Wooooot! S’mores Genmaicha! I was very excited to see this tea up! Though, my tea no buy plan was unhappy. Pfffff! When a cool 52 Tea comes out, no buys are out the window!

Anyways, I greatly enjoyed this tea and will be buying another package if it ever is reblended! It better be reblended!

This genmaicha is very dark chocolately with marshmallow flavors, with a savory, roasted, little smokey genmaicha. If you had Marshmallow Treat (and love chocolate)

The long-awaited review (although I already caught it on your blog via facebook :D). The strong chocolate aroma has me a bit worried after Browncoat Genmaicha, still. I should try that again… or at least, open the bag again…

Ze_Teamaker

ahaha, yeah. I don’t need any more tea yet I bought 5 packets from there; though at least one was for my mom.

“When a cool 52 Tea comes out, no buys are out the window!” Hahaha! This made me laugh because I do the exact same thing! :)

Last night Rick and I watched Life of Pi…one of my favorite books ever and I bawled like a baby when Richard Parker was sick. Anyway, I got up to make tea because my life has been seriously lacking in the tea department lately (I should never allow myself to be so busy that I say that again). He asked for a cup which is crazy rare and I made him Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake (score! he loved it!)

I made this for myself, I’ve had 2 cups of the Marshmallow Genmaicha and over the past month or so, genmaicha has started become my comfort tea. I don’t know genmaicha well enough yet to really taste the flavors but they were subtle and warm and complemented the coziness of the rice while balancing the grassiness of the green tea itself. I put a few pieces of rock sugar in this but I think I like it plain much better. I’m excited to read everyone else’s reviews and then have another cup and see how my tastes adjust.

Stephanie

Great movie and I want to try that tea so bad! :D

jessiwrites

Mmmmm, I am so impatient to get my bag of this.

Rob Rauschenberg

This tea sounds amazing. I need to read that book too.

Stephanie

The book is even better than the movie :)

Jackie O

The book is worlds better, but I loved both. The book just has more detail and I felt I got to know Pi better on the pages.

I really like 52 tea’s marshmallow genmaichas which is making it difficult for me to resist the newest blend. However, $8.99 is already a touch pricey for 2 oz and I just can’t justify another $4.99 on top of that for shipping.

Luckily, I have this and the regular marshmallow treat to satisfy my marshmallowy genmaicha cravings. Plus, if I really want something delicious, there is always Japon !

Can I join the resistance too? :)

Sil

of course!

I am blissfully unaware of the new blend. Yay!

Day 4 of 52 teas 12 days of Christmas.

I have had this one before and quite liked it. The s’mores gave the genmaicha just enough sweetness.

This time around it is not as good. I recall reading lots of reviews on this tea (or it may have been on the brown coat genmaicha) about the re blend not tasting the same as the original. I wonder if this is something that I have run into.

I am finding this one to be much more seaweed-y than I remember. There is very minimal sweetness or even marshmallow flavour that I am able to pick up. I feel like I am getting a bit of vinegar taste, reminding me of pickles. Pickled genmaicha anyone?

The roastiness is quite strong which is something I normally like but just doesn’t seem to be working for this one today. It could have been something to do with my steeping as well. Who knows? I will try again.

Edit: So above I talked about having had this before, but what I had before was the marshmallow genmaicha, which I quite liked. So it would be a bit different from this one. I will have to try this one again and see if I can coax some other flavours out of it.

SPOILER – This is the daily tea from my 12 Teas of Christmas box. I pulled a frowny face when I saw s’mores but may Christmas Angels bless Frank for his use of marshmallow the root, making this a veggie friendly tea.

Woah, it reminds me of cream flavoured vodka shots in scent. It’s creamy, sweet and toasty but also somewhat chemical. Similar to the strange chemical smell that some Red Leaf Teas flavoured Matcha have.

It has a very interesting flavour. It’s like a flavoured Matcha meets a Genmaicha and they become blended together to create one unique blend. It has lost most of the chemicalness but there is still a synthetic flavour lurking. The Genmaicha is nice but I don’t think the S’mores blend is for me.

