From 52teas

This is a tea from my LiberTEAS days and it was one of my most popular. While this is a little different from the original – I can’t say that it isn’t just as tasty as I remember that caramel tea tasting. This is rich, sweet, and delightfully dessert-y!

I’ve had this tea before but it’s been a while because I obviously forgot how good it is. I would have finished it long before now. It’s malty and strong, but not bitter. I maybe steeped it too long because it’s also a little astringent. I don’t know that I taste caramel necessarily, but I think it may impart a richness the tea might not have had otherwise.

I feel like I’m working through these quite quickly, but they are delicious…

I used 1 tsp of leaf for today’s cup, and gave it 2.5 minutes in boiling water. It brews up pretty dark (and pretty quickly), but I didn’t add any milk…mostly just to see. Some caramel flavours are drowned out pretty easily, and I generally go with whole milk, so I feel like I should see how things stand first.

To taste, it’s pretty good. The caramel flavour is fairly strong, not overpowering, but immediately identifiable as caramel. There’s a creaminess to it, and a burnt sugar-like flavour in the aftertaste. The black tea base is smooth and malty, but a touch more prominent than I’d have liked. Maybe a shorter brew time, or a little less leaf (or a splash of milk…) would help to round things out a touch better.

On the whole, though, I’m pretty pleased with this one. It’s sweet, caramelly, and it contains caffeine. There’s certainly nothing in any of that to dislike.

Nice. Do you have a favourite caramel tea, by the way?

Good question.

I know this is an older post, but I would also like to know if you have a favorite caramel tea!

Scheherazade

If I had to choose my all-time favourite, it would probably be Mariage Freres Wedding Imperial.

Thank you!

It’s nice to see something from LiberTeas teas make its way over to 52teas (I hope Masterpiece Chai makes the move too). My thoughts on this tea are much like the original version. The malty flavour of the base give the tea a nice hint of burnt caramel but the caramel flavour itself could stand to be a bit stronger. Still I noticed that adding sweetener improved the flavours of the original version, so I’ll have to try that here.

doubled the leaf on this today and i’m getting a little stronger caramel taste to this one. Still not a huge fan of this one, since it’s so subdued in terms of the flavour for me. A decent cup, but nothing out of this world.

Third tea of the day, and another that doesn’t always work for me, but did today. The caramel was subtle, but just flavourful enough for me to really enjoy it, and the black base was just rich and strong enough without tumbling into astringency. Although the flavour is reduced on this old tea, I think I hit the sweet spot for leaf + infusion time today.

I didn’t seem to have much success with this one.

I’ll admit that after sampling Glazed Donut and French Toast I wasn’t expecting much from this blend. This morning I was pleasantly surprised by this little cuppa, even without adding sweetener. The flavor is slightly sweet and caramel-like. As with the other black tea blends I’ve tried recently from 52Teas, the base in this blend is delicious and smooth. While the blend tastes a bit astringent to my palate, I don’t get bitter at all (another pleasant surprise). I will enjoy sipping down my 0.5-ounce bag and look forward to trying more black tea blends by 52Teas in the future.

I am impressed with the flavor on this. It has a burnt sugar taste that is pretty strong, but is heightened with a little honey in the mug. I imagine it would hold up well to milk, as it is strong.
