Tea of the Week for April 8, 2019!

Winter has arrived and this tea is the perfect tea to fight off the Wights!

No, I don’t know that for certain. Maybe the Wights might actually enjoy this tea. It might be just the thing that puts that sparkle in their eye.

For this blend, I started with a base of organic Dragon Well tea (because dragon) and added a lot of blackberries because dragonglass (aka obsidian) is black. Then I added a touch of marshmallow essence to give it a pleasant sweetness. It may seem like a simple recipe but I didn’t want to get too elaborate with the Dragon Well, I wanted that to be the core of this tea because … well, because Dragon Well is awesome. That’s why.

This is really quite lovely. The flavors do not compete with one another. You get a nice, crisp vegetal note along with delicious blackberry and a subtle hint of creaminess from the marshmallow.

This one is all organic, gluten free, allergen free and of course, VEGAN!

organic ingredients: green tea, blackberries & natural flavors

I don’t normally reach for Dragonwell tea but when it is Game of Thrones themed, how can I resist? I was glad for a green tea base in the Game of Thrones set, a blend for dragonglass could easily get too dark or tart if left to the imagination. This blend puts blackberries and creaminess with the dragonwell tea. The blend is definitely berry-forward, but the green tea and marshmallow root keep it from being too tart or juicy, bringing the blend back to a well-balanced vegetal base. There’s just a hint of toastiness in the green tea that almost makes this blend seem like a blackberry pastry. I’m glad the theme of the tea gave me a chance to try a blend I might have skipped over otherwise.

Just throwing up an additional note to this.

Please, PLEASE don’t oversteep this. I was feeling adventurous and brewed up a whole pot. However, using only 3 tsp for the entire pot (I was making it in the Brevelle), I thought I would intentionally oversteep a bit to pad out the flavor.

Don’t. Just… DON’T.

The blackberry gets tart quickly. I took a sip and instantly my mouth puckered. It was salvageable with a bit of splenda, which thankfully didn’t completely ruin the tea, only tempered the tart. But yeah, don’t oversteep this. It’s too good to ruin it like that. Learn from my fail and DON’T DO IT!

Yikes! Good to know. I think I’ve been pretty careful when making this so far, but now I’ll be extra so!

Hands down my favourite of the GoT teas. I expected to like this, a lot, and I did. I think I oversteeped it a tad when I had it, but it was still deliciously beany dragonwell and berries. I’m not entirely sure that this is a blend I might have thought of when thinking of dragonglass (that makes me think of licorice, actually, which I’m thankful is not involved here), but it’s fun that the base is dragonwell. And it’s delicious, so I don’t much care.

Planning on a second cup of this tomorrow evening while watching episode 5, as we’re all caught up now. I’m interested to see where things all end up, and debating about reading the books once it’s all over.

ETA: Read the description and ok, blackberries with dragonwell is actually pretty fitting. I’d forgotten what berries were actually used.

The show is too graphic/emotional for me, but I love the books. It’s so hard to avoid spoilers as I’ll have to wait I don’t even know how many years to find out what happens!

Kittenna

I want to read the books now. Books are almost always better, but I tend to have less and less time to read things as I get older! Sad.

I’m going to start this with request for forgiveness. I waited to write this review till after I bought the very last pouch. I wasn’t going to buy any more tea for a while. I made a small Plum Deluxe purchase and subscribed to their box and the 52teas box this month so I really shouldn’t have… but you see I actually had a feeling I’d want some more of this from the moment I read the description and almost did before I even took a single sip. I kept checking the stock and it was down to one pouch remaining when my monthly box came this morning. It just sounded too perfect and I wasn’t let down.

I’m always unsure of how to eyeball measurements on dragonwells, I should put batteries in my little scale but for today I just winged it and put a few small pinches with a blackberry and a half into the infuser till it looked right and it worked. I was surprised at how dark it brewed for a dragonwell, until I remembered the blackberry and then it all made sense.

The flavor profile is balanced, the blackberry is juicy and the marshmallow is creamy without overbalancing the tea itself. I had half the cup hot and the other half at room temp after taking an unplanned nap. The second half was even tastier than the first with the marshmallow sweetness moving to the front and a bit of vanilla flavor peaking out. I’m debating trying to get a second steep out of the leaves or cold brewing them.

Thank you Anne for doing such an amazing job! If you didn’t get a chance to snag a pouch I’m sorry I was greedy. Vote for it for the Christmas box if it’s an option.

52Teas

To be honest, that’s the way I usually brew most of my teas when I’m not taste testing them. For accuracy with taste testing, I weigh them, but when I’m just drinking tea – I almost always eyeball it except on the rare occasions when I’m having a new to me tea (that I didn’t craft myself).

Kittenna

I’ve also withheld reviewing a limited tea until I’ve purchased more. I don’t think it’s unreasonable! Haha. This would have 100% been a repurchase for me aside from my vast quantities of tea and the fact that it’s a green and will taste best when fresh. I’ll just hope that it’s reblended someday.

52Teas

Just for the record . . . there are just a few of these pouches back in stock. After these are gone, though, that will be the last of this one for a while because I don’t get dragonwell in stock very often and I usually only get just enough for whatever I’m planning on as I don’t want to keep it in stock because I don’t want to age it any more than necessary.

52Teas

And I hate to say this so early, but it won’t be an option for the holiday box because the leaf is too bulky and would make for a very large (overstuffed) box which may seem like a lot of fun to receive (I get that, I really do!) but it makes it a lot more difficult to package everything up and get it out on a timely basis. :)

In other words: If you love this one, please get the remaining pouches now because the earliest that I’ll be reblending it would be next year sometime (not guaranteed, but that’s the earliest possibility for a reblend).

52Teas

Thanks! :)
