Tea of the Week for October 19, 2015!

This takes an ordinary toffee bar up a notch or two! I used my black tea base of organic Chinese & Indian teas and flavored them with buttery toffee flavors and then added some cardamom, ginger, clove and black pepper just to spice things up a bit. And just to make sure those chocolate-y flavors come out and play, I added cacao nibs & cacao shells!

Really good. Really REALLY good!

- – -

OK, so I’m really liking this. I’m not at all surprised since I do love those toffee candy bars! And this takes those yummy confections one step further because TEA.

The chocolate here is well defined, and there’s a nice buttery toffee flavor to it. The ginger and cardamom are strong notes but not overly spicy. Just enough to perk up the taste buds and add some savory contrast to the sweeter flavors. The black tea isn’t overpowered. It’s good and strong without being too astringent. The earthy notes of the black tea add some depth to the chocolate.

I find that as I continue to sip, the spice flavors do develop somewhat – but I like that the other flavors don’t reduce their impact to make way for the spice. A really nice cuppa. I hope that Kelly likes it as much as I do!

To brew, I measured a bamboo scoop of tea into the basket of my Kati and poured water heated to 205°F over the leaves. Then I let it steep for 2 1/2 minutes and let it cool for 10 minutes. The second time I tested it, I made it a wee bit stronger so that I could go latte with it – and if you like a latte, I highly recommend it for this tea! Absolutely YUM!

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: Before you open your pouch to measure out your tea, turn the pouch upside down and give it a gentle shake to redistribute the spices and the cacao shells and nibs.

Organic Ingredients: black teas, cardamom, ginger, cloves, black pepper, cacao nibs, cacao shells & all-natural flavors.

Steep: 1 1/2 of tea to 12 oz. 205°F water. Steep 2 1/2 – 5 minutes. Allow tea to cool 10 minutes after brewing for best flavor.

T is for… Toffe Bar Chai!

Mostly got just a chai from this tea, with a bit of a cacao twist in some sips.

The first time I had this, I added soy milk, and the flavor of the tea was completely overwhelmed, which was a shame. I had to wait forever until I had dairy milk in the fridge again to give it another try. There’s definitely something desserty and sweet about it. It doesn’t taste specifically like toffee, but I get where it’s going with that idea. It’s also mildly spiced – really too mild for me to consider it a chai. The flavor combination tasted good, but not very remarkable. I imagined a quite decadent flavor, and it didn’t live up to that. The rebrew tasted similar. I guess I wish the sweetness were more toffee-ish and the spices were stronger.

I remember this one being quite wonderful, but then, I tend to drink teas black, usually. Maybe that makes a difference here.

AJRimmer

For some reason, black teas just feel like they need milk to me – just my preference!

Evol Ving Ness

Yep, I get that.

52 Teas 12 Teas of Christmas – Day 10

I made this one as an eggnog latte and had the weirdest experience with this. The entire time I was getting fruit leathers. Like spot on for a fruit to go bar. It was good, I suppose, but not what I expected at all. I have a small serving left I will try plain because this was just a very odd experience. I wonder if there was a cross contamination issue since my sister used the same steeper earlier to make a tea lemonade with Mango Fruit Punch tea. I thought I cleaned it thoroughly but perhaps not…

Cameron B.

Is there a reference I’m missing here with the misspelling in the name?

Leafhopper

I was wondering that as well.

VariaTEA

I was also wondering tbh. I skimmed the tea page on 52 Teas and didn’t see an explanation.

52Teas

This tea was a reblend of a previous customer creation. This customer had invested in our Kickstarter start up campaign and she chose as her reward the “create your own blend” type of reward – and this comes specifically from her choice of spelling for the blend.

Ooh that’s interesting! Thanks for letting us know, hah.

Sipdown (1337)!

Finished this one off at work during the week – at first I was unimpressed with the cup because it was all spice and no toffee, but then I got caught up in a conversation with a coworker and when I came back to my tea it was cold. However, it seems that as the tea cooled more of the sweetness and toffee-esque flavours seemed to come out, so it actually ended up being a good thing.

