This was a free sample from my order of samples. Thanks, Teavivre! I will say right away that this is probably the type of tea that is LEAST to my tastes. Water Sprite – I was intrigued by the name of the tea and wasn’t thinking about what the tea might actually taste like when I selected my free samples. It’s the sort of oolong that just tastes like charcoal to my palate and I can’t get past the charcoal to taste anything else. It’s just charcoal, charcoal, charcoal. Sweet, mineral charcoal, but still charcoal. Though I’m sure the quality is great, I’m not the person to ask about roasty oolongs. The leaves look like a dusty black tea. All three steeps were tasting identical. Roasty charcoal. It’s always disappointing that I can’t enjoy these roasty oolongs. Half the second mug spilled — luckily it wasn’t my favorite tea. I won’t cry over this spilled tea… I know others have a much better experience with these types of tea.
Steep #1 // 2 teaspoons for a full mug // 20 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #2 // 13 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #3 // 2 minutes after boiling // 4 min
Harvest: 2018

I hate ashy teas. I’m surprised the roast hasn’t mellowed out after a year.

LuckyMe – maybe the roast HAS mellowed after a year? I’m just trying this one now, so possibly?

LuckyMe

Possibly, I can only imagine how charcoal-y it must have been fresh. Chalk it up to it being an overly roasted tea

Terri

This has been my morning “go to” for about a year now… I brew western style, no rinse (don’t judge me-hahaha)3-4 oz per 12 oz 190f for 3 min. I usually will cool my first cup with an ice cube, so I drink it on my way to work. I do find it “roasty” but I’ve never had it be to ashy like that. I am disappointed for you, this is really a nice tea… sad face :(

tea-sipper

It’s just this type of tea to my palate, I guess. I can’t love them all!

Terri

I totally agree! We all have different tastes and likes ;)

Hi! I love tea and trying new ones – it adds a bit of variety to my day! Books, music, TV & movies are my thing… and tea, of course.

My icon photo is Richard Mayhew from the graphic novel ‘Neverwhere’ by Neil Gaiman, Mike Carey & Glenn Fabry.

Most of the teas listed in my cupboard are actually sample sizes. I don’t really have 2,000 ounces of tea around here! Many of my teas have only one teaspoon left… maybe two. But I like keeping them in my cupboard list for reference to what I could be sipping. Usually, I write tasting notes once for each tea. I’m still drinking them, just not writing tasting notes each time!

I’m always in search of: Hattialli, Qu Hao black, Jin Jun Mei, teas using marshmallow root.

My dislikes: hibiscus, ginger (unless in chai), turmeric, bee pollen, charcoal type flavors

My ratings:
95-100 – Super awesome deliciousness favorites – cupboard essential
80-95 – Also pretty delicious
65-80 – Pretty good
50-65 – Okay
1-50 – Probably won’t want to sip it again

I’m planning on being a Steepsterer as long as there IS a Steepster, so if you’re not hearing from me, that means something happened to my health… if you know what I mean. (Or as evidenced by the great computer hiatus of 2019, something happened to my computer… I have a dumb phone so can’t access internet on that. As of 12/20/21 my wifi might start getting unreliable.)

Happy sipping!
