Tea #3 from Traveling Tea Box C

I usually start off the day with tea in a travel mug, but since I don’t want to hog any teas I’m not totally into, I have this one in a pretty little teacup. It’s making me want to savor the experience instead of get up and go, so I do need to kick my tail into gear!

That said, this is an interesting blend. It was the first curious-looking black tea I came to this morning, so I decided to give it a try. I tried the low end of the steep times first, then added another minute when it tasted a little weak.

It has a little more staying power now, but both the main flavor profiles seem to be fighting each other instead of working together. Adding a dash of milk did bring a little harmony, but I think the rest of this (there’s about one serving left) will be moving on with the rest of the box when the time comes.

Oh no. Why did I buy this? This has Lapsang Souchong in it! Yuck.

The dry leaf aroma is really weird and not appetizing to my nose. It’s heavily spicy and then the smoke aroma comes in and mixes with the chocolate in a very unappetizing way. Luckily, the brewed tea aroma is significantly improved. It’s mostly chocolate chai now with a hint of smoke. Let’s hope that continues into the flavor.

Oh ugh. This is not my tea. Yuck, and this is not s’mores at all in my opinion. This tastes like black tea with spices and smoky Lapsang. No chocolate, no graham cracker, no marshmallow. Just black tea, spices, and SMOKE! I’m sorry 52teas. I should have read the ingredient list more carefully. I’m going to try and swap this ASAP.

I do enjoy chais. I found this a bit smoky and definitely gettin the chai with a hint of marshmallow sweetness. However, this steep didn’t warrant any chocolate or graham wafer. Maybe I have to let this chill out in the bag for a bit or steep it for longer.
I am going to hold off on rating right now because I might have steeped incorrectly.

Tea #43 from the Here’s Hoping TTB

I’ve probably said in the past, at least half a dozen times, that I really don’t care for 52teas black base. I also don’t particularly care for Lapsang Souchong, or smokey teas in general. This is likely why I couldn’t get into this one even though I love s’mores and chai. While this did remind me of a s’more (if you used cinnamon graham crackers), I thought there was too much smoke. I did love the addition of marshmallow root, I’m a huge fan of it and it is oftentimes overlooked as an ingredient.

This is one of those teas that I would finish drinking, but wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase again. I’m still glad I got to try it, I am bound and determined to find a tea from 52teas that I love, but the search continues.

Marshmallow root is DEFINTELY overlooked!

Ok I have tried so many times and I just can’t make this in any way that is truly drinkable for me. I don’t know how every time I manage to bring the smoke out more and more. Also, in trying to get honey out to sweeten it this time around, I was attacked by my container of corn syrup, so now I really hate this tea.

If anyone wants some, let me know, because I officially give up. I’d be happy to trade it for other things to try and LIKE. hahaha.

Tea #1 from Traveling Tea Box C

After digging out all the tea packed in the box, this one caught my attention (I also noticed the s’mores genmaicha which I plan on trying tomorrow). I set this one to steeping, and then got distracted with explaining the monstrous pile of tea to my roommate, so I have no clue how long this steeped.

I took a sip, and got a generic spicy chai flavor. I went to add some milk aaaaannnnd, we have no milk. I feel like milk probably brings out the s’mores flavor, because I couldn’t taste it. I would try again later with milk, but there are just so many other teas to try!

This one just smells divine in the pouch, almost like eggnog. I love the combination of chai spices with sweetness, and the mallow/cacao here is quite pleasant. Alas, it’s still hot hot hot in Houston, so I use this tea to pretend that I am somewhere more autumnal.

I like this one because it really does have a touch of smokiness to it on top of the sweetness. It’s definitely a clever take on a s’more. Yum. If I ever actually had people over for tea I’d make a big pot of this and serve it with pumpkin cookies. I would love to make this one into a latte, but the tea lattes I make tend to be terrible. Why is that, I wonder? I just make well-steeped extra strong tea with foamed milk and sometimes a shot of vanilla. What’s not to like? They taste better at $tarbuck$, and I’m not sure why.

But I digress, massively.
Brewed this one is a lot simpler than it smells dry. It’s a decent chai, with a hint of smoky- sweetness.

So I received this sample from Amanda, and I will say I can not get s’mores out of this. It tastes like a smokey cinnamon stick. Not too sure I like this, but Im glad I got to try it.

I got this one when it came out but have been letting it sit for a while. I made this using the stovetop method (200ml water, 300ml milk, 2tsp chai, 1.5tsp palm sugar) and it tastes just right. Sweet yet earthy and I can definitely taste the laspsang souchong. The smoky aspect is perfect – not too strong, but just enough to give the tea a lovely ‘campfire’ type taste. The spices are balanced perfectly. I love to see black peppercorns in a chai blend, but they can be really overdone – I’m glad this isn’t the case here.

The tea is very, very finely ground, which usually, would get my goat a little but here (as long as I use T-sacs and not an ordinary strainer because I hate bits in my tea) it means that the brew is bold and well up to taking milk. I had high hopes for this, and I wasn’t let down.