That said, I’m glad to clear another chai out of my stash.

Sample from evol ving ness yes please. this is delicious. It’s more chocolate chai to me than toffee bar, though there is a sweetness there that hints at toffee. What it is absolutely, is super tasty. I am a fan of this one! thank you evol!

Evol Ving Ness

Oh yay! I am delighted that you like this one too.

I LOVE chai teas! The dry leaf aroma is so spicy I can barely inhale it. The brewed tea aroma is interesting. It smells savory and spicy, like fresh spice cake hot out of the oven. The flavor sans additions matches the aroma.

I added Truvia and skim milk and now it is much more like toffee. I’m impressed! Usually toffee flavored teas end up being caramel flavored teas. But this isn’t caramel. It’s distinctly toffee.

I like the added component of the spices because that makes this multi-faceted and more interesting. This is a good one! If I had more of it, I could see myself blending it with some of the rather lackluster teas in my collection to make them tastier. If you pick up some of this, and I recommend you do, it really benefits from added sweetener. Mmm mmm, so good!

I like chai teas, but I’m not really that discriminating. For me they typically fall into two categories: [can be drunk without milk and sugar], [too strong to drink without milk and sugar]. Sometimes I can tell apart other differences such as anise or vanilla, but mostly I just can’t. I prefer chais that can be enjoyed without milk and sugar.

This chai clearly falls into the first category and can be enjoyed without adding milk and sugar. It is on the mild side when it comes to spiciness and maybe has a hint of caramel if I’m looking to find it. I like it, and I am finding that the flavor is improving as it cools slightly.

I really enjoy this. I am a chai fanatic, even more so in the fall and winter, and this one definitely has a distinct toffee note that is enhanced with a teeny bit of sugar. Nomnom. It isn’t too spicy but I think that is what helps the toffee flavor come out and not be overwhelmed.

Backlog from October 9th:

This tea smells so strongly of chocolate. It’s unbelievable. The spice is also present, a sweet spice, possibly cardamom. In fact, in the teaspoon I just scooped there is a whole green cardamom pod mixed in with the cocoa nibs and shells and the black tea leaves.

I let this cool 10 minutes according to the package directions. The chocolate is the strongest flavor here and not the watered down chocolate flavor I’ve had in other dessert teas. It’s such a rich chocolate but not quite like a hot chocolate. I can taste the base tea through the chocolate notes.

Second Steep
8 ounces water + 205 degrees + 9 minutes

After the longer steep, I let this cool for 6 minutes. This second cup is much lighter than the first. I no longer taste any chocolate – the spices are much more prevalent. But even those are light. I can just barely taste the cardamom now.

Overall, I think it’s plain to see that I’m a fan of this one. It’s definitely one of the best chocolate teas I’ve had. I didn’t really taste any toffee flavors this time around, but I’m hopeful they’ll be present in future cups. A+ on this one!

So envious. I don’t recall chocolate being a dominant scent or flavour in this one. I’ll give the leaf more of a shake and steep again.

Shae

Maybe that will help! I plan on doing the same to see if I can find some of the toffee flavor.

Evol Ving Ness

My memory of this tea is gingerbread with caramelized bits of flavour. Delicious. I am looking forward to another cup or two some time soon.

Yes. A lovely tea.

The spice blend is an enjoyable medley of flavours. My issue with many chai teas is that the cinnamon comes through like a freight train and everything else barely trails along. That is not the case here.

The first time I drank this tea, a few days ago, I thought gingerbread. Today too, that is the association I am having: gingerbread, but more the loaf rather than the cookies. There may be the slightest bit of chocolate going on here, but I would not know it is here if I hadn’t read that it was in the ingredients. Toffee, yes, and dense ginger spice cake on that beautiful black tea base.

A lovely cup for a cold day.

oooh I would not have imagined this tea to taste of gingerbread. Now I want it!

Evol Ving Ness

There are even wee bits of ginger shreds, or so it seemed to me.

It’s terrible this obsession of ours. Give. me. all. the. teas. Heh.
