From 52teas

It has been a long busy week. I apologize for the delay in posting our new Tea of the Week. I hope it was worth the wait.

Here’s a premium oolong tea from the Fujian province in China blended with large pieces of freeze-dried Fuji apples and natural and organic flavors. And no, I didn’t mistype: Fujian Oolong and Fuji apples. Serendipitous. I didn’t even realize I had done that until I typed it.

Our Tea of the Week for the week of October 22, 2012

Caramel apples are in the stores right now, tempting me with their goodness. I have resisted so far, but it’s hard. This tea helps. I mean, it’s not going to take the place of a caramel apple :( but it’s a good attempt. It may even help me avoid the evil caramel apple calling me from the store!

Nice apple flavor, caramel, a bit of buttery flavor. Altogether a nice tea.

So when I was looking this up I may have searched “nope” because that is how I felt after my first sip. I get a bit of caramel but mostly this tea is like 97% oolong and I hate oolong. Thank you Roswell Strange for the chance to try this tea but it is not for me.

I missed this tea on the first go-round but I managed to snag a pouch when it was re-blended recently. Frank doesn’t do many oolong-based blends so this one intrigued me. The smell of the tea is very sweet with a mixed fruity-floral undertone. The flavour is also distinctly sweet and smooth though personally I think it tastes more like a sweet cream than caramel to me. The apple flavour is subtle, though I think the oolong based helps it along, still it would be nice if it were a touch stronger.

I should have waited until summer was over to open the packet, but I’m at the point in which I’m anxious for autumn to arrive (I miss you 3/4 of the year, my favorite season). As I soon as I cut the seal: “Faaaaall!” It smells really great! Made me want an actual caramel apple even though I preferred the candied kind. I couldn’t taste any caramel in the liquor, just the apple. This apple flavor quite sour and overpowered the base, a medium-roasted oolong, so it seemed like I was drinking – albeit very thin – hot apple cider. I’ve been drinking so many “pure” teas this past half year that my liking of flavored teas has gone down, but I enjoy this one!

Yep, I wish it were autumn all year. :D

Me too! I love autumn! Counting down the days until I get to go back to Apple Hill (September)!

A bit thin-tasting. Very savoury apple-caramel flavour – closer to the end of the sip/aftertaste. I’m not detecting the full strong flavour of the oolong.

Thanks Kittenna for sharing!

Today was a mostly lazy day. I planted some flowers in the morning and decided to cuddle up with this tea and have a Sons of Anarchy season two marathon. I can say that this tea pairs well with both Ron Perlman and screaming at the television when things don’t go your way.

I infused this tea a few times, my lack of skill/attention with oolong teas led to some mighty tasty cups and some hideous ones. All together I do like this tea though. Read the other reviews. This tea is dang good, all together the perfect addition to my not so busy day.

There is just a faint bit of apple taste to me. I don’t know. I taste it, but it’s not like smaking me over the face with it which is nice, I guess.

Sipdown (189/193)!

Thank you Kittenna for the sample!

I’ve been toying with the idea of a 52Teas order to try some of the Southern Boy iced teas (since I drink a daily cold brew anyway) and because quite a few of the white blends currently stocked pique my interest. I was sort of torn between this one or the Honeybush version as a final thing to round out the order but wasn’t sure whether they’d be worth it: I’d never had one of the 52Teas oolongs before and Frank’s Honeybush base usually tastes really peppery to me. That’s when I remembered I still had an untested sample of this one!

So this was my morning tea before work instead of the usual matcha (because if all goes well I’ll be making my orders tonight when I get home) and man was it delicious! Seriously, it was light apple in a really natural way and sweet, rich caramel in the perfect balance. It was delightful and gentle but still very powerful in the delivery of the flavours.

I kind of feel like that just makes the decision that much harder though: I know both version are reblends and what if the reblend of this one doesn’t live up to this stellar cup? If I get the Honeybush then at least I don’t have a basis for comparison and wont know if it pales in comparison to the original. And conversely; what if I hate the base for the Honeybush? I know I like the Oolong base…

So here’s my question for you Steepster people: Has anyone tried the original Honeybush version? What was it like? And then – has anyone tried either of the reblends? Are they equally flavourful? Not sure which I should go for…

Argh!

Better hot. I love the apple flavor with the touch of caramel. The oolong they use is good but I don’t think it’s anything special.

Tea #17 from Considering a new TTB
I love caramel apples, but this tea didn’t really remind me of them in the slightest. I think it all started off with the oolong base, it has a woody taste that just didn’t seem to fit. It also lacked any sort of apple flavor and instead tasted more like generic melon. This just wasn’t for me, I ended up dumping it out.

I am so glad I was not the only person tasting melons! I wondered if I was crazy.

Short Sorceress

I thought I was going crazy too, but even my taste tester thought it tasted like melons so I felt a little better.

I like this tea well enough. I am not by any means an expert on Oolongs so could not tell you what if anything that I tasted from the base. It seems all to be melded together. But that is preferable most of the time for me and flavored teas, because otherwise it kind of tastes weird to me.

I actually had this tea starting yesterday morning before going to take care of my Grandmother, then finished it when I came home from an outing with a friend.
I tasted plenty of caramel, hints of apple, and strangely enough: the taste of cheese. I have no idea what kind of cheese or why I got the impression of cheese, but it was there. Like a weird cheese like beer infused cheese. Which isn’t a bad thing, I didn’t throw me off.

So, I like this tea, and would be more then happy to receive a bag of this for a gift, but would not go out of my way to buy it.
