From 52teas

I’ve been dragging my feet a bit this week, hoping I would get in some supplies I’ve been waiting for to create a more Thanksgiving-like blend, but I guess I will just have to save that idea for our special secret Christmas blend (See the “12 Teas of Christmas” post below).

Even though this may not be considered as Thanksgiving-like as what I had planned, I think you’re all going to be blown away by this.

Our premium black teas blended with real popped corn and natural flavors. P.S. This blend IS vegan-friendly!

Our new Tea of the Week for the week of November 22nd, 2010

Okie dokie, well, given my penchant for unusual tea flavors (with the exception of peanut butter flavored teas… sorry, still not going for it), you know I had to order this one.

And … OMG it is so good. I added some agave nectar which make the popcorn taste more like kettle corn but that’s OK because I LOVE KETTLE CORN!

It tastes popcorn-y and buttery and the black tea is robust and a little astringent. I really like this one a lot!

Sipdown! 780.

Well, it took me 11 months to get back to this one, but I have. And again, I got the most deliciously buttery aroma from the brewed up tea (which was unexpected, given the age and storage conditions). I just took a sip of it hot (hotter than I’d like), and I’m finding it difficult to discern anything other than black tea (with a characteristic 52teas older-blend flavour), so I’ll let it cool down a bit before I sip again.

10 minutes later… second sip. I’m still tasting classic 52teas black base and not a great deal more than that. I cleverly avoided astringency with a 2-minute infusion this time, so it’s perfectly enjoyable to drink, but I’m just not getting much in the way of flavouring. If this ever returned as a re-blend and I managed to nab a sample of it, I’d be curious to give it another shot when fresh, instead of well-aged.

I had the last of my first pouch of this tea today (from the 12 days of Christmas sampler). I liked it a little bit more… but not enough to ever want it again. It does taste exactly like pop corn, and I think that this is the reason that I can barely drink it. My brain keeps getting in the way and my tummy is doing summersaults and asking me why I keep drinking this bizarre thing that I keep feeling like should be chewing and added salt to…

So… I actually have a second 12 days of Christmas set from 52teas (long story… But I am very happy to have a second of most of the teas!). And I am more than willing to ship off the unopened sample of this tea to someone who hasn’t tried it yet! I don’t need anything in return, just keep posting reviews, reading makes me smile! : )

If you are interested, post a reply to this tasting note or go ahead and PM me. It will go to the first person to get in touch with me who hasn’t tried it yet.

Tegan Fyretyde

does this sample still exist? I’m curious about this tea.

Ninavampi

Hi Tegan! Sorry I took forever to get back to you! If you are still interested it is still available and I would gladly send it your way!

Tegan Fyretyde

I would love it, and my Husband wants to try it even more than me (he loves those buttered popcorn jelly bellies). I will shoot you a PM

chaijeeyah

Who would want to drink that? Liquid popcorn… Why not actually pop yourself some real corn and pair it with a cup of delicious tea.

I don’t know what it is about this tea, but the flavors really fade over time. It doesn’t taste much like buttered popcorn anymore, and I was really careful to keep it in an air-tight container. :(

I added milk to try to cut the bitterness. That didn’t quite do it, so I added a pinch of sugar. Now it tastes like a buttery sweet tea. The popcorn flavor is kind of there if I really search for it.

It’s still pretty good, but it’s no buttery popcorn and it doesn’t settle my craving for the real stuff. The second steep was surprisingly yummy though. I’m enjoying this, but I’m afraid I have to drop the rating from 100 to 96 because it’s not as perfect as that first experience.

And now on a completely separate note, my Kindle Touch FINALLY came today!!!! EEEEEHH!! Now I just have to resist the urge to buy a million books and figure out whether or not the Amazon Prime membership is worth it…hmmm, decisions decisions.

I have a Kindle fire and I love mine – they used to give away a month’s free membership to Amazon Prime when you bought one…

CHAroma

I can’t figure out whether the Amazon Prime membership is worth it or not. But I’m also still learning what the Kindle can do. So far, I’m loving it!

Cheryl

On the Kindle books page, on the right is a list of the bestsellers. If you click “see all …”, it will take you to the top FREE books. It’s my favorite page on Amazon (well, other than the free music one). But freebies are a good start. You are going to love it.

CHAroma

Thanks, Cheryl! I’ll definitely check that out!

I haven’t had this in ages, but I’m not sure why. This is a interesting tea with a pretty smooth and forgiving base. I seriously forgot about steeping this tea and I think it was bordering on 20 minutes. I was expecting a majorly bitterly tea, but with a bit of milk and sugar I am now drinking a big, warm mug of kettle corn!

Following other people’s suggestions, I tried adding agave nectar to my cup this morning and while I found that it did give the tea an interesting kettle-corn flavour it didn’t do much for the astringency of the tea base. It’s a nice idea but I’m afraid I still don’t care much for this blend.

A lot of our customers seem to have better luck with water that is under boiling and short (2.5-3) minute steep times. That might help with the astringency.

LiberTEAS

Yes, I’ve recently made this discovery… I use 200°F and just 2.5 minutes brew time for 52Teas black teas. After my first tasting of the cranberry black tea from 52Teas, I decided to try lowering the temperature as well as the steep time, and the flavor was divine. The astringency was much less apparent, and no bitterness to the black tea base.

