Tea of the Week for May 8, 2017!

I went back and forth about what I should name this tea. My first thought was – how about Cucumber Mojito? I mean, it has most of the main flavors that a cucumber mojito would: cucumber, lime and mint. It’s just missing the rum. But trust me, you won’t miss the rum because the balance of flavors here is really nice.

But then I thought back to my tea reviewing days and I seem to recall having reviewed (or at least wanting to review) a Cucumber Mojito blend so I decided against that. Besides, I wasn’t really looking to create a cucumber mojito blend here because I didn’t add rum to it. I was looking to create a cucumber blend and I wanted a nice contrasting flavor to the mellow savory-sweet flavor of the cucumber. I didn’t want to add melon to the mix because I’ve done a couple of cucumber melon flavored teas. So I decided on lime. Lime would offer a slightly tart contrast to the cucumber and to balance things out, I added just a hint of cool, crisp mint to the blend (peppermint and spearmint, heavier on the spearmint than the peppermint).

For the base, I chose a gorgeous Bai Mu Dan which has a light fruity flavor to complement the flavors of cucumber and lime. I thought that the delicate notes of the cucumber would work nicely with the delicate flavor of Bai Mu Dan. I went really light with both the mint and the lime here as I didn’t want either to overpower the whole thing.

And as I said in the first paragraph – I believe the balance here is really nice. It’s sweet but there’s enough savory to it to keep it from being cloying. The lime is more like a squeeze of lime rather than a prominent tone – it adds just a touch of brightness to the cup without taking over. The mint is light and refreshing.

This is springtime in a teacup!

C is for… Cucumber Mint Limeade!

The dry tea smells much like cucumber, with a good dose of lime-flavouring pungency – not really any mint. Brewed, the flavour is refreshing – cucumber dominates, with a light side of mint and lime. I appreciate the level of mint here – it’s well-balanced and doesn’t take over, which is really appreciated! This is admittedly not my favourite tea profile, but it is really nice and refreshing. (If I had to pick a cucumber tea, though, I’m going with Cucumber Cantaloupe on that oolong base!)

There is something just off about this tea.

Conceptually, I like the idea of a cucumber, mint and lime tea. Its sounds refreshing. The initial taste is strongly of cucumber, however after that there is this very odd flavor. I think it might be whatever was used for the mint flavor, it is bitter and weird. It really throws off the taste of the tea.

The tea is definitely tastier iced than hot. Mostly because cucumber is a bit of an odd flavor to have hot. Sadly the off putting secondary flavor is very strong whether hot or iced.

It was so hot today! Luckily I had this tea to take off the edge. It just feels more hydrating than all the other teas, the cucumber and mint somehow acting as a cooling flavor even when it’s not iced. I wish I’d been quick enough to snag a big bag of this to get me through the summer, but alas they sold out too fast. I did get another taster pouch though, so looking forward to that. Also, in case you missed their discussion post, 52Teas is doing a mystery grab bag sale right now :)

This is the upcoming week’s Tea of the Week and I absolutely adore it.

I love cucumber teas. I absolutely love them. I especially love cucumber blended with a lovely white tea like our Bai Mu Dan – the delicate, sweet flavor of the white tea melds beautifully with the notes of cucumber to create a flavor that reminds me a lot of cucumber water (which I love) but even better because – tea. In the past, I’ve done a couple of cucumber blends with melon flavors (cucumber watermelon is my absolute favorite aqua fresca and so I find myself wanting to do a spin on this flavor combination frequently and then I think – oh yeah, it’s already been done) but this time I wanted to do something a little different.

The mint and lime here are actually rather soft in flavor – even though the tea is named “Limeade” I didn’t want the lime to overpower the cucumber. I really wanted cucumber to be the main event. I feel like cucumber is a difficult flavor to accomplish in tea so that it’s a well-defined flavor. (There are a few flavors like that.)

Here, I think I managed to accomplish a very pleasing balance of Cucumber, lime and mint where each of the flavors is discernible without overpowering the balance – and the white tea is not overwhelmed either. I get that fresh, crisp flavor of the Bai Mu Dan – which is absolutely complemented by the presence of cucumber and mint and the lime adds a pleasing brightness to the cup.

Really nice – even if I do say so myself. :)
