Tea of the Week for June 15, 2020!

The blend: a buttery, sweet, creamy TieGuanYin Oolong blended with beautifully sweet-tart pineapple and zesty ginger. Nothing overly complicated & yet, this tea is so delightfully complex!

The TieGuanYin has a smooth silkiness to it. It’s floral – however, the ginger softens the floral tones just a bit with it’s peppery character. I went “gingerly” on the ginger, to not overwhelm the cup with the heat of the ginger – so there’s just enough spice to this to keep the flavors interesting. The pineapple tastes juicy & sweet with just the right amount of tangy flavor to keep things bright & lively. A really nice balance of flavors and textures.

This blend is organic, VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free!

Taster size is approximately 12g

organic ingredients: oolong tea, pineapple, ginger & natural flavors

As I sit here, sipping on this tea, I’m happy. I’m beyond happy – really – with how wonderful this blend came out. I’m always just a little bit – concerned – about how a TieGuanYin will come out because of the natural floral notes that are part of the TieGuanYin profile. I love those floral notes, but when you pair them with other flavors, I worry that either the other flavors will not meld well with the floral notes. It usually happens that the floral notes are too overwhelming that the other flavors have a difficult time shining through – or sometimes, it happens that the flavors dampen the floral notes so much that they’re nearly indistinguishable.

With this blend, neither of those things are happening. I get that floral tone. But I also taste both the ginger and the pineapple & each flavor in this cup is enhanced by the presence of the other flavors. The pineapple tastes better with the ginger. The ginger is not overwhelming the palate with its characteristic heat. The floral notes are softened by the ginger, but not overpowered by it. That softened floral note allows the pineapple to taste so fresh & lively.

A truly wonderful cuppa!

to brew: give the blend a good shake before you measure to make sure the fruit & spice are well-incorporated with the tea leaf pellets. use 2 1/2 grams of leaf to 12 ounces of very hot water (175°F) and allow to steep for 3 1/2 – 4 minutes. strain & enjoy.

Remember to resteep these leaves. To resteep, use the same amount/temperature of water but add 30 seconds of steep time to the second infusion (in other words, steep for 4 – 4 1/2 minutes). With each subsequent resteep, add an additional 30 seconds of steep time.

I spent four hours cleaning house yesterday and every part of my body hurts… so today is dedicated to tea, books, YouTube videos, and naps. I’ve been on a big “pirate” kick with my media lately, so while this tea isn’t the most seasonally appropriate choice, it did seem to fit nicely thematically.

It smells divine. I’m a big fan of 52Tea’s pineapple flavoring. The oolong is really silky and floral, and accompanies the pineapple flavor so nicely. It’s not as tangy as I’d like from pineapple, but there is something very satisfying about the soft sweetness of this flavor as well. Oddly enough, I’m not really getting any ginger… a soft aftertaste of it at most. But this is really nice. I imagine it would be great iced, as well.

Sipdown (226)

Thank you for sharing Sil! This was really floral and could use maybe a touch more ginger but the flavour I got paired beautifully with a bright/sweet pineapple flavour. Overall, I liked this one.

G is for… Gingerly Pineapple!

The flavouring here is surprisingly light on the ginger – definitely more pineapple than anything, with only a whisper of ginger (more in the aftertaste). I’m not a huge fan of the flavouring, but the base is a really nice buttery and fresh-tasting oolong; because of the base, I actually do enjoy this tea although I’d definitely prefer the base with different flavours (berries?!).

Homemade Advent Day 15
from AJRimmer
I’ve been writing tasting notes on my phone and haven’t been great about remembering to post them on the same day.
Anyway, this tea had been on my wishlist so yay! for being able to try it and tick another tea off of it. The pineapple is fresh and bright here and the ginger creates the slightest warming sensation on the tongue. The oolong base adds some floral notes and is quite smooth. This is the best pineapple tea I’ve ever had and what I was looking for in all of the other pineapple teas that I’ve tried. I was able to get three steeps out of this and would purchase more of this if it was available when I was ordering. The third steep was more oolong heavy in terms of flavor. *Note to self try more pineapple teas from 52 Teas.

I expected to dislike this flavor profile, but I’m super glad I tried it anyway! The pineapple is juicy and fresh. The ginger also tastes fresh and not too spicy. I must have used most of it in my first cup because I remember the ginger in that one being a lot stronger, whereas now it’s just a hint. The oolong is vegetal, which I don’t usually like, but somehow everything combines super well. The resteep is heavier on the oolong, lighter on pineapple, but still delicious. I’m sorry for prejudging you, tea!

This does sound nice!

I thought I’d left it behind at an Airbnb and was sooo relieved when I saw it in my tea cupboard at work!

Not enough ginger in most of these cups but when i get did one that had the ginger and freshness of the pineapple it was pretty good. :) Interesting combo for sure!

Cold Brew Sipdown (1541)!

Definitely very delicate and lightly flavoured as a cold brew but both ripe pineapple and ginger come across in the taste along with smooth floral oolong. So, all the components are there and tasting lovely albeit soft. It works though! Was a nice brew to sip on yesterday evening.

This sounds very nice. I remain in awe of those creative tea alchemists who think up combinations I never would have dreamed of!

Sipdown 5- 2021
The oolong is super floral in scent and flavor. There’s some kick from the ginger in the finish. But, I can’t taste any pineapple. Sad. Goodbye ginger flower oolong.

June 2020 Blend

Wooo! My box finally arrived! I potentially received too many tea parcels lately but opening them up never gets old.

This Tieguanyin is coming across as pretty silky and buttery with some florals (maybe a musky sweet violet). The ginger is more of a complimentary savoury-sweet component to the citrusy pineapple at first, adding some extra ginger zest to the finishing note (Edit: most zingy on my second steep).

My brain may be faulty after such a long period of time, but this is a pretty close approximation of Butiki’s Flowery Pineapple, the main difference being that this uses Tieguanyin and adds ginger while Butiki used a Wen Shan Bao Zhong (for the life of me I cannot recall what that base specifically tasted like besides “green oolong” and that I always seemed to oversteep it). Another easy comparison is 52Tea’s Banana Oolong – if you liked that you’ll probably like this too.