Jillian

Thanks for the advice guys, but unfortunately I just had a little sample pack (left-over from the 12 Days of X-mas sampler) and that was the last of it. I’ll keep that in mind though with other teas. :)

YUMMY…thanks Liberteas!
I have been wanting to try this one for a while and I am so thankful for my Sororitea Sister!!!!

This is reminiscent of Frank’s “toast” tea that I adore. This has a nice sturdy base with a bit of buttery smoothness! I’m really enjoying it! I really like the toasted notes on the popcorn :)

Well, I guess the first day of the 2012 12 Teas of Christmas is as good a day as any to finish up the last of my samples from the 2011 batch! I must admit, I would prefer to drink the cotton candy with the rest of you – this one scares the pants off me. Steeped, this smells BITTER. Aggressively so, like all the tannins in the world have joined together in my cup to attack my taste buds and make me frown. I am coaching myself that it is okay to try it..just take a sip..it’s only tea, it can’t hurt you!

Underneath the bitter malty death smell, I get a hint of something sweet and cinnamon-y, almost like snickerdoodles. Weiiiird. First sips are surprising yet again. I’m not getting any bitterness at all, but I still get the sweetness I was briefly smelling earlier. There is a bit of an oil slick on the top of my cup that’s freaking me out and I can feel the bitterness accumulating as the cup cools and as I continue sipping, but there is no popcorn or butter anywhere to be found.

For this one, I’ll definitely chalk it up to being an old sample and leave off the rating. There’s not really any flavour here to rate anyway, other than (not my fave kind of) black tea. I might toss the last bit of my sample and just call it a day on this one. The 12 Teas were a heck of a ride. While 52Teas are rarely my favourite blends, a few of them were absolutely spectacular and made up for the rest. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll join in again? :)

First of all, let me just say what a totally weird concept this is for me. In Denmark, popcorn are served with salt. The end. No butter, no cheese, no caramel, no chocolate, no spinach, no coffee, no fruit, no curry, no fairy wing dust or whatever else whacky popcorn additions you lot can think up. No nothing. Just salt. Therefore, because it’s so utterly bizarre to me, I admit I’m wary.

I’m glad the pouches are so small here. They are just the right size for the small pot, and that means a small cup for me and a small cup for the boyfriend. So if I strongly dislike it, I don’t have a lot to go through.

Right, be positive, me.

In spite of the fact that I find this fairly bizarre, I do actually think it smells quite nice. It definitely smells like butter, but I’m not sure about the popcorn. I don’t really know how buttered popcorn actually smells, do I, so I don’t know exactly how drowned in grease you get them. But yeah, butter and also something sweet. I’m reminded more of jelly beans than of popcorn actually. (Oh wait a minute… I know there’s a buttered popcorn flavoured jelly bean. I wonder if I’ve ever tasted that one or if I avoided it based on bizarreness…)

Okay, the tea definitely tastes like popcorn. Slightly singed popcorn perhaps, but defintiely popcorn. How… odd. I get butter in the aftertaste too, not really a flavour of butter, but more the way the mouth feels having just eaten something with real butter on it.

This is erm… Well, to be completely honest, it’s exactly as weird and bizarre as I had expected it to be, but not as unpleasant as I had feared. It’s not really something for me, this, but it could also be a lot worse.

Day 1 of the 12 teas of Christmas…

SURPRISE! Wasn’t expecting this! And then I looked up the date it was made and realized it was from November 2010 (but after the 2010 12 Teas of Christmas had already been finalized) I was hoping Frank would do it this way (why yes, I have given this too much thought) because otherwise a lot of teas could be excluded from the final list, if you only include teas from January – October.

Anyway, on to the tea! I’m trying to identify what the tea is before I look at the label, just to see if I can. When I first opened this pouch I could smell…fruity. But it also smelled familiar somehow. I eventually gave up and pulled the label out, and realized I was likely smelling the butter smell from other blends (Pancake breakfast, etc). Don’t know why the fruit essence came to mind, but it didn’t show up in the smell of the steeped tea.

I steeped up about 2 tsp. of this in my Breville (500 ml water) at the below parameters. The smell of the steeped liquor was BUTTER. Like in your face, without a doubt butter. During the sip the butter predominates, and in the aftertaste the popcorn makes itself known. I’m drinking this without additives (although I did try salt and some honey to bring out the flavors to the previous cup, but it hurt rather than helped in the end) and I think the taste is really accurate. It’s definitely a black tea, and the flavoring is in perfect balance with it.

I also have to admit I’m a little surprised at myself – I mean, I like savory teas, but I’ve never really gone for the idea of a savory flavored blend. I just assumed it would be not to my tastes. But it’s really, really good! And I came on to Steepster after it was produced last year so I would have never gotten a chance to taste this if I hadn’t gotten the sampler – so yay for new experiences!

I wanted to try this too! It was in my 12-days of xmas pack, too, but it had split open and spilled all over! I tried contacting Frank about it, but I guess he’s too busy right now. This does sound amazing…

@KeenTeaThyme: I am sure Frank will make it right, he is very good about things like that. :)
