Tea of the Week for August 24, 2020!

So this is kind of my own invention – I started out with the idea of a Voodoo Cocktail – which is coconut rum & butterscotch schnapps (and other ingredients). Never tried it, mind you. At least, not the cocktail. As I’ve said on many occasion (and will surely say it again) I’m more of a tea-totaler – but I do like to play with (alcohol-free) rum essence for my teas because I do like the flavor of rum – so long as the rum isn’t too intrusive of a flavor.

This blend starts with a blend of yerba mates (both toasty roasted mate & fresh green mate). Then the experimentation began: I started out blending toasted coconut, butterscotch essence & a hint of rum essence – that’s the Voodoo. After the first taste test, I decided I wanted to add a little something more to it & that something was cashew essence.

I’m so in love with this blend – the cashew added just the right amount of nuttiness to the cup – it adds a nice toasty flavor that is enhanced by the roasted mate & it adds just a little bit of depth to the coconut flavor. It all works together so nicely. A warm, invigorating drink that is perfect for autumn & nobody is more excited about autumn’s arrival than yours truly!

This tisane is organic, VEGAN & gluten free. The cashew essence is nut free – however, the coconut is considered a tree-nut so if you’re allergic to coconuts, this is not a tisane for you.

Taster size is approximately 15g

organic ingredients: green & roasted yerba mate, toasted coconut, calendula petals & natural flavors

Oh – wow! I love this more than I thought I would. I figured I’d like it – I mean, butterscotch & coconut? Yes please! But I love the way the flavors all come together. Hints of coconut & rum. Sweet, creamy butterscotch & a kiss of cashew. It just works.

Sweet & toasty! This is the kind of drink that makes it OK that I’m awake because the absolute worst moment in the day being that moment when I wake up . . . a cuppa this makes that moment better.

to brew: OK, so I’ve been experimenting a little bit with brewing mate & I’ve been doing a little bit of ‘research’ (google search) on the best ways to brew mate. Here’s what I’ve found: heat 11 1/2 ounces of freshly filtered water to 185°F. Give the pouch of mate a good shake to redistribute ingredients & then measure out 4g of leaf. put the leaf in your teapot or other brewing vessel and moisten the mate with a little bit (1/2 an ounce) of cool, freshly filtered water. After the water is heated, pour over the pre-moistened leaves and steep for 5 minutes. strain & enjoy.

This blend tastes good without sweetener, but I like adding just a teensy bit of sugar (or brown sugar) to the cup – it enhances the butterscotch flavor. Really tasty!

Strange VariaTEA TTB – Tea #14

Had no idea what this was, but I love mate so I pulled it out to try. Turns out it’s butterscotch, yum! There’s coconut in it, but it smelled fine so I steeped it up.

It’s quite good. I taste a lot of the mate, which I like. It’s a blend of both green and roasted mate and I get the gently earthy herbaceous green flavor alongside the toasty comforting roasted notes. There’s a slight bitterness for some reason, not sure if that’s coming from the mate or something else. The added flavors are somewhat subtle, but I can definitely pick out both butterscotch and cashew. There’s apparently rum essence as well, but I think it kind of blends together with the butterscotch. The coconut adds a nice creaminess.

I really like it, definitely a keeper! Creamy, nutty, butterscotch tastiness.

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 198) [Final tea drank in March]

V is for… Voodoo Cashew Mate!

Not always a fan of mate, but the flavours here really worked for me! It was deliciously nutty and creamy and roasty, with most of the mate earthiness masked by the flavourings. I think I’d prefer these flavours on a different base, but this is not one I should have any trouble finishing. Bonus, looks like I have 2 packets, probably because I got a second in a grab bag at some point. Yum!

It looks like I managed to drink 71 unique blends from 52teas this month, so I’m well on my way to drinking through all of them by mid-year! I admittedly intentionally have not yet had a cup from about a half dozen favourite 52teas that only have that one cup left in them… I’ll save those for my final few, I think. And then probably start a campaign to get them reblended ASAP!

Another of the “has coconut” teas I put over in my Sipdown Corner. Brewed a cheeky warm cup to sip on before I grab iced tea to take to work.

I am not well versed in mate, but one of the few I really like is a Vanilla Macademia Nut one from Tea Chai Te in Portland. The dry leaf had a strong nutty aroma (reminded me of pistachio) and the brewed tea smells spot on for the Tea Chai Te Vanilla Macademia Nut Mate. A strong pistachio sort of nuttiness and a roasted aroma akin to the roastiness of coffee.

It’s very tasty! The actual taste of green mate is much stronger in the Tea Chai Te blend, and those notes are more subdued here with more of the roasted mate coming through, so I like this one a bit better. There’s a strong nuttiness to the cup, with a roasted coffee vibe, and a slight creamer flavor from the sweetness/creaminess of the coconut. I’m picking up a bit of the smoky note of the mate but it blends well here, and am not tasting the typical dry grass/hay flavor.

A very nice morning cuppa!

Samurai TTB #7

Coconut, cashew, and butterscotch are all flavors I love, so I was here for this blend! I think I would have liked it even more on a black tea base, as the mate added an earthiness I wasn’t crazy about, but it was still a delicious combination and even better once I added a bit of milk!

Wow, this was different from what I expected but very good!

I got way more butterscotch from the flavour that I expected to, but I wasn’t mad at it. I actually adore butterscotch and there are few butterscotch teas I’ve been impressed with – one of my favourites is a teabag, actually. DT tried to do Butterscotch this year, but honestly I don’t think we nailed it. I’m trying to think, now, about what the last tea I had from 52Teas was that used this butterscotch flavouring because it tastes so familiar but recently familiar!!

Aside from my delight at such a forward butterscotch flavour, there’s a nice nutty undertone and hints of grass and a mild smokiness from the mate used in the tea. It all comes together very nicely, and I appreciate the more herbal and natural elements that the mate brings to the party – it helps keep this from crossing into cloying territory.

I remember, years back, I really enjoyed an Adagio fan blend called “Felix Felicis” that was caramel and different nuts (mainly almond, I think) and this feels like an improved upon version of that concept. Voodoo Cashew is an adorably cute name and I’m obsessed with it, but this could easily pass as a “Felix Felicis” blend too.
