From 52teas

One of the things I always love doing with our flavored teas is creating combinations that might be really messy or not look as pretty as something attempted in a real dessert. Case in point, this week’s tea. Caramel apples are abundant. Everyone knows about caramel apples, but why couldn’t you have a caramel banana? I imagine it might be messy and probably the texture would be odd—chewy, gooey caramel on the outside of a sweet, ripe banana. So maybe it wouldn’t be pretty and maybe the contrast of textures might be a bit odd, but I bet the flavors would be amazing. In fact, I’m so sure of it, that I’ve gone ahead and created a caramel banana flavored tea for this week’s tea. We combined caffeine-free organic honeybush, freeze-dried bananas, marigold petals and organic caramel and banana flavors.

Picked this one up from KallieBoo! from her stash sale recently. I’m not really getting the banana flavor but more of the caramel honey bush. Its decent and sweet with a hint of fruity notes as it cools. Its good and I’d definitely drink it again. Just not the banana flavor I was hoping for.

As it turns out, I think I’m not terribly fond of 52teas’ caramel flavoring. Both caramel teas I’ve had (this and caramel apple) really didn’t sit well with me. Also, I didn’t get any banana flavor. Oh well.

Overboard Traveling tea box

I love banana flavored things and Frank uses a banana flavor that is so good; I was hoping it would be similar in this blend. I also tend to like his honey bush blends, so I had high hopes for this and I am pretty darned happy with the results! Even unsweetened, I taste the banana and a hint of something sweet, likely the caramel. I think I’ll be keeping the rest of this which is probably a good thing as I have been loading up the box with wishlist items of the next participants all evening.

(On a side note, I’ve seriously had 4 cups of the Pomegranate Oolong and its still going strong, but I figured I needed a break to try some other things since I have another traveling tea box on its way to me right now!)

Overboard TTB.

This is a pleasant enough blend. The woody taste of the Honeybush blends well with a very natural tasting caramel flavor. I’m not tasting any banana, but I was a bit dubious about how well that would blend with the Honeybush anyway, so I can’t say I’m missing it.

Backlog:

This smells amazing and it tastes even better than it smells. The combination of the honey, nutty flavors of honeybush together with the buttery caramel notes and the banana is really delectable. The honey notes of the honeybush meld beautifully with the caramel notes.

I really enjoyed this – I thought it was a genius combination from Frank.

I’m not a fan of honeybush – and I often loathe bananas – but this one turned up in my mystery grab bag from 52Teas, so I had to give it a go in good faith.

…and it turns out that I still hate banana. This one is all kinds of ick and bleh, so it’s going to be disposed of with extreme prejudice.

I was in a banana tea phase not too long ago, so I was so pleased to see this pop up on 52Teas’ website. I especially love that this is a simple banana and caramel decaffeinated blend with not a whole lot of excess stuff to distract from the banana. The scent of this blend is more honeybush than banana, but the banana is still there.

Sipping… I’d say that I mostly taste honeybush. I’m assuming that the caramel is blending quite a bit with the honeybush because I don’t taste a separate note of caramel, just the generalized sweetness from the base. The banana is present, but rather faint. There is a bit of a sour finish that comes from the honeybush. This cup is enjoyable, but I want more flavor.

I’m finding 52Teas to be hit or miss for me. This one is more enjoyable than some of the recent blends I’ve purchased. Too often I’m thrilled to order a delicious blend, but find that it ends up tasting nothing like what it’s supposed to. This one was just okay for me – too much honeybush and not a whole lot of banana and caramel. I won’t have trouble finishing off the pouch, but I don’t think I’ll buy more.

I was looking at this blend, especially now that it’s on sale, but I find 52 Teas honeybush blends tend to mostly taste like honeybush so I am glad to see that confirmed in your review, though I am sorry it wasn’t the tasty caramel banana cuppa you were hoping for.

Thanks, VariaTEA! I think honeybush is hard to work with in general since it is such a strong flavor on its own.
