Tea of the Week for April 4, 2022!

What is a Tangerine Twister? The first of my “smoothie” series! (I don’t know how many teas there will be in said series. This may or may not be the first and only tea in this series.) A blend of sweet, creamy green tea (organic Chinese Sencha) blended with vanilla bean, bananas, strawberries & of course, tangerines! The result is a silky smooth cuppa that is tart, tangy & sweet. It tastes amazing hot – but is even better cold-brewed & served iced!

It’s also organic, vegan, gluten-free, allergen-free & all natural!

more about this tea: over the course of what seems to be an endless winter (I’m not complaining – mind you – I love the cold weather!) we’ve had a few warm days. On those warm days, my daughter & I would visit our local smoothie shop.

While waiting for our order, I found myself fascinated by the names of the smoothies. Most of the smoothies started with a base of bananas & usually a berry or two (usually strawberries) & was rounded out by another random fruit – with that random fruit showcased in the name of the smoothie.

I found myself somewhat inspired by this & decided to take a similar approach with my smoothie series. As I mentioned above, I don’t know if there will be more to this series – but I like the idea of maybe making a smoothie tea like this once in a while – something that has banana, some type of berry & another fruit to round things out.

This blend is tasty – the medley of strawberry & banana is exactly that – a medley. You taste notes of both banana & strawberry, but it tastes more like a blend of the two rather than distinctively strawberry and/or distinctively banana. The tangerine offers a note of brightness to the overall cup, again, not tasting super distinctively tangerine, but adding just the right bright note to the drink. A lovely, harmoniously fruity cup!

organic ingredients: green tea, tangerines, bananas, strawberries, vanilla bean & natural flavors

to brew: shake the pouch to redistribute ingredients. Use 3 g of leaf to 12oz of very hot water (175°F) & allow to steep for 2 minutes. Strain & allow to cool for at least 5 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
serving suggestions: I have enjoyed this hot & it’s delicious. I enjoyed it even more as an iced tea (cold-brewed!) No sweetener needed. I did notice that a small drizzle of honey is lovely in this & it tasted more “smoothie-like” with that addition.

AJRimmer Advent Day 22

This one missed the mark for me. I could smell the banana and vanilla while it was steeping, but all I could really taste was the grassy green tea base and a hint of tart citrus. I also found it a bit drying…between that and the tartness, I was ready to move on by the end of the cup.

The flavor here was super subtle the first time I tried it, but stronger the next time. The first time I tasted orange, and the second time I tasted some banana too. The fruit and green tea go together well. It’s pleasant and refreshing cold, though it doesn’t really stand out among the many excellent green teas from 52teas. I had one cup of this mixed with Sun, Cloud, & Mist because I only had a teaspoon left of that one, and they went together really well.

Sipped on this one earlier today and it was nice enough. I felt like the overall body was great and the green tea didn’t bother me, but there wasn’t that “spark” to the cup either. I think mostly it came down to the fact that it was tough to pull out any specific fruity flavour. For the most part, this really just tasted like a sort of generic fruity green. A nice one. Well balanced with the base. Just, based solely on this cup, not something very memorable to me…

Sipdown! (37 | 82)

I was excited for this one, as I love tangerines and citrus in tea, especially green tea.

But to be honest, I had a hard time finding much fruitiness at all in this tea? Mostly I taste the grassy sencha base, with a tiny hint of tartness and banana. I definitely can’t tell that it’s strawberry and tangerine, other than the dried fruit in the leaf.

Oh well, an easy sipdown at least! :)

I don’t think I made it clear (or at least, I don’t think I did) in my last tasting note that I’m combining the scavenger hunts for May & June in June – because I really didn’t have a lot of time to do many tasting notes in May. So, it may seem like I’m writing a lot more tasting notes this time (or – or I INTEND to do so) but it’s really a combination of two months in one.

Anyway, this tea is from this month’s list of scavenger hunt prompts: A tea smoothie. And while this isn’t technically a smoothie – it is the first of my “smoothie series” (with another to come this month!) so I’m going to say it qualifies. This is a blend that combines sweet Chinese Sencha with tangerines, strawberries & bananas, plus a hint of a “tangy creaminess” recipe of essences that I came up with to taste a bit like the yogurt (or Kefir) that I use for smoothies when I make them. (I usually use Kefir.)

I probably say this way more than I should, but this is one of my favorites that I’ve made this spring. It’s so tasty. You get the smoothness from the green tea base – together with my Kefir recipe of essences that provide a really lovely sweet yet tangy background for the flavors of strawberry, banana & tangerine. It’s sweet, fruity, bright and so refreshing.

A nice orange/strawberry blend – it did have that classic smoothie flavour! Enjoyable but not a favourite.
