, hot water only. I was immediately disappointed. This is very clearly, for me, a blend that wants some sort of cream and sweetener.

Act II: Oat mylk steep. Too oaty. Slightly better than a plain-water steep, but not by much.

Act III: Pistachio mylk steep. Better than oat. Still not great.

Act IV: Almond mylk steep. I had high hopes for this one, so I was disappointed by how impressively mediocre it was. I did dump in a whole lot of sugar this time, which made it more palatable but also very anti-diabetic.

Almond mylk was by far the best, and really were I in a more generous mood I might even call it pretty good, but at this point I was honestly just engrumbled by the sheer effort I had to put into making this taste good. I am exceedingly lazy and have a lot of love for blends that taste good no matter what I do to them.

I should say something about the flavour and fragrance, I reckon: essentially, it’s not gingery enough for me.

That’s strange. 52teas chai and ginger-type blends are usually stellar.

Nik

52teas everything is usually stellar. And this may be, too. Tastes are different and everything isn’t for everyone. Plus, I don’t see how it’s possible to ensure that every packet of tea and every scoop steeped has exactly the right amount of each ingredient to result in the taste the blender intended. I read another review of this tea that said it was too gingery—it just wasn’t for me. =)

Hmm this one isn’t as special as I’d hoped. It tastes like a pleasant ginger-heavy chai. It’s not spicy, and there aren’t really any bready/pastry elements I can detect. It tastes good, but there’s nothing about it that stands out from other chais, and I was hoping for some cookie element!

Sipdown! (39)

I wish I liked this one as much as others seem to, but it just wasn’t quite gingerbread for me. It’s a perfectly pleasant mildly spiced black tea that’s heavy on the ginger, but there’s nothing really cookie-y about it. Others mentioned molasses notes, which I guess I can taste a hint of, but I wish there was much more.

Anyway, it was fun to try! :)

Finished off my first sample bag (1 to go). This may be my favorite gingerbread tea. The black base works so well against the blend of spices. Very molasses forward.

I was tempted to get this one.

I haven’t tried any of the teas from my calendar yet, but I’m excited for an accurate gingerbread tea!

52 Teas 12 Teas of Christmas – Day 12

If it wasn’t for Roswell Strange’s advent pictures, I would have been calling this Gingerbread Black Tea because I scratched the label and assumed I fully scratched it when I saw a plausible name for this tea. I thought Gingerbread seemed a little unusually plain for Anne but was going with it. Then I saw her pictures and realized I needed to keep scratching.

This take on gingerbread is not overly sweet. As an eggnog latte, a lot of the sweetness is coming from the milk and eggnog. The tea is contributing a boat load of flavor though. Ginger in the front with cinnamon, clove, and molasses trailing behind. It’s good and rich and certainly very festive. This is the flavor of a great ginger cookie in my book – whether its gingerbread or even ginger molasses cookies (which I love). Also this tea is so festive so it is really the perfect last tea for this calendar!

Adventaggedon Day 23 – Tea 4/6

Today, in “welp, I’m an idiot”, I saw the name of this tea after taking off the scratch off name and my first thought was that it was going to be a gingerbread flavoured Old Fashioned as in the cocktail. I even opened the bag and gave the tea a sniff, to which I though “Huh, I don’t think I get it” before realizing that I was just a fucking moron.

I think I had a Gingerbread inspired or “Gingerbread like” tea in every single advent this year, except for Offblak. That’s kind of to be expected, it’s a pretty festive flavour. Some of them were pretty nice – but this was my favourite. It’s ginger at the forefront but backed by malt, molasses, allspice, dark and dense sweetness, clove and all those other goodies that make a gingerbread cookie so delicious. Gingerbread is sort of an enigma of sorts for me – I don’t like the taste of straight up, spicy or raw ginger very much but with those darker notes or a juicy fruit? Yeah, I can fuck with that. So, gingerbread is something I often do enjoy.

I don’t think I would have ever ordered this for myself, but I’m glad I got to try it because it was a nice surprise and a very fun and festive way to close out the 52Teas “12 Teas of Christmas” advent! Can’t wait for next years!

I would have thought the same thing!