This one seems to get really mixed opinions. As a side note, I’m glad that you also find some of Red Leaf’s flavours chemical in smell.

blech!
I don’t know if I over leaved & over steeped, but this is awful!
It basically taste like burnt pieces of food. No chocolate, no marshmallow, no graham…. just burnt!

Fjellrev

Oh no, I’ve read many others saying the same thing!

TeaLady441

Try airing it out for a bit maybe? I think Frank said something about the new blends needing to sit a bit before the flavours meshed right. I think he posted in the discussion area, but I’m afraid I don’t remember the post!

CHAroma

Yeah, I remember seeing his post about this too and I think it was exclusive to the genmaicha blends (though I may be wrong about that). Airing it out should fix it.

tattooed_tea

I haven’t had the chance to air this one out yet. I have with a few other blends, but haven’t tried them again yet.

Tea #12 from Traveling Tea Box C

This tea was a little frustrating, because I was not able to find steeping directions anywhere – not even on the vendor’s site. I had to average out the different steep times and water temperatures that other Steepsterites had used to make this.

I’m not getting s’mores (no chocolate and no graham cracker), but I am getting very tasty caramel rice cakes with a burnt marshmallow aftertaste that is spot-on. Now, I have absolutely no idea what the best way to make this is for the s’mores effect but what I did was this:

Measured dry: 1tsp/8oz (gotta start somewhere)
Water temperature: 175°F (a guess because of the green tea)
Steeping time: 3min at first, then 5min

I may come back to this another time before I ship the box back off, because I would like to get that effect, but I just really hate guessing games.

Another Sil Samplebox Sipdown! Thanks Sil :)

So this would be ok, except it has a wierd bitterness to it that resulted in me dumping the last part of it, as it continued to get worse as it cooled. Anyway, I do taste the Genmaicha part of it, but am not getting chocolate or graham crackers.
Oh well, win some lose some, right?

Sil

pretty sure this is all part of that weird frank didn’t let the teas sit. I tried to air mine out but it didn’t seem to help.

Terri HarpLady

oh well… :)

Let me preface my tasting note by saying I am a big fan of both genmaicha and lapsang. This tea is wonderful! I can detect all the notes I was looking for- marshmallow, graham, and chocolate! I am really digging this and sort of wish I had purchased more than one pouch! Most chocolatey teas seem to have black bases and I’m learning I need to stay away from higher caffeine teas so this is PERFECT for me. I DO wish Frank added brewing instructions to the bags…I always just kind of have to guess how much tea and for how long! That is my only complaint really :)

Sil

wish mine had tasted as good as your review makes it sound

Stephanie

I’m not sure if the problem is just that this tea is not for everyone, or if the batches are really that significantly different! :(

Sil

Hard to say, i did enjoy his regular old marshmallow genmaicha.

Stephanie

I tried that one last night…I want to try it one more time before I jot down an official tasting note. I enjoyed it but it is not near as complex and wonderful as I found the s’mores to be.

Kittenna

You just picked this one up, right Stephanie? So it’s from the most recently-blended batch?

Stephanie

Correct Kittenna

Sipdown (201/204)!

So, the new Strawberry Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha looks really delicious, but I’m thinking that before even considering getting another pouch of Genmaicha I should really at least try the plain Marshmallow Treat that I already have. That would maybe be a smart plan, yes?

I chose to overleaf this cup and make it a sipdown rather than make two smaller cups. There was kind of an awkward amount of leaf left after my first cup…

This was pretty tasty though, with a bit more marshmallow aftertaste to accompany the chocolate in this cup. Thanks for the sample Lala!

VariaTEA

i made a cart with just the strawberry marshmallow treat genmaicha and found myself unable to justify $5 shipping on a $9 purchase

Sil

variatea…i know the feeling.. even with free shipping, i can’t quite bring myself to do it.

VariaTEA

If shipping were free, it would be easier but I am getting frustrated with buying one pouch at a time just because I am worried about it selling out.
