Tea of the Week for March 20, 2023!

This blend was originally blended during Frank’s era (2011) & then reblended as part of our rewards from our Kickstarter Startup Campaign (2016). Since then, it’s been requested quite a bit, but I’ve held back on reblending it until now.

I “revamped” the recipe, using different teas in the base & omitting the cashews – because all of our teas are allergen-friendly (& omitting the sunflower seeds because they go stale too quickly!) & replacing the “salty” note from those ingredients with Himalayan sea salt flakes (just enough to impart a slight hint of salt without making it too salty). So YUMMY! This blend is vegan, gluten-free, allergen-friendly & all natural!

ingredients: black tea, vegan chocolate chips & Himalayan sea salt flakes

organic ingredients: black teas, cacao nibs, cacao shells & calendula petals

more about this tea: This is my second time reblending this tea, but since I used a dramatically different blend of teas for the base, I decided to call it v.2. For those of you who have been a customer of 52Teas since Frank’s era, you’re likely to remember that this tea originated during his time as the Chief Zoomdweebie of 52Teas. When I reblended it the first time, I changed things up slightly because I used roasted, salted sunflower seeds in the blend in place of the cashew nuts. (We do not use tree nuts in our blends for those who may have nut sensitivities – but I thought sunflower seeds would be fine – since they don’t grow on trees.

And they were – except that they became stale pretty quickly (after a couple of years) & as we have customers out there who like to hang on to their teas for a while (read: hoard! LoL) the staleness became a problem. As a result, I opted not to include sunflower seeds in this blend & because I also still do not use tree nuts in my blends – this does affect the flavor somewhat.

One thing that was missing from the first taste testing is the hint of saltiness that the sunflower seeds added to the cup – so to offer this blend a hint of saltiness, I added some Himalayan sea salt flakes to the blending process. You won’t find a lot of salt flakes in this, because some of them broke down into tiny bits, while others dissolved & became part of the flavoring. The goal wasn’t to make this salty but to impart a hint of salt to the nutty, caramel-y, chocolate-y goodness that is Cashew Turtle! YUM!

To brew: shake the pouch well before you measure to ensure that all the ingredients are incorporated. Use 3g of tea to 12oz of nearly boiling water (205°F). Steep for 3 minutes. Strain & allow to cool for at least 10 minutes. The cool time will allow those flavors to POP!

serving suggestion: I like this one best served hot – but it’s also fantastic iced! I don’t say that about many of the chocolate teas as I tend to prefer my chocolate-y teas hot, but the flavors really come to life as the tea cools. You taste the caramel, the cashews (complete with that hint of salt) and the chocolate even better when it cools. You’ll still get those amazing flavors with a hot cuppa – but the flavors intensify as the cup cools! I like this with a teensy bit of sugar because it is a dessert-y tea & these flavors tend to taste better with just a little bit of sugar.

Yummy chocolate, caramel, and creamy nuttiness. This is one of my favorite teas. I loved the original version that was created several years ago. And, I’m surprised to see that I never reviewed it. I specifically asked for this to be reblended as part of the Kickstarter for the 52Teas Reboot. I’m so glad I did. I can’t easily compare this to the original blend, but I remember really liking the creamy caramel and nutty flavor of the original and that’s what I like most about this reblend as well. The flavors really shine when it has cooled a bit but is still warm. I think this reblend may be a little more chocolaty than the original, but it’s hard to say. The chocolate is definitely there even though this isn’t really a chocolate tea. It’s the creamy caramel and cashew that shine. Cashew is my favorite nutty flavor in tea. I could just drink this all day. Sometimes with almond flavors there is something cloying about the flavor that while I “like” it, I really can’t have more than one cup in a sitting. And caramel teas are so hit or miss for me. This one pulls it off perfectly.

Wam Bam, back to tea! I’ve been away for so long mainly bc life D:

I’m slowly getting tea back into my life and I actually forgot how much I love it!
Anyway, I got this from Sil AGES ago. It did have that old tea taste, but I’m not too picky and it still tasted pretty good with a bit of milk and sugar to help it along!

The chocolate and caramel notes in this tea was lovely. Smooth, not overly bitter like some other chocolate teas that I’ve had before.

I’m not getting much at all from this tea, but I pulled it from a traveling tea box that has had several rounds and it’s in a regular zip plastic baggie, so the odds are stacked against this poor tea! It could be quite old.

I make sure to remove any teas from the HH teabox that I’ve seen before.. certainly if they’ve been in the box for two rounds. Definitely don’t want those well traveled teas in the box! :D

Thanks to Sil for a sample of this.
Like most of the flavored teas I’ve tried, it’s ok, but not nearly as exciting to me as it is to so many other people here.

This is the sort of black tea that I love – one where a 2 minute steep is sufficient. I don’t have a lot of time in the mornings, so teas like this one are perfect for making in a travel mug to bring to work. I made this in the Timolino with rock sugar.

It is so good. This tea has a thick mouthfeel and the aftertaste is pure caramel. I don’t taste chocolate, per se, but the thickness of this tea makes me think I’m biting into a sweet treat.

Delicious. And well worth the wait for this to be reblended.

It always surprises me when I’ve got an idea stuck in my head about a tea, try it anyway, and it surprises me. I grabbed this in the re-blend extravaganza, thinking I’d probably like it enough to drink a bag of it, and then be quite happy passing on by after that.

I was wrong. I may need to order more if there’s still some available. Ack. Of course, it’s gone already. :(

Yes, this is good. Very, very good. The strongest note is caramel, then chocolate, then definitely a salty cashew-type flavor. I eat a lot of cashews, so I’m thinking the flavoring is a bit off from what I’m used to, however it’s still very, very VERY tasty. I may need to try making this as a chai next.

Additional notes: Trying this one again a few weeks later like I said I would (well, according to my tasting notes, it has been two months and a week. Whoops.) Really, this one still has the same flavor as the last cup from the new batch did. I made sure my infuser had a cashew and plenty of chocolate nibs. The scent from the cup does still smell a bit like alcohol, but it might be better now. I’m getting hints of chocolate and cashew in the flavor, but not really any caramel unless that is what that hint of sweetness is. These flavors make the base black tea better than other flavors might. Even with the second steep, with the flavors decreased, the black base is more bearable. I see 52Teas is using all other bases than this one, like keemun, or even just honeybush, oolong, genmaicha… I love ALL of their other bases. Who even sells flavored honeybush?! Honestly, I think I’d avoid buying or even drinking this base in the future. But maybe that’s just my tastes… I see on the site they have four more pouches available for sale, if anyone wants to try it for themselves! I wish I could buy ALL of the other 52Teas right now. Monies though.
